Chapter 20 - A Rage Fueled by Affection

Emerging from a hidden underwater passage that opened onto a secluded, rocky cove, Lucian and Finley gasped for breath, the air feeling thick and heavy after the crushing pressure of the deep. Lorelai surfaced behind them, her usually radiant face etched with worry.

"You must go," she urged, gesturing inland with her spear. "Get as far from the Obsidian Tides as you can. That entity… it will be drawn to the power of the Tears."

Finley, his chest heaving, looked back at the dark, churning water. "But… what about you, Lorelai? Where will you go?"

Lorelai's gaze was fixed on the unseen depths. "I must return. The Queen… she needs my aid. That darkness… it feeds on her sorrow, on the very magic that protects this realm. With the Tear of the Azure gone, the magical barriers that shield the Obsidian Tides will weaken."

Her voice was filled with urgency. "That weakening will draw more than just shadows. Mystical predators, creatures of immense power that dwell in the deepest trenches, will sense the vulnerability. And with the Elixir gone, the Queen's own strength will wane as she fights to contain the encroaching darkness."

She gave Lucian a grave look. "Guard the Tear well, surface dweller. Its power is immense, and now, it is the only hope for your cure… and perhaps for the survival of the Obsidian Tides. We will meet again, I hope, when this darkness is vanquished."

With a final, resolute nod, Lorelai turned and plunged back into the dark waters, disappearing beneath the waves to return to the aid of her Queen. Lucian and Finley were left alone on the shore, the weight of the Tears of the Azure heavy in Lucian's hand, the gravity of their situation sinking in. They were fugitives, carrying a powerful artifact, with a dark entity and its minions surely on their trail, and the fate of an entire underwater kingdom hanging in the balance. The Isle of Whispers, their original destination for a permanent cure, now seemed even further away, overshadowed by this immediate and terrifying threat.Finley, his breath catching in his throat, urged Lucian forward, pulling on his arm. "We have to go, Lucian! That's what they told us to do. Get away, protect the Tears!"

But Lucian stood frozen, his gaze fixed on the dark expanse of the ocean where Lorelai had disappeared. A storm of emotions raged within him – fear for the Queen, a growing affection for her selfless courage, and the gnawing desperation of his curse.

"No," he said, his voice low and resolute. "I can't. They're fighting that… that thing for the Tears. And if it falls into its hands…" He clenched the shimmering orb tightly.

Finley's eyes widened in disbelief. "Are you mad? The Queen herself told us to flee! And what about your curse, Lucian? This was supposed to be about healing!"

"Healing can wait," Lucian declared, his jaw set. "That darkness… I felt it. It's the same shadow that clings to me. Maybe… maybe this is the reason I was meant to come here. Not just to be healed, but to fight it."

"Fight it? In your state?" Finley argued, his voice rising in panic. "Lucian, you can barely control the beast as it is! The Tears are meant for your cure, not to fuel that… that monster within you!"

"But what if it's the only way to save her?" Lucian countered, his gaze intense. "The Queen… Finley, I… I feel something for her. A connection I can't explain. I can't just run while she fights for her domain, for the very thing that could save me."

A fierce argument erupted between them, Finley desperately trying to reason with Lucian, to remind him of their initial goal. But Lucian's mind was made up, driven by a burgeoning affection and a sense of responsibility he couldn't ignore.

"There has to be a way," Lucian insisted, his eyes gleaming with a dangerous determination. "You said the beast form… it draws on the curse. And the Tears… they hold immense power. What if… what if I could channel that power, enhance the beast, become strong enough to fight that entity?"

Finley stared at him, aghast. "Lucian, that's madness! You risk losing yourself completely!"

"Tell me the mantra, Finley," Lucian demanded, his voice raw with urgency. "The words to… to command the transformation. You deciphered it from those ancient texts. Tell me how to draw on the beast, to amplify its strength with the Tears."

Torn between his loyalty and his fear for Lucian's soul, Finley hesitated. But the desperate look in Lucian's eyes, the raw emotion that mirrored a love he hadn't fully acknowledged until this moment, finally broke his resolve.

With a trembling voice, Finley recited the ancient words, the guttural syllables resonating with a dark power. As the final word left his lips, Lucian closed his eyes, clutching the Tears of the Azure. A surge of energy coursed through him, the power of the Elixir intertwining with the darkness of the curse. His body began to contort, the transformation more violent, more complete than before. His muscles bulged, his claws sharpened, and the serpentine scales spread further across his skin. But there was a new element to his beast form now – an aura of raw, untamed power, fueled by the magic of the Tears.

When the transformation was complete, the beast that stood before Finley was terrifying, yet it held a semblance of Lucian's will, a fierce determination burning in its glowing eyes.

"Wait for me, Finley," the beast growled, the voice still recognizably Lucian's, though distorted. "I have to go back. I have to help them."

With a powerful surge, the beast Lucian turned and plunged back into the dark waters, leaving Finley alone on the shore, his heart heavy with fear and a desperate hope for their survival.
