Florida executes Wuornos

Wednesday, October 9, 2002 Posted: 10:08 AM EDT (1438 GMT)

STARKE, Florida (CNN) -- Serial killer Aileen Wuornos was executed Wednesday by lethal injection at the Florida State Prison, more than 10 years after she murdered six men along Florida highways while working as a prostitute.

Florida officials said the execution took place at 8:47 a.m. ET.

Wuornos, called "The Highway Hooker" and "The Damsel of Death," admitted she killed six middle-aged men in 1989 and 1990, luring some of them by posing as a stranded motorist on north central Florida highways.

One of the nation's few female serial killers, Wuornos had fired her attorneys and dropped her appeals despite lingering questions over her sanity.

Her case was the subject of books, movies and even an opera. In time, she apologized to her victims' families. But last year after a decade on death row - Wuornos volunteered for the death penalty, saying she'd kill again.

"There is no point in sparing me," she said in July 2001. "It's a waste of taxpayers' money."

Police said Wuornos, 46, was a prostitute who worked the Florida highways. Sgt. Bob Kelley of the Volusia County Sheriff's Department - who investigated Wuornos' first victim, Richard Mallory - said Wuornos shot her victims to death, robbed them, and then dumped their bodies.

At first, she claimed she acted in self-defense.

"After she was convicted of the first murder of Richard Mallory, she then pled guilty to the others, and after a certain point in time she started to recant, and say she wasn't a victim," Kelley said. "She simply robbed and killed those men to gain their personal property and to gain money."

When she asked to be put to death, Wuornos said the same thing.

"I killed those men, robbed them as cold as ice. And I'd do it again, too," she said. "There's no chance in keeping me alive or anything, because I'd kill again. I have hate crawling through my system."

Wuornos stood trial only for the killing of Mallory; she pleaded no contest to five other killings. And police believe she was responsible for the death of a seventh man, but his body was never found and Wuornos was not charged in his death.

LETTERS TO THE EDITORS

THE U.S. RAGE

To the Editor:

Having been a reader of the Los Angeles Free Press for a number of years, I feel I must comment on the current state of affairs in the United States.

I have observed a growing trend toward violence and disrespect for the law, particularly among the younger generation. This is exemplified by the recent riots and demonstrations that have taken place in cities across the country.

I believe that this trend is due, in part, to a lack of discipline and moral guidance in the home and in the schools. I also believe that the media has played a role in glamorizing violence and rebellion.

It is time for Americans to take a long, hard look at themselves and at their society. We must find a way to restore respect for the law and for each other. Otherwise, we are doomed to repeat the mistakes of the past.

Sincerely, John Smith Los Angeles, California

To the Editor:

I am writing to express my outrage at the recent police brutality incidents that have been reported in the news. It is clear that there is a systemic problem of racism and violence within law enforcement agencies.

I believe that it is time for a complete overhaul of the police system in this country. We need to demilitarize the police, end qualified immunity, and hold officers accountable for their actions.

We also need to invest in community-based solutions to crime, such as mental health services, job training programs, and affordable housing.

The time for change is now. We cannot afford to wait any longer.

Sincerely, Jane Doe New York, New York

To the Editor:

I am writing to express my support for the Black Lives Matter movement. I believe that this movement is essential for achieving racial justice in the United States.

Black people have been subjected to systemic racism and oppression for centuries. It is time for white people to acknowledge their privilege and to stand in solidarity with Black people in the fight for equality.

I urge everyone to educate themselves about the history of racism in this country and to take action to dismantle it. We must all do our part to create a more just and equitable society.

Sincerely, Robert Jones Chicago, Illinois

SHAD AGNEW

To the Editor:

I am writing to express my disappointment with the Los Angeles Free Press for publishing an article that was critical of Vice President Spiro Agnew.

I believe that Agnew is a strong and effective leader who is working hard to protect American values. He is a target of the liberal media because he is not afraid to speak his mind.

I urge the Free Press to reconsider its position on Agnew and to give him the respect that he deserves.

Sincerely, Mary Brown Houston, Texas

MUSIC REVIEW

THE ROLLING STONES "LET IT BLEED"

The Rolling Stones' new album, "Let It Bleed," is a masterpiece. It is a dark, gritty, and bluesy album that captures the spirit of the times.

The album opens with the title track, a raw and powerful rocker that sets the tone for the rest of the album. Other highlights include "Gimme Shelter," a chilling song about the Vietnam War, and "You Can't Always Get What You Want," a poignant ballad about the human condition.

"Let It Bleed" is a must-have for any fan of rock and roll. It is one of the best albums of the year, and it will stand the test of time.

AFRICAN ANTELOPE

To the Editor:

Thank you for the article, "African Antelope." I found it very interesting. I would like to know if you have any back issues of the Free Press with articles on the same subject. If so, please let me know.

Sincerely, R. H. San Francisco, Calif.

(Ed. Note: We do not have any back issues with articles on the same subject.)

COLUM

To the Editor:

I am writing in response to your article on the Colum commune. I was a member of the commune for several months, and I have a different perspective on the experience than the one presented in your article.

I found the commune to be a very positive and supportive environment. The members were all committed to living a simple and sustainable lifestyle. We worked hard, but we also had a lot of fun.

I believe that the Colum commune is a model for a better way of living. I am grateful for my time there, and I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for an alternative way of life.

Sincerely, David Wilson Portland, Oregon
