The room was dark.
I leaned in close, my breath warm against his ear.
"I have a surprise for you. Like it?"
He didn't answer—but his breath hitched.
I smiled, thinking I'd nailed it.
I wrapped my arms around his neck and kissed him, deep and slow, heart pounding in anticipation.
Then I heard it.
Jason's voice.
Coming from outside the door.
"Why are all the lights on? Is nobody home?"
I froze.
Blood rushed to my head.
If Jason was outside...
Then who the hell was I kissing right now?
I scrambled off him in panic, arms crossed over the lace lingerie I had picked out just for Jason.
"Who are you?" I whispered, trying not to hyperventilate.
A calm, low voice replied,
"Ethan."
I blinked.
Ethan Pierce.
Jason's roommate.
I'd seen him a few times—tall, quiet, aloof. He never said much. Barely even nodded in acknowledgment. Always seemed like the kind of man who hated small talk... and people in general.
And I had just been on top of him.
My face burned. "Why are you in Jason's room?"
"Needed to borrow a charger," he said, completely unfazed.
But I was very fazed.
I was practically naked.
Alone with Ethan in the dark.
And Jason was about to walk in.
If he saw us like this, I could swear my whole life would be over.
In a panic, I grabbed my clothes and my phone, shoved them against my chest, and ducked into the wardrobe.
"Please," I whispered. "Don't let him find me."
Ethan was silent for two seconds. Then he walked over and calmly shut the wardrobe door.
The room filled with light as the front door opened.
Jason stepped in.
"Hey, Ethan? What are you doing in my room?"
"Borrowing your charger."
Jason didn't seem to think much of it. "Oh. By the way—did you see Vanessa? She said she'd be here already."
Ethan didn't even flinch. "Didn't see her."
Inside the wardrobe, I was sweating bullets.
Tonight was supposed to be special.
Our one-year anniversary.
I'd told Jason I had a "surprise" for him tonight. He was working late, so I came over early to set the mood.
I thought I'd greet him wearing nothing but lace and a smile.
Instead... I pounced on his roommate in the dark.
Jason asked Ethan to help him with his laptop in the other room.
The moment they left, I bolted out, changed back into my clothes, and slipped away like a thief.
