The young man walked through the crowded alleys, his worn-out clothes a testament to his poverty. But despite his struggles, his eyes sparkled with determination. As he turned a corner, he spotted a group of kids playing with a makeshift ball, their laughter and shouts filling the air.
He remembered when he was like them too,living without any care in the world,
"Time flies"he muttered under his breath,still keeping that crazy smile plastered on his coal stained face
"You know you keep on amazing me,I'd say you've gotten quite a fair share of sadness from the world,yet you keep your chin up with that crazy smile on your face.
"Well,you never can tell when mother fortune decides to smile at you,so you wouldn't want mother fortune meeting a frown on your face,would ya?" he said the the crazy smile still plastered on his face but indeed he really has gotten more than his fair share of calamity from the world
" Yeah,heard that motherfucker sure likes to smile a lot,doesn't she?,Hey, let's get some food. I'm starving!" The duo headed towards a nearby food stall, where the aroma of fried dough and sweet pastries wafted through the air. The vendor, a kind-eyed woman, greeted them with a warm smile.
The young men ordered a plate of fried dough, and the vendor added a few extra pieces, saying, "For good luck." She said while giving Kevin a knowing smile
The men had begun trooping in groups,moving in a military manner,the evening held a very heavy feeling in it,panic, anxiety,desperation,hushing of babies to their sleep,words of peace doesn't seem to work it charm
"Pa,where are you going?"
"Haaaa....."he exhaled as he squat "come my boy,you see 'am going out to keep you safe"
"Keep me safe?but we 're already safe here pa,I don't understand "
"Well son,am going out to make a sacrifice that will forever safeguard you,to restore peace to where it due,so while am out make sure you keep your mother safe and be a good boy"
"Ok pa,I promise I will,but you have to make sure you buy me an ice cream as a pay for my duty,you know like soldiers"
"Don't worry you'd get lots of ice cream when 'am back,soldier"he said as he stood up walking towards his wife
"I don't want you to go,what if you don't come back" she said as tears threatened to burst out of her face
"I promise I will come back,besides,the pay is high,enough for us to live well for the rest of our lives"
"Make sure you come back,you here,or I won't forgive you"
"Yes,I will...it all to protect the village....I promise I will come back,it a promise 'am willing to keep" he said giving a sultry smile
However those were his last words as he was part of those who perished in battle,he was brought in cold and lifeless
Well he did keep his promise,he came back home,but not in the way predicted.
His mother knelt down beside his father body,her eyes sunken, her skin pale,tears streaming freely down her face.She was lost in a world of sorrow, and he was powerless to help her,as he also was lost in a world of depression.
"He didn't fufil his promise"
