Chapter 16 - Chapter 16 – “Damage Control”

The morning after the scandal broke, Marvel Industries headquarters hummed with a rare urgency. It was as if the entire building held its breath, waiting to see if Tian Li Feng could salvage not just his reputation but the future of the company itself.

Tian stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows of his office, the city skyline stretching out beyond him like a silent audience. His face, usually so guarded, now wore the traces of sleepless nights and relentless pressure. But beneath the fatigue, there was a spark—something steely and resolute.

Vivian Park was already on the phone when Tian entered the war room, a large conference room that had been hastily converted into a crisis command center. Screens flickered with social media feeds, news updates, and internal memos. The PR team sat clustered around the table, eyes flicking anxiously between each other and their phones.

"Morning," Tian said, his voice low but steady. Vivian glanced up, surprise flickering in her eyes before she masked it with professional neutrality.

"Mr. Li," she said curtly. "You're early."

"I'm not here to play the reluctant heir today," Tian replied. "We need to control the narrative before this scandal consumes us."

Vivian's team exchanged looks. Tian had never worked closely with the PR department before; their world was one of polished spin and careful wording—something Tian often dismissed as superficial. But now, with his future on the line, he understood that the game had changed.

"Alright," Vivian said, "let's hear your plan."

Tian unfolded his strategy with surprising clarity. "First, we own the story. I'll hold a press conference—no evasion, no deflection. I'll acknowledge my mistakes, but I'll make it clear my commitment to Marvel's future is stronger than ever. We turn this from a scandal into a narrative of growth and redemption."

The room buzzed with cautious optimism. Vivian nodded slowly. "It's risky. But the alternative is silence, which will let the rumors fester."

Over the next several hours, Tian and the PR team crafted his statement, rehearsed answers, and prepared for the inevitable barrage of questions. Vivian was a demanding taskmaster, pushing Tian to tighten his messaging and shed his usual cavalier tone.

At midday, the press conference was held in the gleaming atrium of Marvel Industries. Reporters packed the room, cameras flashing as Tian stepped up to the podium.

He looked out at the crowd, steadying himself.

"I won't deny my past," Tian began, voice clear and confident. "Yes, I made mistakes during my younger years in Monaco. I lived a life that was reckless, and at times, irresponsible. But those days are behind me."

Murmurs rippled through the room. Tian continued, "What matters now is my vision for Marvel Industries—a vision rooted in innovation, integrity, and leadership. I'm committed to guiding this company through its next chapter."

Questions came fast—about the leaked photos, about his readiness to lead, about his relationship with the board and his father. Tian faced each with a mixture of honesty and defiance, refusing to be cowed by the media's probing.

The conference ended with a flash of cameras and the murmurs of speculation. But outside the building, the story was already shifting. Headlines emphasized Tian's "bold admission" and "determined leadership." The narrative was, slowly, changing.

Yet behind the public show of strength, the battle was only beginning.

That afternoon, Tian convened a private meeting with Jin Mei Xue. The analyst had been silent during the press frenzy, but Tian knew she was working just as hard behind the scenes.

"We need to find out who leaked the Monaco material," Tian said, pushing a file across the table. "I suspect it's not just the usual tabloids. Someone on the board—or worse, foreign interests—want to see me fail."

Jin Mei nodded, already scanning the data she'd gathered. "I've been tracking suspicious transactions in Marvel's accounts. There are payments linked to an offshore group called the 'Black Lotus Consortium.' They're covert, highly skilled at sabotage and espionage."

Tian frowned. "How deep are they?"

"Deep enough to have allies within the company," Jin Mei replied grimly. "They're financing leaks, manipulating media narratives, and possibly coordinating hostile takeovers."

Tian rubbed his temples. The company he'd thought he knew was crumbling beneath him, unraveling into a web of corruption and betrayal.

Meanwhile, whispers among the board members grew louder. Some openly questioned Tian's leadership, expressing doubts in hushed tones over lunch or in passing. "He's too reckless." "This scandal proves he's not ready." "Li Feng needs a stable successor—not a wild card."

Even his closest allies were on edge, unsure whether Tian's bold gambits would pay off or destroy everything.

That night, as Tian reviewed the company's financial statements, his phone buzzed. A message appeared from an unknown number:

"Back down now. Or the fallout will be worse than you think."

The text was terse, chilling. Tian stared at the screen, heart pounding. This was no idle threat—it was a warning shot fired across his bow.

He showed the message to Jin Mei, who frowned deeply. "They're serious," she said. "They want to scare you off. But we need to stay sharp. This is just the beginning."

Tian clenched his fists. He wouldn't be intimidated. Not now, not ever.

Outside, the city lights flickered against the night sky—a reminder that power was always shadowed by danger. The fight for Marvel's future had become a battle for survival. And Tian was ready to play his hand.
