Chapter 31 - Chapter 31: The Wife's Secret

At this moment, what I needed the most was calmness. I had to sort out my thoughts carefully.

Although I wasn't entirely sure why Lu Wan had come here, one thing was certain: someone must have provided her with the clues.

I was almost certain that this person was the one who had truly betrayed me from behind.

After much deliberation, I couldn't help but think of Gu Xiaofei.

Only she could be the mastermind behind all of this.

When I was involved with her, I had been extremely cautious, yet I still fell into her trap.

Though I was seething with anger, I had no choice but to swallow this bitter pill.

Now, I had to face my wife's wrath.

At this moment, Lu Wan sat down on the bed, waiting for my response.

Given the situation, what could I possibly explain to my wife?

After some thought, I tentatively asked her, "Honey, why are you here?"

This was merely a probing question, as I really wanted to gauge her reaction.

Upon hearing this, Lu Wan's anger flared up instantly. She said, "What? You're cheating on me, and I can't come to catch you in the act?"

It's important to note that my wife is a well-mannered and educated person. For her to use such harsh words meant that her anger had reached its peak.

I always prided myself on being a family-oriented man, but I never expected to be caught in bed by my wife today.

The situation had taken a complete 180-degree turn, which was entirely unexpected.

At this moment, Shen Minhong emerged from the bathroom.

Freshly showered, she was wrapped in a towel, and her ample bosom was truly captivating.

Seeing this, my wife became even more furious. She said, "Zhao Jian, our marriage is over."

My heart sank, knowing that my family was utterly ruined.

At this point, I knew that any explanation would be futile. Given my wife's personality, the more I tried to explain, the more hypocritical she would think I was.

I sat down on the bed, lit a cigarette, and slowly smoked it without saying a word.

Logically, the most awkward person in this situation should have been Shen Minhong, yet she lay on the bed, looking completely at ease.

My wife stood up and said, "Zhao Jian, I finally understand what kind of person you are. I must have been blind to have married you."

With that, she turned and left, leaving me sitting there in a daze.

At this moment, my mood had hit rock bottom.

But then, something unexpected happened. Shen Minhong, who had just finished her shower, suddenly embraced me.

Although she was three years older than me, women at her age were in their prime, and she had an undeniable allure, especially for younger men.

I had to admit that I was quite infatuated with Shen Minhong, especially since she had been the campus beauty back in school.

"Hey, handsome, your wife's gone. What are you afraid of?" she teased.

But in this situation, I had no interest in indulging in such activities. I pushed her away, walked to the window, and lit another cigarette.

Shen Minhong followed me and said, "A moment of springtime is worth a thousand pieces of gold. Even the ancients knew this. Why are you so clueless about romance?"

Damn it, I felt like this woman was clinging to me. Were women nowadays so open and eager to cheat?

I shook my head and said to Shen Minhong, "I'm not in the mood today. Maybe another time."

Of course, Shen Minhong knew this was just an excuse.

The bullet was already in the chamber, yet I refused to fire. Anyone in her position would be frustrated.

Shen Minhong suddenly put on a stern face and asked, "Are you still thinking about your wife?"

I remained silent, which was as good as admitting it.

Shen Minhong continued, "Handsome, don't think your wife is a saint. I've heard from Gu Xiaofei that your wife has been cheating on you behind your back."

This statement deeply wounded my pride. I turned around and stared at Shen Minhong, saying, "You're lying!"

Shen Minhong sneered and said, "I understand women's minds better than anyone. They all act prim and proper on the surface, but deep down, who knows what they're really thinking."

I recalled the last time I was intimate with my wife. She had seemed rather indifferent to my advances.

If what Shen Minhong said was true, then there must be a serious issue with Lu Wan.

Perhaps Shen Minhong's words had struck a chord. I stared at her and asked, "What else do you know?"

Shen Minhong seemed to mock me as she said, "What? Your wife's been cheating on you, and you didn't even know? And yet you have the nerve to catch me in the act."

For some reason, I had a feeling that the reason my wife hadn't made a big scene was because she felt guilty.

Perhaps coming to catch me in the act was just an excuse for her to divorce me, and I had unwittingly fallen into their trap.

Thinking this, my mood worsened. I straightened my clothes and said to Shen Minhong, "I have something to attend to today. I'll contact you another time."

Hearing this, Shen Minhong's expression immediately changed, but before she could react, I slipped out of the room.

This woman would probably hate me for the rest of her life.

As soon as I left the hotel, I immediately called my wife.

I was anxious to explain everything.

At least tonight, I had resisted temptation and hadn't done anything to betray her.

But after three calls, she didn't answer.

Ten minutes later, I received a text message from my wife.

"Zhao Jian, don't call me anymore. Let's get a divorce."

This simple sentence shattered all my dreams.

Realizing that things were beyond repair, I didn't call her back. Instead, I drove my BMW back to my cold, empty home.

Lying on the sofa, I suddenly felt completely drained, as if I had been hollowed out.

Time passed unnoticed, and it was already midnight, yet I felt no trace of sleepiness.

But then, my phone suddenly rang.

Normally, at this hour, I would have turned it off to avoid disturbing my wife's sleep, as Lu Wan was a light sleeper and easily awakened.

So, I was curious about who could be calling me at this time.

My first thought was Gu Xiaofei, as she had been calling me frequently lately.

But I quickly dismissed that idea, as Gu Xiaofei was probably busy with her new lover and had already forgotten about me.

With curiosity, I picked up the phone and saw that it was Lu Feng calling.

What could he want at this ungodly hour?

Given the current state of my relationship with Lu Wan, he couldn't possibly be unaware of it.

Perhaps I still had some lingering feelings for Lu Wan, so I answered the call.

As soon as I picked up, Lu Feng started crying.

What the hell? A grown man crying in the middle of the night?

No wonder Lu Feng was such a failure. I looked down on him from the bottom of my heart.

"Brother-in-law, can you lend me some money?"

Hearing this, my head started to throb, as I remembered giving him over three thousand yuan not long ago.

My intention had been for him to take care of my father-in-law, but now he was asking for money again.

I was furious and asked, "Didn't I just give you over three thousand a few days ago? How could you have spent it all so quickly?"

"Ah, don't mention it. Dad suddenly fell seriously ill, and that money wasn't even enough to cover the hospital deposit."

Hearing this, I was certain he was lying.

If that were truly the case, Lu Wan would have called me immediately, not him.

Moreover, given my current financial situation, I was struggling to pay the mortgage.

After some thought, I said to Lu Feng, "Listen, brother-in-law, I don't have any money right now. Why don't you ask Lu Wan? After all, we're family. She might be able to help."

Perhaps sensing something in my tone, Lu Feng asked, "What's going on between you and my sister?"

It seemed he was completely unaware, so I tentatively asked, "Did Lu Wan have a boyfriend in college?"

Hearing this, Lu Feng suddenly fell silent, as if unwilling to answer.

I knew I had to push harder if I wanted him to tell the truth.

So, I said, "Here's the deal. I'll transfer three thousand to you later, but you have to tell me about Lu Wan's college days."

Hearing this, Lu Feng was overjoyed and said, "Oh, that? It's one of my sister's secrets. She had a boyfriend in college named Lu Feng, and they were madly in love."

Hearing this, my heart shattered completely. My wife had been deceiving me all along.

Then, Lu Feng added, "I promised my sister to keep this a secret forever. Don't tell her I told you, okay?"

It seemed he still wanted to keep up appearances.

I immediately assured him, "Don't worry. I won't tell anyone."

Then, I asked the most crucial question.

"Lu Feng, did Lu Wan live with that guy in college?"

Perhaps because of the money, he answered without hesitation, "Of course she did. They lived together for three years and did everything."

Hearing this, my heart ached intensely.

I knew Lu Feng wouldn't lie to me. This guy would do anything for money, and I knew what kind of person he was.

But on our wedding night, my wife had clearly bled. How could that be explained?

After some thought, I said to Lu Feng, "I see. Don't worry, I'll transfer the money to you shortly."

He still seemed uneasy and said, "Brother-in-law, you mustn't tell my sister what I told you. Otherwise, she'll never let me hear the end of it."

I simply said, "I understand," and hung up.

Lying on the sofa, I felt utterly drained. It had all been a lie.

I had put so much effort into pursuing my wife, only to find out she was "used goods."

The bleeding on our wedding night must have been fake, as modern medicine could easily achieve that.

I recalled the scene from our wedding night. My wife's expression had indeed been somewhat unusual.

Perhaps I had been too excited at the time to notice, always believing she was pure.

At that moment, my phone rang again. It was Lu Feng.

This guy was relentless when it came to money, but I was broke. Where was I supposed to get the money?

I remembered that I hadn't used Alipay's credit line yet. Withdrawing three thousand shouldn't be a problem.

So, I picked up my phone and immediately transferred three thousand to Lu Feng. He stopped calling me after that.

Honestly, I despised that guy. I always thought of him as a greedy vampire.
