Chapter 9 - Chapter 9 – Class 1-B .

The news broke early that morning during breakfast in the 1-A dorms.

"Class 1-B is moving into the neighboring dorm building starting today," Aizawa announced flatly. "Be respectful, don't cause trouble. That means you, Bakugo."

"Tch," Bakugo scowled, arms crossed.

"They'll be using the same facilities," Aizawa continued, "including training grounds, cafeteria rotations, and outdoor areas. Get along—or at least pretend to."

Excitement buzzed through the class. The rival class wasn't just coming closer physically—it meant more chances to interact, spar, and size each other up.

Ren, however, simply raised an eyebrow.

So it begins.

---

Afternoon – Dorm Courtyard

Boxes lined the walkways as members of Class 1-B moved in with their belongings. Teachers, robots, and even support course students assisted in the process. Ren watched from a bench under the shade of a tree, sipping from a cold bottle of water.

From across the yard, Ibara Shiozaki walked calmly, a small plant pot held delicately in her hands. Her green hair curled slightly in the breeze, a soft radiance in her step.

She noticed him instantly and adjusted her path toward him.

"You again," she said gently, setting the pot beside him. "Still soaking sunlight like a plant?"

"Can't help it," Ren replied with a faint smile. "It's free energy."

She sat beside him without hesitation, folding her hands neatly in her lap.

"You've grown stronger since the Quirk Apprehension Test," she said, observing him without judgment.

Ren gave a quiet chuckle. "You've been watching?"

"I observe those who draw from nature," she said, looking forward. "And those who drain from it."

The words weren't accusatory. Just honest.

Ren's smile faded slightly. "I only take what I can give back later."

"I hope you do," she said. "Not everything can be repaid in strength."

He turned to her then, curious. "Do you think strength is wrong?"

"I think intent matters more than power," she answered simply.

For a moment, silence hung between them like a held breath.

Then she stood. "If you need peace, I'll be tending the garden behind our dorm."

"Noted," Ren said, watching her walk away, hair of vines swaying behind her.

The first joint practice session between Class 1-A and 1-B had been hastily scheduled. The field was wide and open, divided down the middle.

Team sparring, 3-on-3, mixed classes.

Ren stretched his arms lazily, waiting as the matchups were announced.

"Team One: Ren Takami, Itsuka Kendo, Kinoko Komori."

"Team Two: Tokoyami, Reiko Yanagi, and Rikido Sato."

Interesting mix, Ren thought, eyeing his new partners. Itsuka—Class 1-B's bold and intelligent rep, with a strong sense of justice and massive fists. Kinoko—the quiet mushroom girl, smiling shyly, her presence earthy and calming.

Kendo stepped up. "Looks like we're teammates."

Ren nodded. "Don't worry, I won't flirt during the fight."

She blinked, surprised. "That's… unexpectedly professional."

He smirked. "I save the flirting for after victories."

Kinoko giggled softly, covering her mouth.

The whistle blew. The three advanced into the simulated ruins.

Kendo took the front, leading with power. Kinoko dispersed spores immediately, creating patches of mushrooms along walls and ceilings, using them to track motion. Ren stayed behind, quietly drawing in moisture from the environment and forming a thin mist over their path.

He spotted Tokoyami first, Dark Shadow looming near a building corner.

"Kendo, left!" he called.

She lunged just in time, parrying a surprise assault.

Reiko emerged next, ghosting through rubble. Ren narrowed his eyes and sent a ripple of mist toward her feet—only to see it bend around her psychokinetic push.

So she can repel even air pressure. I need to get clever.

Then Sato charged in.

Kinoko responded quickly—sudden clusters of mushrooms erupted beneath his boots, slipping his balance. Ren followed through with a dense water blast, slamming Sato into a wall with a loud thud.

"One down."

Tokoyami snarled. "Dark Shadow—charge!"

The creature dove. But Ren had expected it.

He raised his hands—and absorbed the dew he'd scattered earlier, pulling it into a concentrated barrier that temporarily hardened around him and Kinoko. The impact struck hard, but held.

Kendo came in from the side, her giant hand knocking Tokoyami into Reiko, finishing the match.

Victory.

---

"Nice coordination," Kendo said, wiping her brow. "You think tactically."

Ren shrugged. "Your strength is easy to trust. Kinoko's spores gave me the layout. I just filled in the gaps."

Kinoko smiled. "You're very… um… adaptable."

He turned to her. "So are you. Nature quirks tend to be underestimated."

Kendo raised an eyebrow. "You say that like you've studied them."

"Maybe I have," he said with a grin.

Later – Behind the Dorms

Ren found himself wandering toward the 1-B garden. Ibara knelt there, humming softly as she tended to several flowering vines and herbs. She looked up at his approach, unsurprised.

"Did you win?" she asked calmly.

"We did."

"Did you learn?"

He stopped beside her. "Always."

Ibara brushed dirt from her hands and stood. "You speak as though you seek more than power."

"I do," Ren replied. "But power is what I need to get there."

"To protect something?" she asked.

"To keep a promise," he said, his eyes drifting distant.

She looked at him carefully. "You carry grief… but you hide it behind charm."

Ren smirked. "So I've been told."

Ibara turned away, smiling faintly. "Then I pray the truth finds you soon."

He watched her tend to the plants again, thoughtful.

Evening – Girls' Dorm (1-B)

Kinoko sat with Kendo, Reiko, and Ibara.

"He's weird," Kinoko said, blushing. "But nice. He compliments everyone so naturally."

"He flirts with Momo and Jiro too," Kendo added. "I'm not sure if he's serious about anyone."

Reiko said quietly, "He feels the pain. He doesn't speak of it, but it's clear in his eyes."

Ibara remained silent.

But she remembered the look in his eyes… and the pain buried behind his smirk.

---

Ren lay back on his bed, arms behind his head. The moonlight glinted through the window.

1-B's full of surprises. Ibara's words... they're not wrong.

He turned to the photo on his nightstand again.

"I'll get stronger," he whispered. "No matter what I have to take in. No matter what lines I have to cross."
