Chapter 7 - I feel so much better

"What are you doing? Let go. Let go of me." The girls struggled but the guards did not need a lot of strength to handle a few bullies.

"Do you know who I am?" The red-haired girl, the girl who had pulled Lilah's hair and was jealous of her pretty face, barked. "How dare you do this to me over a blind girl?"

Patrick frowned and then the guard pressed her face to the ground.

"This blind girl is my sister." He said and stepped on her face. "And anyone who dares to mess with my sister is messing with me?"

"How is she your sister?" One of the other girls asked. "Isn't Dawn your only sister? You said so yourself the last time we saw you."

Patrick was well known as a mad dog who was beyond loyal to his sister, Dawn. So, everyone made sure not to get on Dawn's bad side. If not, she would tell her brother, and he would get revenge for her, even for the smallest thing.

He said it so many times that the only sister he had was Dawn but what was this? How come he was holding another woman and calling her his sister? Someone blind too.

"Whatever I said in the past is no longer relevant." He yelled and swung his hand. "Pass this on to anyone you see. I have another sister. And even though she's blind, she is the best in the world. If anyone tries to lay a hand on her, I will not let them go."

Lilah's heart continued to thump. It was as if she was still in a dream, living the life her sister used to live and being protected by their family.

'They're putting so much into their act.' Lilah thought. 'Haven't they done enough?'

"Lilah, you step on them too." Patrick said and Lilah did not refuse that offer.

She was a kind child but she would not hesitate to pay back what she had received.

Slowly, she moved her legs and tapped her cane to get the faces of the girl who had stepped on her.

"Hey, don't use that filthy thing to touch me." The red-haired girl flared, and Lilah nodded.

"Since I can't see your face, I can't tell if you're pretty or ugly." Lilah said. "But what does it matter? I'm blind anyway so it won't make a difference." With that, she stepped on the girl's face. "I don't appreciate people stepping on my face."

The girl gritted her teeth. She had acted so calm and harmless only a moment ago and now she was running her mouth.

It was probably because her brother was here to protect her. Having such a capable brother...

'Dammit! If I knew she was related to that madman, I wouldn't have messed with her.' She thought.

Lilah felt so much better after stepping on that girl's face and pulling her hair. She never thought a day would come when she would be able to retaliate to a bully and not worry about the repercussions.

"Do you feel better?" Patrick asked and she nodded.

"Yes, brother. I feel so much better." She smiled and he smiled back.

He scratched his nose, feeling proud that he had done something right and nice for Lilah.

"Oh, by the way. I heard you were in an accident. Are you hurt anywhere?" He asked but Lilah shook her head.

"No, brother. I'm fine. Brother Harry protected me from the shards." She said.

"That's good." He said. "It would be a problem if your pretty face got scarred."

Lilah's body froze up a bit as she heard him say that. Her pretty face? It would be a problem if she was scarred? Was it because the vampires wanted the prettier twin? And she happened to be the prettier one?

The vampires are said to admire beauty a lot and would reward anyone generously for offering a pretty face.

"And those evil girls. How dare they step on your face? Don't they know your face is priceless?" He raged. "Maybe I should've peeled the skin off their faces."

His words only confirmed her suspicion. For him to be so angry about them almost ruining her face made her think he was angry that they nearly ruined their plans to sell her off to the vampires.

"Ah, there's no need to go that far." Lilah said. "I'm just happy you stood up for me and helped me get back at them." Her smile began to fade and she bowed her head, feeling her heart grow heavy.

Just as she thought... Having hope that her situation would get better than it used to be when growing up would only come to bite her heart.

Only this little was making her feel despair and have a heavy heart.

'I know it.' she clutched her skirt. 'I know that they only need me to take the dall for Dawn. But still...' her shoulders trembled and she bit her lip as she tried hard to hold her tears. '... I can't help these feelings that keep crawling into my heart. The warmth, the kindness, all of it is killing me. Why are they doing this to me?'

"Lilah, are you okay?" Patrick asked and Lilah nodded, raising her head to smile at him.

"Brother Patrick, let's go pick up Dawn." She said. "We can't have her wait for too long. She'll get sad."

"Ah, right. I nearly forgot." He said and Lilah's dull eyes slowly fell to the glow she was seeing in his heart. It was bright.

'They're such good actors.' She thought.
