Chapter 15 - Weren't here to help

The silence of the night hung heavy over the battlefield, but Kaelen's thoughts were anything but silent. Each beat of his heart felt like a drum pounding louder in his chest, reverberating through the cold air, mixing with the eerie whisper of winds that felt far too deliberate. The weight of Solara's words, the truth of what he was, pressed on him like an avalanche. Every part of him screamed to turn away, to abandon it all, but something deeper inside refused to let him surrender.

"Power," he whispered under his breath, the taste of the word bitter in his mouth. "I never asked for this kind of power."

He had been born into it, thrust into it the moment he had wielded his first flame. But this this was different. This was a force beyond comprehension, beyond control. And as much as he tried to push the thought away, the door, the power behind it, called to him.

It's coming, he thought, clenching his fists. And it will come for me.

A sudden, sharp crack split the air, pulling Kaelen from his spiraling thoughts. His head whipped around, eyes scanning the dimming horizon. In the distance, beyond the charred remnants of the battlefield, a flicker of light caught his eye a glow, far too unnatural, too vibrant to be the work of any natural fire.

The light pulsed again, a rhythmic beat, almost as if it were alive. Kaelen felt an unnatural chill sweep through him, his skin tingling with the onset of something far more sinister. Solara was still standing nearby, her gaze locked onto the light, her expression unreadable. Her hand tightened on the hilt of her sword, her fingers trembling ever so slightly.

"Do you feel that?" Kaelen asked, his voice low, barely audible.

Solara's eyes narrowed, and she nodded, her lips pressed into a thin line. "It's the door," she said quietly. "It's waking. And it's calling for you."

The words seemed to hang in the air, their meaning sinking in like a stone thrown into still water. Kaelen's pulse quickened, his mind racing with a thousand questions. The door... He had barely comprehended what it meant to be its key, and now, it was awake, stirring with a power that made the very ground beneath him tremble.

Without another word, Solara moved forward, her steps purposeful, her senses clearly attuned to the strange, haunting presence that hung in the air. Kaelen followed, his heart hammering with an instinct he couldn't deny. There was something in the air, something old, something inevitable.

They reached the edge of the forest, where the glow grew stronger, brighter, its light pulling them toward it like a magnetic force. As they passed through the trees, the light engulfed them, and Kaelen felt a coldness seep into his bones. The world around them seemed to warp, bending and distorting as if reality itself were unravelling.

Then, they emerged into a clearing, and there it was. The door.

It wasn't like anything Kaelen had expected. It wasn't a grand, imposing structure or a flashy relic from ancient times. It was a simple door, but it radiated a power so ancient that it seemed to hum with the weight of centuries. The door stood alone in the center of the clearing, an eerie light spilling from the cracks around its edges. The air was thick with magic, with an ancient, primal force that seemed to both repulse and allure him at once.

Kaelen's breath hitched. The power, it felt... alive. It called to him. He could feel it in his blood, in his very soul, beckoning him closer.

"I told you," Solara's voice broke through his dazed thoughts, a soft, resigned tone in her words. "You are the key. You were always meant to open it."

"I don't want to," Kaelen said, his voice barely a whisper. "I can't."

But deep down, he knew the truth. He had no choice. The door would open with or without him. But whether he had the strength to control what came after was a question that gnawed at him, consuming his every thought.

Solara's gaze softened. "Kaelen, this isn't just about you. It's about everyone. You can either let the world burn in darkness, or you can try to contain the storm. But no matter what, you will be the one to open it."

He clenched his fists, fighting the urge to collapse under the weight of it all. A storm. I'll be the one to unleash it.

But then, something shifted. A flicker of doubt, a sharp pang of realization. He wasn't alone in this. There was something else out there, something watching him. The other players in the game.

Kaelen spun around, his heart racing. In the shadows at the edge of the clearing, he saw them—figures cloaked in darkness, watching him. There were five of them. He didn't need to see their faces to know that they were no mere allies. Their power, their presence, was something Kaelen felt deep in his core.

Solara stepped forward, her expression tense, alert. "The guardians," she muttered. "I should have known they would come now."

One of the figures stepped forward, the others remaining in the shadows. Kaelen could feel their gaze on him, heavy, filled with expectation. This one, unlike the others, was bathed in a strange, ethereal light, their eyes glowing with an unnatural glow. They were not human. Not demon. They were something else entirely.

"The key has arrived," the figure spoke, their voice like a symphony of whispers. "And so, the final phase begins."

Kaelen's stomach twisted, his instincts screaming at him to run, but his feet remained rooted to the ground. "Who are you?" he demanded, his voice shaking, the fire within him flickering in response to the overwhelming presence of these beings.

"We are the ones who have waited," the figure replied, "the ones who will stand beside you when the door opens, to guide you through the dark."

"Guide me?" Kaelen repeated. "Guide me where?"

"To the heart of the power behind the door," the figure said, their eyes narrowing. "Where your destiny will be sealed."

Kaelen's breath caught. The truth was dawning on him with a clarity that left him cold. These figures these guardians weren't here to help. They were here to make sure the door opened. To make sure he stepped into the darkness that awaited beyond.

"You will never be the same once you open that door," the figure warned. "But you've already made the choice, Kaelen. You've already stepped into the game."
