Chapter 3 - Chapter 3|The Smile Beneath the Mask

The Royal Academy of Magic looked just as I remembered it.

Grand towers of white stone, stained glass windows glowing with enchantments, and a thousand banners fluttering in the wind—each one embroidered with the sigils of noble houses.

I walked through the main gate, head high, cloak fluttering behind me. My steps were steady, my gaze cold.

And waiting just beyond the marble steps was her.

"Elira!"

Reina Avelar.

Still beautiful. Still perfect.Light brown curls pinned neatly. Sky-blue eyes shining with warmth. She rushed forward with a bright smile, arms open.

"It's been too long! I missed you!"

I let her embrace me.

Just like I did in the past.

She smelled like lilies—sweet and clean. Just like the lies on her tongue.

"I missed you too," I said softly.

It was a lie, but I had grown skilled at telling them.

She pulled back, holding my hands.

"I heard you're rooming in the East Wing with Elyse Clovre. She's lovely—though not exactly... refined."

There it was. The first dig, wrapped in lace.

"I'm sure I'll get along with her just fine."

"Of course," she said quickly. "You always were good at... adapting."

Another needle, slipped between words and smiles.

I studied her. Not a wrinkle in her gown. Not a hair out of place.Still playing the role of sweet confidante.

Still hiding the dagger.

In my last life, I never questioned her loyalty. This time, I'll question everything.

We walked side by side through the courtyard, the bells of the academy ringing above us.

"I saved you a seat in orientation," Reina said cheerfully. "You'll be beside me, of course."

Of course.

She wanted me close.Where she could watch me. Control me.Like before.

"How thoughtful," I said with a smile.

"Well, we are best friends," she said. "Aren't we?"

I stopped walking.

She turned, blinking. "Elira?"

I tilted my head, smiled again—but this time, I let a sliver of frost seep through my voice.

"Best friends, Reina? We'll see."

Her smile faltered. Only for a second.

But I saw it.

And it was enough.
