"I will gain nothing by getting the approval of your grandfather if you do not love me. Why will I do it then if I do not care for him?" she explained when he looked at her stunned.
The words landed softly but cut deep. She snorted and looked away. He had known Evelyn for a long time. But she had always been cold and arrogant. He knew she cared for him. But that did not mean he would reciprocate that feeling.
She was too sharp, cold and arrogant. She did not need someone by her side at all. When she noticed, he would not speak further, she looked away.
She bent down, picked up the file without another word, and walked to the desk. She didn't sit near him, she took the far end. She placed the file gently down and opened it. Her hands were steady as she scanned the contents, flipping through the first few pages.
Damien stared at her in silence, the burn in his chest growing sharper with every second. He hated how unaffected she looked. He hated that part of him wanted her to look at him and tell him that she needed him. That she did not know work and wanted him to help. But he knew she would not! She always does things with calm detachment, not with the emotions of a wife! But he knew their relationship was not real.
She simply turned another page, with cold and focused eyes
"I will finish the proposal," she said softly, without looking up. "It is not that hard."
"Hah! Not that hard!" Damon laughed dryly as he looked at the girl, "Evelyn, after finishing your degree, you have done nothing but resting at home. Even as my secretary, you have achieved nothing more than sorting my files and brewing my coffee. Do not act like you know everything." she frowned and looked at the file again.
She already knew the details of the project. Her own company had several dealing with this company. One word from her, and the company would accept the proposal even if she was bearing a loss.
Damon noticed how she was only looking at him coldly. He rushed to her and snatched the file from her.
"If you want to make a joke of yourself, you are free to do that. But do not drag me in your tricks." he opened the door and left the room.
Evelyn looked at the empty room and sighed. She did not linger on his words. Since he did not need help, she would not waste her time on him, she knew that Damien hated her because she was better. So, she hid all her progress with him.
She had hoped that he would start to like her if she would behave ignorant, but that did not happen. One after one, he continued to bring more girls home. And now she was so exhausted that she did not even want to put up a fight for him. She was only here for the family that took care of her.
She closed the door and started working on the project file. Either he wanted her help or not, she was giving it to him, like she had given years to this family. That was all she could return in exchange for the time and love she had gotten.
When she was done, she closed the file and stretched herself. The door knocked then.
"Madam, the dinner is prepared. Will you have it mastered?" Evelyn could see the hesitation in the housekeeper's voice but her expressions did not change.
"What about the young master?" she asked as she closed the laptop and stood up.
"That… I could not find him anywhere. And his phone is off." The woman looked worried. But Evelyn had already predicted it. It was not the first time it was happening, the only difference was… she was not fighting for it this time.
"It is alright, he must have returned to the company for an urgent meeting. You can inform grandpa, I will be there in five minutes." hearing the perfect excuse, the housekeeper;s eyes brightened and she left hurriedly.
Evelyn went to the washroom and splashed cold water on her face. Her mind is finally better. But she stopped when she reached the dining room. Her eyes flickered when she watched Damien filling soup for his grandfather with an amiable look on his face.
That was not supposed to happen. She remembers clearly that Damien had left after throwing the files on her and went to the club. That was the time he had finally met Diana, the love of his life.
"Eveyln, why are you standing there? The food had turned cold." Evelyn blinked, she hid the shock in her eyes and walked silently to the other side.
The moment she sat down, Damien filled her bowl with soup too. She watched it with widened eyes. Could it be that he had mixed poison in it? But she pushed that thought away, and Damien did not hate her enough to do that. He had not tried to kill her till the end.
He did not need to. She had done that to herself! Yes, she had committed suicide when she was sure that she could not his love and ended her life like a fool. But even God was shocked or abhorred by her foolishness. So they have sent her back in time. She had returned to a year before their relationship had worsened.
But instead of trying to save it eagerly this time like before, she wanted to leave him for good but not before having her revenge on the woman behind her demise! Diana! She would wait calmly for that woman to return and then destroy both of them together!
"Are you not going to drink it? Or are you worried that I have mixed something in it?"
