Chapter 15 – The Burning Script
The portal snapped open like a wound in the air, its edges pulsing with liquid fire.
Kael didn't hesitate.
He stepped through.
The world on the other side was nothing like the shattered cities or fog-choked forests he'd seen before. This was deeper. Older.
They stood within a vault made entirely of black stone. Ancient script crawled across the floor like veins, glowing softly—alive. Floating relics spun slowly in the air: fragments of weapons, preserved pieces of time. At the center of it all, towering above the chamber, was the Codex Core.
And standing before it—
Lior.
---
Reunion of Shadows
Lior's back was turned, his coat flowing like dark smoke. But he spoke without turning.
> "So… the prodigal failure returns."
Kael didn't flinch. "I'm not here for you. I'm here for that." He pointed at the Core.
Lior turned. His face was pale, his eyes brighter than flame.
> "And what would you do with it? Rewrite the world? Or just burn it all down like your father did?"
Behind Kael, Roan readied her blades. The Architect remained still, her eyes locked on the floating Codex.
> "He's trying to merge with it," she whispered. "He doesn't want to rewrite the story. He wants to become it."
---
A War of Words
Kael stepped closer.
> "This world's story is broken. The strong devour the weak. Guilds treat people like pawns. Magic is currency. Hope is a joke. You want to become the Codex?"
He raised his spear.
> "Then I'll become its final editor."
Lior laughed—a sound that echoed like cracking glass.
> "Do you even know what that power will do to you? You can't control both the Abyss and the Dawn."
Kael's eye flickered with golden flame.
> "Then I'll forge something new."
---
Ascension Begins
Lior's hands snapped forward.
The Codex opened mid-air.
Pages turned themselves, faster and faster, like a storm made of time.
Script ripped off the stone walls, flowing into him. His body rose into the air as tendrils of living text wrapped around his limbs.
> "You are too late," Lior said, voice distorted. "The world has already been rewritten."
Kael felt it.
Reality shifting. The gravity of choices made long ago—changing.
Roan clutched her chest. "I… don't remember… where I'm from."
Even the Architect wavered.
Kael gritted his teeth.
He took one step.
Then another.
> "You forgot something, Lior."
> "What's that?" the half-god snarled.
> "I'm not bound by your version of the story."
And Kael threw his spear—
Right into the Codex.
---
The Flame Unwritten
The Codex screamed.
Not Lior—the book itself.
It shuddered violently. Pages caught fire.
Not real fire.
Conceptual fire.
The kind that burned not wood, but meaning.
Kael felt something inside him uncoil.
His left hand glowed blue—the Dawnflare blessing.
His right hand turned black—the Abyssal curse.
And in the center of his chest, something new emerged. A sigil no one had ever seen before.
Even the Architect gasped.
> "That's… that's not possible."
Kael's body lit up with raw language—the kind only gods could speak.
Lior tried to resist. But Kael was already mid-leap.
---
Rewrite Initiated
He grabbed the Codex.
Not the shell—the soul of it.
And he spoke just one line:
> "This world… belongs to the broken who chose to stand."
A ripple exploded.
Lior was thrown into the wall, his body cracking.
Reality itself bent—and snapped back.
Roan remembered her village.
The Architect's chains vanished.
The Codex Core floated silently, pages now blank.
Kael landed, breathing hard.
---
A New Chapter Begins
Roan walked to his side. "You just rewrote fate itself."
Kael didn't answer.
He looked at the spear in his hand—now fused with a sliver of the Codex.
Then at the world reshaping outside the vault.
> "No," he said. "I just gave it back to the people."
Behind them, the Architect spoke softly.
> "Then we must protect it. Because someone will always try to write over it again."
Kael nodded.
And walked forward.
Into a world reborn.
