Chapter 3 - Apex

With the gates of death behind them, the words they choose to use will determine what happens next. But how did it come to this? And what is the true origin of this mission?

One day before the beginning.A tall man, wearing a lab coat and safety goggles pushed up on his forehead, walked into a green room filled with books, a desk, and a swivel chair. The man stopped in front of the desk, revealing some papers that he began to slowly examine, leafing through them one by one. Suddenly, a rather skinny man dressed in cloth clothing approached him, calling out his name.

"DOCTOR CALEX, DOCTOR CALEX," he shouted, trying to catch his attention. When he did, he revealed a face with dark eyelids, heavy under-eye bags, and a disturbing, enormous grin."What's all the commotion about, Gabriel?" he asked, without changing his expression.

Gabriel, his pupil, unable to hide his fear, delivered the news: permission had been granted to use 20 soldiers to escort the experiment.

"And… do they know exactly what they're transporting and where they're going?"Calex asked, his face still expressionless.

"N-no, sir. Orders came from above, so only the person in charge of the mission knows some of the details."

Calex's eyes glowed a reddish hue. Without further interest, he returned to what he was doing. But Gabriel pressed on, asking about the equipment and transportation. After all, this was an unofficial mission to a place as dangerous as the Infinity Tower.

With a small chuckle, Calex responded,"An old military aircraft, Category 2 fire rifles, Category 1 energy pistols, and a few basic rations. They have standard camouflage suits that allow them to blend with their surroundings for a few minutes."

The answer left Gabriel frozen.

"Why only that? You can't send them with such basic equipment to a place like that—it would be a death sentence!" Gabriel didn't understand why the experiment's escorts were being sent so poorly equipped to a place where even a tank wouldn't last long.

But he wouldn't have to wait long for an answer.

To Calex, it didn't matter. The soldiers were just an excuse to get permission to transport his masterpiece to such a place. Tomorrow, he would personally organize a demonstration so the higher-ups could witness his jewel—his masterpiece—in action, in the greatest setting to prove its success. The fact that all the escorts would die and leave the experiment completely alone would only serve as a better demonstration of what it was capable of.

Gabriel was in shock as he realized his mentor's true plan—just to show the superiors what he was capable of.Calex, now with an even wider grin, finished by saying:

"Don't worry. This has a noble purpose—to recover the data from the experiments left there after the chaos. And besides, it will eliminate every being I command, making it easier to reclaim the zone. Ever since we lost that place, only experiments and other things have been spreading across the city. There's nothing to worry about. Just trust—trust in the Apex."
