Chapter 40 - Chapter 40

Joshua saw Katherine hesitate to speak, so he directly said, "Katherine, we studied together for many years. Aren't we still friends?"

Katherine heard this and bit her lower lip lightly. The faint teeth marks seemed to show her inner struggle.

Then she forced a shy smile, but her eyes showed a hint of sadness and helplessness. She slowly said, "I was suspended from the hospital."

Joshua was slightly surprised. A scene flashed in his mind—her lost and distracted look by the river that day. "Is that the day I met you by the river?"

Katherine nodded quietly and softly replied, "Yes."

"What happened? How serious was it that you got suspended?"

Joshua frowned slightly, his eyes full of concern and confusion.

Katherine sighed inside. She definitely could not mention the divorce with Andrew. She only vaguely said, "I made a mistake."

"That day at work, I stepped out for an hour. When I came back, someone told me my patient had a severe lung hemorrhage."

"But before I left, I checked on him. He was stable then."

Joshua looked closely at Katherine's face for a moment. He raised his eyebrows and asked carefully, "Were you framed?"

"Yes, I am sure about that." Katherine raised her head slightly, her eyes full of determination.

"I already have two pieces of evidence, but it may not be enough to make her confess."

Joshua stared at her deeply, as if he could see through her tired but persistent heart. "So you plan to collect more evidence?"

"Maybe. I'm just trying my luck," Katherine said with a hint of helplessness and self-mockery.

Joshua did not say more. He quietly took off his jacket and naturally put it on Katherine's shoulders, as if he had done it many times before.

He looked at her with a teasing but caring expression. "Where are you going to try your luck? A bar?"

"She likes to dance and drink after work, so I want to see if I can catch her there," Katherine explained softly.

Joshua looked at the time. It was almost 4:30. His tone became firm and decisive:

"She is your colleague? It's already past four, we should go now."

Katherine looked up at him, surprised, with a flicker of uncertainty in her eyes. "Senior brother, are you coming with me?"

"Do you want to go alone to a place like that?"

"Of course you need a bodyguard. Let's go. My car is on the upper floor."

Joshua said as he turned and walked ahead. His back looked steady and reliable.

Katherine watched him walk away and felt a warm feeling rise in her heart.

With him by her side, she would feel more confident in that chaotic place.

After all, bars have all kinds of people and unexpected situations can happen.

She quickly grabbed a bag with high heels from the car, locked it, and hurried to catch up.

They reached the parking lot upstairs. Katherine's eyes followed Joshua until he stopped by a car.

She was surprised. "Senior brother, are we taking this car?"

As they spoke, a trace of hesitation and concern slipped out without them realizing it. "Could this be too exaggerated?"

The car, under the parking lot lights, gave off a low-key yet luxurious aura.

Katherine knew in her heart that this car was worth millions. Driving it to a bar like that seemed out of place and would definitely attract attention.

Joshua seemed to see through her thoughts. A faint smile lifted the corner of his mouth as he explained:

"I bought it used, didn't spend much.

Besides, many people at places like that just go to see and pick."

"Get in the car, no time to waste."

Saying that, Joshua walked around to the other side of the car and very politely opened the passenger door for Katherine. His movements were smooth and elegant, showing his thoughtfulness and style.

Katherine saw Joshua was so confident. Though she still had some doubts, she knew there was no time to hesitate.

She slightly bent forward and got into the passenger seat. Joshua gently closed the door, then quickly went around to the driver's side and got in.

The car started. Joshua skillfully controlled the steering wheel and turned his head to ask, "Going to the hospital now?"

"Yes, I want to wait for her to finish work."

Joshua turned his head slightly and saw her serious expression. A smile naturally appeared on his lips. "Alright, but Katherine, don't worry too much. The truth will always come out."

"Just like clouds can never block the sun forever, darkness is only temporary, and light will come."

His words seemed to have a magical power that gently cleared some of the gloom from Katherine's heart.

She tilted her head a little and looked at Joshua's face. The gratitude and trust in her eyes were clear. "Thank you, Senior Brother. Looks like you are sent by heaven to help me."

Hearing this, warmth rose in Joshua's heart. He teased her in return:

"I'm happy to serve such a beautiful and kind lady. Being your support is my honor."

His voice was low and magnetic, carrying a subtle gentleness.

During their talk, the shadows in Katherine's heart slowly faded. She began to relax, no longer as tense as before.

They drove on and soon arrived at the underground parking lot of Xiehe Hospital.

Katherine had worked with Shanshan for many years and knew her habits well. She knew Shanshan's car was usually parked in a fixed spot.

Sure enough, not long after, they accurately found Shanshan's car.

Joshua's eyes quickly scanned the surroundings. His gaze was sharp and decisive. Then he lightly pressed the gas pedal and slowly parked the car opposite Shanshan's.

This spot allowed them to clearly observe Shanshan's every move while making it hard for her to notice them.

They quietly sat inside the car, waiting for the main person to appear.

At 5:40, the person they waited for finally came into view.

"Senior Brother, she's here."
