Elijah wasn't trying to eavesdrop. He didn't even like drama. But when the hallway near the back stairwell echoed with Brielle's voice, low and sharp; he paused.
"…I said no pills. Just what I asked for," she snapped.
A guy's voice responded, smooth and cocky. "Relax, princess. You're already on thin ice. Keep playing boss and it'll cost extra."
Elijah stepped closer, staying hidden behind the corner. His heart thudded. Was she… buying drugs?
Brielle hissed, "Don't call me that. And keep your mouth shut. I'm not the only one with secrets, Marcus."
Marcus laughed. "Sure thing. But next time, come alone. You don't want your new tutor catching you slumming it."
Elijah's blood went cold.

Before he could move, Brielle brushed past the corner, freezing the second she saw him.

"Were you spying on me?" she asked, her voice low and dangerous.
"I... no," Elijah said, straightening. "I was just… walking."
She tilted her head, smirking like a storm brewing. "Careful, Carter. Some places in this school bite."
