Chapter 36 - Chapter 34 – The Smiling Grave

The graveyard stretched endlessly beneath the dimming sky, a sprawling sea of cold stone monuments, worn by centuries and draped in creeping vines that whispered with the wind. Each gravestone stood as a silent testament to forgotten lives, heroes, villains, and those lost in between — but none more tragic than the Crownless.

Kael's boots crunched softly on the scattered leaves, his eyes sharp despite the growing twilight. Beside him, Juno's hand hovered near the hilt of her sword, her gaze cutting through the gloom like a hawk's. Erisen Hollow walked ahead, his unsettling smile never fading, as if the shadows themselves bent to his will.

"This place…" Kael said quietly, "It's like the dead aren't really gone."

"They aren't," Erisen replied, his voice almost a whisper, blending with the rustling leaves. "Not fully. The Crownless linger here — prisoners of a fate worse than death."

The name sent a shiver down Kael's spine. Crownless. A forgotten faction that defied the Ascension Code, cast out and erased from history. Kael had heard legends — half-remembered tales of warriors who refused to bow to the system's rules and paid the price with eternal limbo.

Erisen stopped beside a jagged stone, weathered and cracked, the name Lysander Veyne barely legible. He reached out, fingertips grazing the surface. The moment he touched the stone, Kael felt a sudden jolt, as if a thousand silent screams echoed in his mind.

"Lysander was my brother," Erisen said softly. "A blade who challenged the lords of the Ascension Code, seeking freedom where none could be found."

Kael swallowed the lump in his throat. He sensed not just sorrow but fury in Erisen's tone, a rage bottled up for decades. "Why now? Why show yourself after all this time?"

Erisen's smile deepened, more enigmatic than ever. "Because the fabric of reality is tearing. The Echo Split—the rift between worlds—is growing. It threatens to swallow everything. I am bound here until that threat is dealt with. And you, Kael, are the key."

Juno's eyes narrowed. "Why me?"

"Because you are not like the others," Erisen said, turning to face Kael fully. "You bear the Nullthread and the Ashen Mark. You are the first to walk the line between Crownless and Ascended, between chaos and order."

Kael's heart thundered. So many times, his path had felt uncertain, haunted by shadows of doubt. Now, standing in this endless graveyard, he understood the weight of his destiny more clearly than ever.

The air shimmered suddenly, and glowing runes erupted across the stones, pulsing with ancient power. Kael's system chimed sharply:

[NEW QUEST UNLOCKED: Walk the Shattered Trail]

[Objective: Unlock Erisen Hollow's Memory Fragments.]

[Reward: Crownless Sovereignty Ability Upgrade.]

Kael inhaled deeply, feeling the raw energy surge through him. "What does this Crownless Sovereignty mean?"

Erisen's smile softened, almost wistful. "It is power born not from the Ascension Code, but from defiance — from forging your own path beyond the system's chains. But it demands sacrifice."

Juno shifted beside Kael, hand tightening on her sword's hilt. "Sacrifice? What kind of sacrifice?"

"The kind that tests your soul," Erisen answered, voice low. "The kind that leaves you questioning who you are."

Kael's mind reeled. He had fought countless battles, completed grueling trials, and faced death itself — but this was different. This was a journey into the unknown depths of himself, into a liminal space where reality frayed at the edges.

Erisen began to walk slowly among the gravestones, his fingertips trailing over names and symbols etched long ago. With each touch, Kael's vision flooded with vivid memories: battles waged in blood-soaked fields, laughter and tears of lost comrades, betrayals sharp as any blade.

One memory surged forward — a young Lysander standing tall against overwhelming odds, his twin blades flashing with lethal grace before being overwhelmed and falling into darkness.

Another showed Mira Hollow, Erisen's sister, her bright smile chasing away shadows, before she was swallowed by the void, silenced forever.

Kael staggered under the weight of the revelations. Each memory was a shard of a broken past, a puzzle piece to a truth long buried.

"Why show me this?" Kael asked, struggling to keep his footing.

"Because to walk the Shattered Trail, you must understand the cost of freedom," Erisen said. "The Crownless didn't die because they were weak — they died because they dared to break the system. If you want to claim sovereignty, you must be ready to face the darkness within."

Zaiya, silent until now, stepped forward. Her eyes gleamed with resolve. "If the Echo Split grows unchecked, it will unravel all worlds — the Ascended, the Nullborn, and even the Code itself. We have no choice but to stop it."

Kael nodded. "I will face it. But I won't do it blindly."

Erisen's smile was sharp now, a blade honed on centuries of pain. "Good. Because this is only the beginning. The trial awaits, and it will push you beyond every limit you've known."

The gravestones around them glowed brighter, symbols spinning in a vortex of ethereal light. Kael felt the ground tremble beneath him, a powerful force pulling at his core.

"Are you ready?" Erisen asked, eyes burning with intensity.

Kael met his gaze firmly, feeling the full weight of his destiny. "I'm ready."

The world around them bent and twisted, folding like pages in a book, and Kael stepped forward into the unknown.
