Chapter 24 - Protective Love

Nick gently calmed Sara with the strength of his unwavering love. He dried her tears, kissed her with tender patience, and promised her he would stop chasing the agency that had haunted her for so long. He had studied law to protect his family, not to force his wife to relive her pain. And if Sara wasn't ready to speak, he would never push her beyond what she could bear.

So he locked away the files and evidence he had gathered, placing them inside his private safe. He stepped back from the investigation, though Dylan, his trusted friend and colleague, continued the search discreetly, aided by Gay and Shaco. Nick knew that he and Sara remained under watch—but he also knew that nothing mattered more than her healing.

And it worked.

Sara began to breathe more freely. Her shoulders relaxed. The tremors stopped. Her tears became rare, and the nightmares faded like distant echoes. She rediscovered joy—in Nick's arms, in the laughter of their children, and in the quiet fluttering of the life growing inside her.

She loved the rainy afternoons spent beside the fire, wrapped in a blanket, listening to the hush of the world outside. She began to feel safe again. Loved. Whole. Sometimes, they would talk about names for the baby. Other times, they would say nothing at all—content just to listen to each other's breathing.

That night, after returning from visiting friends, and with the twins fast asleep, Nick and Sara shared a warm bath together. Candlelight danced on the water, and the scent of lavender and rose lingered in the air. They laughed, whispered memories, and allowed silence to wrap around them like silk.

Time ceased to exist.

Nick gazed at Sara as if she were something sacred. He placed his hands gently on her stomach and closed his eyes, as though whispering to the soul growing there. He hoped their child would inherit her laughter, her strength, her grace.

Sara watched him quietly, her heart slowly blooming again.

—"I love you, Nick," she whispered. "You make me feel alive."

Nick smiled, his eyes reflecting nothing but love. He stroked her cheek with infinite care.

—"And I love you, Sara. You are my everything. My purpose. My light."

Later, back in their bedroom, they lay entangled in each other's warmth. Nick held her close, like a silent vow. And as she began to dream, Sara murmured:

—"I love you, Nick… I need you always…"

—"I'm here," he whispered without opening his eyes. "Always, Sara."

And in the hush of night, wrapped in love and healing, they finally slept in peace.
