Chapter 9 - Exposed: The Mechanism Revealed

Revian defended against the shin of Garron's leg, the roundhouse kick stopping just short of his head.

Garron pivoted his grounded foot to the left, coiling on the ball of his foot while the outreaching leg tilted down to point toward the floor.

Thwam!

His knee joint violently locked out, his bone snapping past Revian's guard and sending him flying back a few feet.

"What the hell...?"

Revian was desperate for time to recollect, shakily bringing his arms up after Garron was already within feet of him.

Given the speed of Garron's past movements, Revian believed it should've been an easy victory for him after having stolen his fighting style, but his body was moving unnaturally. He ramped into each movement slowly--almost awkwardly--but then dipped into attack with incredible speed.

It was like magic was spring loading his body, giving him strength he didn't possess alone. But that wasn't the only thing that irked Revian.

Garron again convulsed unevenly, his heel on the floor whirling with quadruple the velocity he had before.

His body lifted off from the ground, the rising leg swinging up past his head in the air.

Ramming the same leg into Revian and violently kicking the two arms he'd raised in defense, his spin churned his entire body into Revian's, smoke blazing from the two's point of contact.

While some of the kinetic energy from his spin was maintained, the axe kick Revian received hadn't nearly the same unnatural movements as before, allowing him to both defend and retaliate against it.

Swinging his defending arms, he sent Garron flying, breaking their clash and allowing him a few moments to think.

What could this be? If it were mechanical physics, I could map it, perhaps even predict it, but it's almost--

Not even his thoughts could have time to breathe--Garron was already in a violent back twist.

However, he didn't have nearly the same mind-boggling rapidity, his mass weighing down against the insane velocities he'd shown earlier.

His back was faced toward Revian, his feet pointed up.

The back of his heel slammed into Revian's palm, and the clash allowed him to maintain height in the air.

Slamming three more kicks into him, Garron staggered Revian's guard, his arms thrown back and legs folding in on themselves.

Wham!

With a violent thump, Garron twisted his body in the air perpendicular to the floor to hit Revian in the chest with a flying double side kick.

Air wheezed out of Revian as he flung back onto the floor beneath him.

"Inconsistent," Garron said.

"What?"

"My movements are inconsistent, right? That's what you were thinking."

Garron teetered on his tippy toes, whirling again with the blistering speeds that Revian struggled to track.

"You're wondering how my attacks are getting more and more explosive, right?"

Revian raised his hand in anticipation for a front kick, telegraphed by the tip of Garron's foot slanting down.

Despite this, Garron's leg jolted to the side--Revian getting gut-wrenched by a side kick that seemed to crush the air from his lungs.

"Puhh!" He gasped as he skidded across the ground.

Garron didn't wait--didn't even hesitate--closing the distance with his leg raised again.

Revian's ankles dug into the hard floor, his teeth gritting through the white-hot pangs of pain in his stomach.

This time, Garron's next kick came slower, and Revian snatched it midair without struggle.

"You know, if you keep doing the same thing, this fight will only end in your defeat." Garron grunted.

Revian hadn't intended on falling for his bait--he knew exactly what Garron was trying to do.

Garron shifted forward again, twisting left to generate momentum and break through Revian's guard, but Revian was ready--he let go of Garron's leg at the last second, letting it slam uselessly into the floor.

For a moment, Garron couldn't retract it, his body fighting against the force his magic had created.

Seizing the moment, Revian lunged, his foot driving toward Garron's exposed back.

Fwish!

The kick missed, Garron's torso lurching forward under its own wild momentum--though not with the same sharpness as his earlier one-legged spins.

Finally wrenching his leg free, Garron twisted on his heel, landing a brutal back kick across Revian's jaw.

"Well thought out, but still not enough," he said, watching Revian tumble like a ragdoll toward the wall.

Revian groaned as he crashed, pain surging through his cheek every time his jaw moved.

"Hah… well, I have your ability figured out…" he muttered, pushing himself up just as Garron charged again.

"Oh, do you?"

Garron snapped a kick toward Revian's chest with his right leg, met instantly by an identical kick from Revian's own.

In that moment, he saw it--the way Revian mimicked him. His habits, his pivots, his stance--it was all his own style, turned against him.

"That won't help you!" Garron yelled, again shifting to the balls of his foot.

But Revian caught the motion, breaking contact as he twisted away and launched a sweeping back kick against Garron's side.

Garron whirled violently again, his right leg flying out to intercept Revian's mid-kick, narrowly avoiding the match-ending condition set by Varek.

"Hm, then what about this?" Garron asked, bracing his weight and pushing off the ground with only his heel.

Revian pressed off Garron's extended leg, driving him backward and knocking his balance loose.

Without hesitation, he unleashed a side kick--Garron's eyes widening, his lips flattening to a grim line as sweat streamed from his brow.

"Grrhhhh..." he grunted, his back arching midair as crackles erupted from his spine and pain glazed over his gaze.

The blow knocked him clean from his position, stealing his footing and sending him crashing onto his back.

"Guhhh... how?" he rasped, locking eyes on Revian from where he lay a dozen feet away.

"Your ability--it's rotational force in a single spot," Revian answered, cracking his knuckles with furrowed brows and sharpened resolve.
