Chapter 8 - Puffed Pastries and Proposals

Saturday mornings were always a day when people chilled out and eased off the stress of the working days. It's also a day to clean up the whole house; some use their Saturday to catch up with the latest trends around the globe. Mirabel had this lifestyle, but after her " fresh start "she dedicated her Saturday to work, and now that she's determined to get the company back on its two feet, she'll do absolutely anything to make it a success.

Mirabel is seen on her comfy bed, laying down, looking at the ceiling with her laptop beside her. The room is suddenly enveloped by the pleasant aroma emanating from the kitchen. Mirabel stands up from her bed and says to herself, "Oh my goodness, what's Nanny up to? This smells good." She rushes to the kitchen and sees Nanny baking. "Nanny, are you baking puff pastry?" Mirabel inquires.

"Yes, dear, I am," Nanny replies.

As a kid, Mirabel loved puffed pastry; it was her best dish, and she loved it when her mom baked it for her. However, her mom used it to her own advantage; anytime her room was unkept, she would always say, "Hmm, I am about to make someone's best food, and I don't think she'll be able to taste it because her room is unkept." On hearing this, Mirabel would grumble, but she'd immediately rush to her room to clean it when she smelled the aroma. Her mom always wanted Mirabel to learn to clean up after herself and not become spoilt and leave it to others to do her work for her. Her dad always hated this act, and he would confront his wife, saying, "I hired Nanny to take care of this sort of thing."

"But where did you get the recipe?" Mirabel asks.

"I was going through old stuff, and I saw your Mama's recipe book," Nanny says, showing her the book. On seeing the book, Mirabel gets emotional and starts crying. Nanny approaches her and consoles her. "Mirabel, come on, don't cry..."

"I miss her so much, Nanny. I can't help it," Mirabel says.

"I miss her too, but am I crying?" Nanny replies. Mirabel smiles and says, "Nanny, you say the funniest things, don't you?"

"What? I can't help it," Nanny says, and they both laugh. "Why don't you set up the table while I finish this up?" Nanny suggests.

"Okay," Mirabel replies. As Mirabel sets up the table, she hears the sound of the doorbell and says, "Who's there?"

"It's Anabelle," her friend replies. "Okay, I'm coming..." Mirabel rushes to the door and opens it. "Girl, what's up... You're here so early..." Mirabel says.

"So... I told you I was going to come," Anabelle replies. "Yeah, but I wasn't expecting you to come this early, I mean it's a minute past 7."

"So, should I go back?" Anabelle asks in an annoyed tone. "No, come in," Mirabel says, paving the way for Anabelle to enter.

"Hmm, what is this amazing aroma? Who's baking?" Anabelle asks as she enters the house, turning to Mirabel. "I hope it's not you," she inquires.

"No, it's Nanny," Mirabel replies. "Thank goodness," Anabelle says. "What do you mean 'thank goodness'?" Mirabel asks, her eyes wide with curiosity.

"Girl, I need not remind you that when it comes to baking, no offense, but you have the rating of 0," Anabelle says, sitting down on the sofa.

"What?! I'm a good baker," Mirabel says, also sitting down on the sofa, leaning in close to Anabelle. Anabelle bursts into laughter, looking at Mirabel with every laugh.

"Why are you laughing? Ain't I good at baking?" Mirabel asks.

"Is that a question? You are bad at baking; in fact, bad is an overstatement..." Anabelle says. "Jeez, Belle, that's hurtful," Mirabel says, placing her right hand on her chest.

"I don't mean to hurt you, but it's a fact... You have several talents, but baking isn't one of them," Anabelle says. "Oh really? Do you have proof to back up this statement?" Mirabel inquires, her voice fierce.

"Yes... of course. Remember that time you baked a doughnut at my place?" Anabelle asks. "Yes, so..." Mirabel replies.

"You literally burned the whole thing. The doughnuts were black, and my whole kitchen was smoky. My flour was wasted by Miss Messy," Anabelle says. "Who the hell is Miss Messy

"Who the hell is Miss Messy?" Mirabel asks, her voice raised in surprise.

"You, of course," Anabelle replies with a grin. "It took me the whole weekend to make my kitchen the way it was before Miss Messy struck."

"What?!" Mirabel shouts, standing up. "I don't believe this..."

Just then, Nanny interrupts, entering the sitting room. "Come on, girls, stop fighting. Come to the table, or else I'm going to finish the breakfast."

They both head to the table as Nanny brings out the puffed pastries, backed up by hot chocolate, and they all sit down to have breakfast.

"Nanny, is it true that I'm not a good baker?" Mirabel inquires.

"Well, well, you are good at making tea, I guess," Nanny replies with a smile. Anabelle bursts into laughter and says, "Told you."

Mirabel's phone beeps, and she checks the message. On reading it, she jumps up from her chair and shouts, "Yes!!!!!!!..."

She pulls Nanny and Anabelle up and spins them around, "Yes!!!! We've got the job...." Mirabel exclaims, spinning herself, Nanny, and Anabelle around the room.

"Mirabel, calm down, I'm not as energetic as you, I'm getting old..." Nanny says in an effort to calm Mirabel down.

Mirabel stops spinning and shouts, "They've given us the job... We've got the job...."

"What job?" Anabelle asks, her eyes dizzy from the spinning.

"I've been trying to get my company a proposal for like two or more weeks now, and we've been hired. They've given us a chance... The souvenirs company has hired us to create an ad for their new product," Mirabel explains.

"Wow, I'm so happy for you. We both got good news," Anabelle says, giving Mirabel a hug. Nanny sheds a tear and then joins the hugging.

They release each other, and Nanny says, "I like seeing you like this, Mirabel... Congratulations."

"Thank you, I wouldn't have done it without your support," Mirabel says.

"I'm sure your dad and mom will be proud of you," Nanny says, her voice shaky.

"Yes..." Mirabel replies, her eyes soaked with tears.

"Mira, don't try it... You just got good news, and you want to shed tears... Don't cry," Anabelle says. Anabelle hugs Mirabel, and tears drop from Mirabel's cheek. Anabelle wipes her tears and comforts her.

"It's all my fault. I shouldn't have mentioned your parents," Nanny says.

"No... no... you're right. They will be happy to see me happy," Mirabel says.

"Stop this now... The food is getting cold. Let's eat," Anabelle says, dragging the two to the dining table.

They resume eating and chatting, accompanied by the warmth of the moment. Mirabel had finally gotten the motivation she desperately needed. The job proposal closed all negativity towards the new beginning she wants.
