Chapter 28 - Chapter 28: The Echo of Death

The Tower of Whispers stood like a shadowy beacon in the gloom, its moving inscriptions seemingly whispering ancient secrets to those who dared to approach. Akihiko and the group moved forward cautiously, aware that each step could trigger traps or reveal hidden enemies.

"This isn't just a tower," Thalos said, his gaze fixed on the structure. "It's a remnant of the past, a place where the Tree's first guardians tried to contain its power. But it's also a death trap for anyone who isn't worthy."

Kael scanned the entrance with one of his devices, noting irregularities in the surrounding energy. "There's something here. Some kind of reality-distorting field. If we're not careful, we could get trapped in an endless illusion."

"Then let's not waste any time," Akihiko replied, adjusting his katana on his shoulder. "We must find the next fragment before Alastor catches up with us."

The Interior of the Tower

The interior of the tower was as oppressive as its exterior. The walls were covered in inscriptions that emitted a faint blue glow, and the air was charged with a heavy energy that made it difficult to breathe. As they moved forward, whispers began to fill the air, ethereal voices that seemed to come from the walls themselves.

"This is... disturbing," Aria said, placing a hand over one of the inscriptions. Immediately, a piercing scream echoed in her mind, making her jerk back.

Isabella watched Aria's reaction with a look of curiosity and caution. "Echoes of the past reside here. Every wall is permeated with the memories and suffering of those who tried to control the Tree. This place is a mirror of their despair."

"They're not just memories," Thalos interrupted. "These whispers can unleash your worst fears if you're not careful. Stay focused."

Aria took a deep breath, trying to calm herself. "It's like they're trying to drag me back into their own mistakes. This place doesn't want us to move forward."

"Then we won't give him what he wants," Akihiko replied, his voice firm as an anchor.

The History of the Tower

As they moved forward, Thalos began to explain more about the tower. "When the first guardians created this structure, it was designed as a refuge. But the Tree's power soon corrupted it. The echoes you hear are not just wailing; they are warnings. Each one belongs to someone who tried to use the Tree's power for their own purposes."

Kael frowned. "And none of them made it?"

Thalos shook his head. "No. This place is a reminder that the Tree cannot be controlled without a price. Every guardian who tried to harness its power ended up trapped here, their soul echoing eternally within these walls."

The group fell into a heavy silence, Thalos's words echoing in their thoughts as they continued on their way.

Alastor's Ambush

As they walked toward the center of the tower, a chill ran through Akihiko. He stopped suddenly, raising a hand to signal silence. "He's here."

Before they could react, a sound wave shook the air, followed by an echo that made the walls vibrate. From the shadows, a figure slowly emerged. It was Alastor, the Shadow Silencer, dressed in a dark cloak that seemed to absorb the light around him. His presence was suffocating, and an aura of resonant energy enveloped him.

"You're fast," Alastor said, his voice seeming to come from all directions at once. "But not fast enough. Viktor wants that fragment, and I'll make sure he gets it."

Without waiting for a response, he raised a hand and unleashed a wave of sharp sound that forced the group to scatter. The impact shattered part of the ground, leaving cracks that echoed unnervingly.

Akihiko lunged forward, drawing his katana in a swift attack. But Alastor moved like a ghost, dodging the blow with supernatural precision. With a gesture, he generated a field of absolute silence around Akihiko, cutting off all sound and leaving him vulnerable.

The Group's Response

"Aria!" Kael shouted, throwing one of his explosive devices at Alastor to try and break the silence field. The explosion generated a wave of light that momentarily destabilized Alastor's aura, allowing Akihiko to retreat.

Aria took advantage of the opening to summon a barrier that enveloped the group, blocking Alastor's sound waves. "We won't be able to defeat him if we keep reacting! We need to attack him together."

Isabella stepped forward, her expression more serious than ever. "The echoes don't just reside in these walls, they also reside in him." She closed her eyes and unleashed her power, connecting to the resonant energies emanating from Alastor.

Isabella fell to her knees as Alastor's energies resonated in her mind. But instead of backing down, she smiled. "You have fears too, Alastor. And I hear them."

The hunter hesitated for a moment, enough for Akihiko to charge again. This time, his katana glowed with dark energy channeled from the Void. His blow struck Alastor's aura, shattering part of its protection and forcing him to retreat.

Kael activated a device that amplified Alastor's sound waves, reflecting them back at him. The echo unsettled him, and for the first time, the hunter showed a crack in his composure.

"This doesn't end here," Alastor said coldly. Before they could stop him, he dissolved into a wave of sound, disappearing into the shadows of the tower.

The Lost Fragment

With Alastor out of the way, the group reached the center of the tower. There, on a pedestal covered in inscriptions, rested another golden shard, pulsing with intense energy. When Akihiko touched the shard, a fleeting vision came over him: a Tree covered in shadows, with dark fruit falling like tears.

"We did it," Aria said, though her voice was thick with fatigue.

Thalos regarded the fragment with a grim expression. "Each time we find one of these, we get closer to the truth. But we also get closer to the abyss."

Akihiko closed his fist around the fragment, feeling its energy flow through him. "Then we'll have to make sure we don't fall."

As the group left the tower, the inscriptions on the walls began to fade, as if the place knew its purpose had been fulfilled. But in the echo of the tower, Alastor's whisper persisted, promising that he would return.
