Chapter 39 - Chapter 39: The Masked Offer

Celestial Dawn Sect – Inner Circle Grounds

The Sect's main gate loomed ahead, towering over the terraced landscape like a fortress carved into heaven itself. Jade walls gleamed in the morning sun. Guard cultivators in silver-trimmed robes stood at attention—not just for defense, but for spectacle.

Wushen, Yiran, and Bai walked toward the gate with calm steps, heads high, robes clean. They looked like elite disciples returning from fieldwork—which, technically, they were.

But only they knew the truth.

They were not here to report.

They were here to infiltrate.

And the Listening Court was their destination.

Ding! Passive effect engaged: "Veil of Legitimacy" – Disciples recognized as legitimate members due to recent commendation.Current suspicion level: Low.Mission Objective: Reach Listening Court Archive without triggering internal investigation flags.

At the gate, a white-robed elder stopped them.

"You're the ones from Dawnmist?"

Yiran bowed slightly. "Yes, Elder. Disciples Yiran, Bai Xueyin, and Lin Wushen. We were instructed to report our actions during the Qinli incident."

The man narrowed his eyes. "You're early."

"We thought it wise to show discipline," Bai said, tone neutral.

He stared at them for a breath too long—then waved them through.

"Very well. Report to the Mission Review Pavilion first. You'll be assigned an escort for the archives afterward."

Wushen's stomach tightened.

An escort would complicate everything.

Yiran's hand brushed his shoulder—subtle, steadying.

"We adapt," she whispered.

He nodded once.

And they walked into the beast's maw.

Meanwhile, back on Dawnmist Peak, the wind shifted.

Again.

But this time, it wasn't a musical ripple or spiritual feedback.

It was a presence.

Someone had stepped onto the mountain without triggering the outer array.

That alone told Luo Feng enough.

Only someone of equal or greater formation mastery—or someone keyed into the system itself—could do that.

Kaelen moved first.

Blade out.

Aura coiled tight.

Luo Feng raised a hand.

"No."

Kaelen frowned. "You know them?"

"I know who it is."

A woman stood near the training post where Yiran had once knelt.

She wore simple robes—grey and gold, no Sect markings. Her hair was cropped short, her face young but ageless in that cultivator way. Eyes the color of burning parchment.

She didn't bow.

She didn't smile.

She just said,

"Luo Feng. You haven't changed much."

Luo Feng approached slowly.

"Elder Zhi."

The name left his lips like ash.

Zhi Meiling.

Once a prodigy. Once his colleague.

And once… the only person who had seen the original Mentor System fracture from the inside.

"You've come far," she said. "Raising orphans. Building your own peak. Guiding them toward heretical power like a proud heron shaping vipers."

Kaelen bristled, but didn't speak.

Luo Feng only asked, "Why are you here?"

Meiling's smile was cold.

"To make you an offer."

"No."

"You haven't heard it yet."

"I don't need to."

She stepped forward.

And pulled a scroll from her sleeve.

The seal was familiar.

Too familiar.

Silver and black.

The Listening Court's binding sigil.

Ding! Detected: Spiritual Contract – Tier 4 Authority Override.Effect: Accepting this scroll initiates a temporary alliance with the Listening Court.Boons: Official legitimacy, archive access, and resource stipend.Cost: Oversight of disciples. System restrictions on teaching methods.

System Prompt: Warning. Accepting this contract will reduce system growth rate by 34%.

"You're choking," Meiling said. "The Sect watches you now. Every step. Every lesson. But if you sign this, you'll be seen as… useful. Manageable."

Luo Feng didn't respond.

"I know what you're building, Luo. I see it. And I'm telling you—the higher you lift them, the more they'll want to cut your wings."

She placed the scroll on the training post.

"Read it. Or don't. But know this—when the second chord is played, the Listening Court won't be merciful. And you'll need friends in high places."

She turned.

"Goodbye, Mentor."

And vanished.

Back at the Mission Review Pavilion, Wushen sat rigid on a meditation cushion while a bored scribe flipped through paperwork.

"Lin Wushen… ah, yes. Music-based technique. Hollow-Echo… hm."

He frowned.

"You've been granted temporary clearance to access resonance files. You'll be escorted by Attendant Mu. Please keep your flute sheathed while indoors."

Wushen bit back a retort.

"Yes, Elder."

The man waved them off.

And a moment later, a younger woman in olive robes appeared.

"I'm Mu Lian," she said with a polite smile. "I'll take you to the archive. Please don't stray from my guidance. The Court… doesn't like echo accidents."

Yiran nodded. "We'll behave."

Bai's eyes never left the woman's fingers.

Too smooth for an archivist.

Swordswoman. Hidden.

They followed.

The Listening Court was a spiral-shaped building of glass-veined stone, built like a tuning fork embedded in the earth. Soft vibrations rippled through the halls. Every step made the air hum.

The deeper they went, the heavier it became.

Wushen's ears rang. Bai's breath frosted. Even Yiran had to reinforce her mental defenses.

"This is a memory vault," Wushen whispered. "Built to trap songs, not just store them."

Mu Lian turned with a smile that didn't reach her eyes.

"Exactly."

Then, softly—

"I know why you're really here."

They froze.

Mu continued walking.

"I won't report it. Not yet. But if you reach too deep into the silence… it will sing back."

They reached the sealed archive.

A door of crystal and black-iron runes.

Only Yiran could decode them—her formation sense guiding her fingers to the right sequence.

It opened with a sigh.

And inside… the air tasted like regret.

Scrolls. Broken flutes. Etched talismans covered in dust.

And on a pedestal in the back—wrapped in red thread—

A sealed box humming with a single, silent note.

Wushen stepped forward.

His heart beat in rhythm with the box.

One beat.

Then two.

Then—

It called his name.
