Chapter 4 - To Fight is to Survive

At that moment, Zhao Feng suddenly realized something.

His previously focused expression slowly darkened, as if a shadow had suddenly covered his heart.

"Mom…"

His thoughts immediately went to the one person who meant the world to him—his mother.

Amid the chaos that had just erupted… while the school had turned into a slaughterhouse filled with monsters…

Zhao Feng remembered—his mother worked in the downtown office district. A tall glass building packed with people and endless noise—a place he never imagined could become dangerous.

His heart pounded hard.

What if a portal appeared there too? What if monsters broke in and started attacking without warning—just like here?

"Mom… are you safe?" he whispered, barely audible, more to himself than anyone else.

Without wasting a second, he reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone.

The screen was cracked at the edges, damp with sweat, but still functional.

His fingers trembled slightly as he tapped a contact he knew by heart: "Mom."

The ringtone echoed.

Once… twice… thrice…

No answer.

Zhao Feng's breath quickened. He was about to hang up and try again when suddenly—

Click. The call connected.

A familiar voice, soft but panicked, came from the other end:

"Feng!? Feng, is that you!? Are you okay!? Are there monsters there too!? Are you hurt?!"

Her voice trembled with fear—the desperate cry of a mother in a world that had just turned into hell.

Zhao Feng felt some of the weight lift from his chest. He took a deep breath and replied calmly but firmly:

"I'm fine, Mom. Don't worry… I'm safe. But what about you? Is there a portal near your office?"

There was a long breath from the other end. Her voice was calm, though tension still lingered in every word.

"Yes… one appeared on the twelfth floor. Some creatures broke through and attacked. But don't worry about me, Feng."

A brief pause before she continued—her tone now firmer, more resolute.

"Listen carefully. I know you're worried, but… I've awakened a superpower. And Miss Leng has awakened an ice-type ability. Together with the armed guards, we will hold them back."

Zhao Feng nodded slowly, even though she couldn't see it. The pressure in his chest eased just a little.

"I see… that's a relief."

"Now I have to help the others. Be careful, Feng. Don't act rashly… wait for backup. I'll call you again soon."

Click.

The call ended.

Zhao Feng slowly lowered his phone and closed his eyes for a moment. He took another deep breath.

His mother was safe. For now, that was all he needed to hear.

But the world was still falling apart. And he knew—sooner or later, he had to face it.

As Zhao Feng ended the call, the other students seemed to snap out of their shock.

The atmosphere in the classroom shifted. No longer just silent sobs and stillness—now panicked whispers as students hurriedly called their own families.

Xiao Yuyan, standing frozen, quickly pulled out her phone and dialed.

In one corner, some students sighed in relief when they heard the voices of their loved ones—tears of happiness and shaky smiles mixed across their faces.

But not everyone was so lucky.

A boy sat at the back, staring blankly at his phone. It kept ringing—no answer. His face turned pale. He called again, his hands trembling with desperation.

"Please… pick up… please…" he murmured, like a prayer. But silence was all he received.

Sobs echoed from a corner of the room. A girl sat hugging her knees, her shoulders shaking uncontrollably. Another student kicked a chair, eyes red with anger and fear.

The classroom became a storm of uncontrollable emotions.

Yet—Zhao Feng remained calm.

He observed everything—just briefly. Not because he didn't care, but because his focus was now fixed on two panels floating before him.

His eyes narrowed, full of cold analysis.

In this new world full of chaos and death… information was power.

He turned to the first panel—one that showed the so-called "Great World" system.

[ Name: Zhao Feng ][ Code: 2025 ][ Superpower: Storm Bow ][ Level: 1 – Intermediate ][ Skills: • Liuyedao Stormblade (Lv.1) • Lightning Phantom (Lv.1) ]

"Useful data," he muttered.

Then he glanced at the second panel—something no other student seemed to have. It had a clean white background and a rigid game-like interface.

[ Evolution Points: 0 ][ System Mall & Skill Upgrades ]

Zhao Feng squinted. A System Mall? Just like in a game. He might be able to buy items, skills, or level up. But for now, everything was locked.

"Maybe I need to kill monsters to earn points…" he thought.

His hand clenched. He knew—being passive would only lead to weakness and death.

Without hesitation, Zhao Feng moved toward the window, which had been covered by thick fabric before. He pulled it aside, letting cold air rush in—carrying a faint scent of blood.

Through the gap, he looked down at the shattered school yard.

In the middle, a large blue portal pulsed—its light flickering like a gateway to hell itself.

And right in front of it… lay a giant beast.

A wolf—but far larger than a normal wolf. Its fur was dark and sharp like steel needles. Its claws dug into the ground, chest rising and falling with heavy breaths.

Even from here, Zhao Feng could feel its oppressive aura.

"That's… the boss," he whispered.

It was still asleep. That was the only good news.

Zhao Feng moved to the other side of the classroom and climbed onto the windowsill.

He was about to leave.

Xiao Yuyan noticed.

Without hesitation, she followed him.

"Zhao Feng! Where are you going?!"

"Inside or outside, this place won't be safe for long. I'm leaving."

Panic spread among the students as they watched the two head toward the window.

"No! It's dangerous!" someone shouted.

"Yuyan, don't follow him! Stay here!" others tried to stop her.

But Xiao Yuyan didn't even glance back.

Her eyes locked on Zhao Feng's back.

She knew the danger well—but there was a fire inside her. A pride she wouldn't ignore.

She knew she had to fight the monsters eventually—so better to adapt early.

With blazing determination, she jumped down, following Zhao Feng out of the classroom.

As their feet hit the corridor, they froze.

The hallway—which had once been just another part of the school—had become a slaughter zone.

The walls were badly damaged, covered with deep scratch marks, gouged down to the concrete.

Dried blood darkened the floor. Red stains dripped from the ceiling like hellish art.

Scattered remains were everywhere.

Severed hands. Broken bones. Even scalps hung from doorknobs.

The smell—of blood and rotting flesh—was overpowering.

Their footsteps echoed in the silence, only interrupted by constant drops of blood falling from above.

Xiao Yuyan covered her mouth, tears welling up in her eyes. She nearly vomited.

But she kept moving—shaking, but never stopping. She forced her eyes open, forcing herself to see it all.

She pushed beyond her own limits.

Zhao Feng glanced at her.

He saw her following. Saw her holding back tears. And for the first time—he felt a flicker of admiration.

Honestly, it was brutal. And the fact that Xiao Yuyan was adapting so fast deserved recognition.

Strangely, Zhao Feng felt no emotion from the carnage—only a calm, calculating awareness.

He wondered if this was a positive side effect of the time reversal.

But his sharp eyes remained alert, scanning every corner of the hall.

Then he heard it—

Grrrhhh…

A low, rough growl echoed from the dark end of the corridor.

They both turned.

From the shadows… a pair of glowing red eyes—like embers from hell itself.

A black wolf stepped out, its large body covered in bristling fur. Its eyes shone red, drool dripping from razor-sharp fangs.

Its claws scraped the floor with every step.

Zhao Feng and Xiao Yuyan clenched their fists.

Their eyes lit with focus.

They were ready.
