Seven months later. Sidon Village, Frozen North.
A large crowd was gathered together at the village square.
There, a group of men can be seen with all sorts of equipment around them. From spears, nets, ropes, and so on; they were prepared with all sorts of equipment. It would seem, from an outside perspective, that they were an expeditionary group.
The men themselves were strong and large. Their overall stature, higher than the normal man, stood mightily with heights exceeding two meters.
Not only that, the villagers that were gathered together had similar heights, even the children looked as if they were as tall as an average grown adult as well. Showcasing their heights was not considered humanly normal.
This village, as well as many others that resided in the Frozen North, were members of the Northern Tribes. A race of giant humans.
Although many can mistake them as giants, the truth was vastly different. They are simply humans with a huge height difference from a normal human and nothing else.
Though giants were known by their exceedingly great strength and monstrous endurance, the Northern Tribes exceeded them in terms of skills in the weapons they hold and how they use their environments to the best of their ability.
Not only that, they were smarter than their gigantic counterparts, as well as having more potential in using the Magic Arts, which led to the Northern Tribes using seals in their everyday lives after their integration to the Amriel Kingdom. Thus making them slightly superior to the magicless giants who only think of themselves with their own strength. Especially when the weapons they hold were enchanted by seals that shifted the balance of power between them.
If they were what they were before the integration, they would be like the giants. Not knowing what magic is and how to use it, they have suffered many problems where only the use of seals, which they did not have access to in the past, can provide.
Now, things were different. Because of it, many members of the Northern Tribes thrived because the introduction of the use of the seals had helped them be able to work on problems that couldn't be solved before. This led to the expansion of a powerful, more resourceful warrior culture similar to the first, but with the use of seals and magic.
For that reason is why the expeditionary group was created. To hunt down monsters that had plagued the Frozen North. The creatures of the Unnatural Order.
In the past, they have attempted such an expedition. However, it had failed time and time again with the lack of magic and seals to aid them. This time, they hoped they would have better success in eliminating the monsters.
For the three years since the integration, they have been training their warriors with enchanted equipment and having Magic Arts users, who were also members of the Northern Tribes, into their ranks. They have been preparing for this moment for several months now, and they have been meticulous in their preparation and training.
This was the moment that they were waiting for.
The expeditionary group, one hundred strong both warriors and Magic Arts users, were ready.
An old man stood on a platform behind the expeditionary group. Though his appearance looked like a wrinkly old man, withered and frail, and may seem that he was about to fall even for his height. But, his voice says otherwise.
"I am thankful that all of you have gathered tonight. It has been wondrous to see able-bodied men like you all to be here. I thank our God for this opportunity that we have."
His booming voice, which belied his ancient appearance, was loud and clear for all to hear.
To the villagers and those from the expeditionary group, it was no surprise that the old man was able to make a voice sound like he was a war general. After all, they revered him as one who commanded respect without even seeking it.
The old man, Gideon, was one of many wise chiefs in the Northern Tribes. The man who the villagers considered as a great leader who led them throughout the years since he began his position as the Village Chief.
"Thank you very much for your support, chief! Without it, this group wouldn't have existed!"
One of the members of the expeditionary group cried out. His voice was genuine and was filled with respect for the old man, and many did have the same emotions as he did.
"You're welcome, my boy. But, remember, it is not I alone that made this possible. It is only through the efforts of this village that made it possible, as well as support with the other villages and fellow chiefs that provided guidance and supply for this group. Without it, this group would not have existed in the first place."
Although he was revered by his people, it goes to show that he was still humble. His age and wisdom were apparent for all to know the sincerity of his words.
"Now, men of the village, Sidon. I wish to say may fortune shine on you, but before you all leave, there is one more individual that will accompany you for this expedition. Who will also fight along with you."
His statement surprised everyone, including those from the expeditionary group, since they knew nothing about what their chief had said. Especially when they have checked that there was no one else that could be left accounted for in this expedition.
Curiosity began to rise among the villagers as well as those from the expeditionary group. All of them were wondering who the person was that would accompany them to fight against the monsters. After all, they knew everyone in the village, and it was nearly impossible that they wouldn't have known such a person.
Now as their imaginations were getting out of hand, from thinking it would be someone from a nearby village or someone who could guide them to where the monsters are or a village chief to fight them and so on, until they heard a voice behind them.
"I'm sorry I'm late!"
It was the voice of a young girl that called out. Everyone turned where her voice was, but they couldn't find her.
"I'm down here."
All of them lowered their heads and saw a red-haired girl, whose height was far below them. Even the children that were with the villagers were surprised to see a girl who was a lot different than them. Her physical stature seemed frail and slender, and it was apparent even with her winter clothes on, but she looked beautiful. Especially with her sapphire blue eyes and crimson red hair that made her stand out even more despite her height.
Although her appearance was a genuine surprise for everyone in the village Sidon, her presence meant something else.
"Chief Gideon, is this the person that would accompany us in this expedition?"
Everyone then turned to the village chief, as if her being in their village was something unexpected and unlikely. Yet, to their astonishment, the old man nodded, confirming their suspicion.
"That is correct. She will accompany you all in this expedition."
His confirmation and the certainty of his answer brought disbelief to all who were present.
"But, Chief Gideon! She is but a child! There's no way we can have her go with us, much less fight with us! We can understand if she was here to guide us, but please, you have to reconsider!"
It wasn't that they couldn't believe she could come with them. They were more concerned about her safety since the very purpose of the expedition was to hunt down monsters. The very thought of bringing the red-haired girl, who is a small child by their standards, was nothing more than a helpless target for the monsters.
More than that, she has no weapon on her person.
"I understand your concerns. It is true that she is a child—"
"Hey!"
"—but her mentor had told me to have the girl accompany you all for this journey. He promised that her presence would be beneficial for the task at hand."
The members of the expeditionary group, as well as the villagers, stared at the girl, attempting to find any evidence of her being special enough to have her join them.
They were aware of her mentor, the black-haired man from the isolated house far from the village. He had made regular visits to Sidon for supplies and offered simple services in carpentry. There were also times the red-haired girl accompanied the man during said visits, but those were oftentimes rare occurrences. It was enough that her presence was brief and unnoticeable to many in the village.
Despite that, there were few in the village that recognized the girl. The girl herself had created an impression on them that they would never forget.
Nonetheless, the men felt compelled to do what he said. Not only because he is the chief of Sidon, but also because what the chief was referring to was also someone they had huge respect for. Although not explicitly mentioned by name.
After all, there was no one else in the Frozen North that had a reputation like the black-haired man. Samuel, the carpenter as they called, had in his disposal.
One of the members of the expeditionary group, who is their leader, approached the girl. His large stature and tall height were apparent, and his stern look gave him an impression of a man who had experienced many battles. Yet, his dark hair was beginning to show its gray lines, displaying that he was beginning to reach his olden years.
However, despite the disparity of body build, he couldn't help but feel there was more to this girl than meets the eye.
"You are fortunate that we are going to allow you to come with us. Before we leave, if I may ask, what is your name?"
"My name is Rosetta. Rosetta Van Eisen."
"I see. It's good that your eyes show that you're determined. Especially what we're up against. I just hope that your confidence isn't a fool's dream in this expedition."
"I understand where you're coming from. I'm not that kind of person… sir... I'm sorry, I don't even know your name."
The man slightly chuckled, seeing there was a form of humility from the girl.
"That's alright, this is the first time we met, so it's natural that you don't know my name yet. Very well, I'm Melekim. Melekim Akbar. It is a pleasure to meet you, Rosetta. And welcome to this group."
"A pleasure to meet you as well, Melekim. I also want to apologize if I had been overbearing in my introduction."
The red-haired girl, Rosetta, as she was now known, gave a respectful bow at the towering man. The sincerity from her words were enough to win over some who heard their conversation.
For Melekim, the way she expresses herself was familiar to him.
Why does she feel like my daughter?
He knew his daughter had a fiery personality, which she inherited from her mother, but oftentimes, when she's feeling a bit humble, she would do the same thing as the red-haired girl in front of him.
It doesn't help when they look so similar… Even the way she reacted to Chief Gideon is also similar…
Melekim decided to ignore what seemed to be uncanny similarities of this red-haired young woman to his own child. After all, his daughter had left the Frozen North to join with the Scholars Organization eight months ago, on the same day as the invasion by the mysterious army. Also, there was no way that she could be related to her at all.
Even then, she has a different hairstyle than hers. So they can't be that similar.
That was the conclusion he could make at the moment before turning towards the village chief, who simply smiled at the man for not belittling this new addition of the group. Or at least that's how he thinks he would've done.
"Chief Gideon, since she's here now, shall this group depart now?"
"Yes, you can, Melekim. I trust in our God that all of you will return from the expedition. Although you may sustain multiple wounds and injuries, I pray that none of your lives are to be taken."
Melekim smiled, having felt the reassurance that their chief had faith that they would succeed this time around. Even those around the group felt that they would find success in their mission.
With that, the expeditionary group immediately departed. With the villagers giving way to the men, leaving them without any fanfare or any kind similar to it.
After all, according to the culture of the Northern Tribes, those departing for battle must feel the gravity of the situation. The seriousness that comes from it for those who are going to fight would feel that they were entrusted with an important task. Any fanfare or the like would diminish such feelings as if it was an easy task that their current mission was not.
This cultural tradition was carried out since the Northern Tribes were formed. Daily life in this region was often risky and full of death, often from fools who ventured out without proper preparation and training; either devoured by monsters or through the Ruakh Lenakaz, it is the same.
As such, there was great solemnity in the village as the group departed. Everyone was aware that the mission that they have was absolutely important.
Thus, the group ventured out, along with the red-haired girl who easily kept pace with them. The girl who defied physical impressions that she was weak but was, in fact, capable of doing things where someone of her likeness would have difficulty.
If one were to consider how fast someone who is more than 2 meters can walk compared to a man around the average height, it is easy to see the difference. But the girl managed to keep pace with them, showing them that she was someone not to look down on, figuratively speaking.
Nonetheless, if she was capable, then there was some form of assurance that she was actually needed. Therefore, they no longer have any doubts about it and went to where they were supposed to go.
The group passed through the snow-filled landscape. Witnessing a world of white and gray, mountains of ice can be seen, with them passing through frozen rivers and lakes that were plain to see.
Yet, despite the snowy world they lived in, the light of day and the clear skies were what gave them hope. A hope that what they were doing would prove beneficial for their village and the Northern Tribes as a whole.
The girl herself was enjoying the scenery, who watched the groups' surroundings with awe and wonder. A sight that captivates the eye at its beauty and wonder.
The men who had seen the red-haired girl's childlike wonder smiled. Her expression reminded them of their children and their younger siblings, and their desire to provide their future became stronger because of it. Reminding them of their mission.
It was that childlike innocence that provided them warmth in the group. It was something they never thought they needed.
After some time had passed, the expeditionary group had finally reached the place where they were supposed to fight.
It was a forest, devoid of leaves of any kind, a place that no one in their right mind would go. It was eerie and full of monsters. Monsters that they need to hunt down.
The forest itself was called "Biniyaan", which is to say "Desolate" according to one of two major dialects spoken by the Northern Tribes.
Although they were proficient in using the two major dialects, the language of the Amriel Kingdom and elsewhere were somewhat difficult to say. But they easily understood what they were saying based on visual context after extended contact with the other civilizations.
For the red-haired girl, Rosetta, it seemed, to them, she was able to speak their language well enough to communicate without any issue. Thus erasing any doubts of language barriers that might've existed, especially when mastering the language can take a significant amount of time for an individual to learn.
As for how the girl was able to speak, they can only guess that she was taught to speak in their language, perhaps from Samuel the Carpenter. That was the only logical thing they had before Melekim began walking in front of the group, turning towards them to give his address.
"Alright, men! We've managed to reach the forest, Biniyaan. As our mission, we will hunt down as many monsters as we can. That way, we will be able to mitigate any spawns from high-level monsters that came from the forest. Monsters that are too much for us to handle."
Everyone in the group nodded, affirming their readiness as they began drawing their weapons, while the Magic Arts users prepared whatever spells they had at their disposal.
The young girl, Rosetta, did nothing but watch them prepare, which caused a few to stare at her as a result.
Melekim also noticed the girl's lack of action as he approached her.
"Hey, Rosetta. I know it may seem odd for you, but why aren't you preparing? If you don't have a weapon, we have a few extra for you to use."
The group's leader wanted to make sure everyone was prepared, especially how dangerous this mission is. Also, considering how strong the monsters can get when devouring an individual's life, he didn't want someone as small as the red-haired girl to lose her life because she isn't prepared.
To his surprise, the girl shook her head.
"Thank you, Melekim. But I don't need a weapon. I already got one."
"...But, I don't see you have one."
"That's true because it's made out of magic. Samuel taught me how to make it when I was with him."
"Really? So, you're a Magic Arts user then."
"I think I am. He said anyone can use magic if they really put their mind to it. It's just how much you can do to make it happen."
Melekim raised his brow at the information. All he knows is that you have to be born to be able to be called a Magic Arts user.
For her to be unsure that she's a Magic Arts user is odd, considering that only they can use magic in the first place. The only thing that comes to mind was that she was trained as a warrior prior to her knowledge as a Magic Arts user, which is unlikely because they would've detected the Reshut energy in her body when she was born.
Even then, he supposed that such ignorance was normal. After all, shortly after the integration, there was mass class segregation in order to determine who among the Northern Tribes are capable of magic or not. That led to some of the warriors possessing the potential of using the Magic Arts despite being trained to use a weapon from their youth.
Perhaps because, in the past, they have no means to know who is a Magic Arts user or not. For that reason, for her to have such ignorance would mean they didn't think to see if she has any potential in magic at all.
Whether or not it was deliberate on their part, he doesn't know. However, at least, for now, the girl is capable of defending herself. Which brought some form of relief for him.
"I see. Well, at least that's good. Also, how many arts can you use, Rosetta?"
"About two, at most."
"Oh? I see that you must be a proficient Magic Arts user. That's great; it's just enough for this mission."
With that conclusion, Melekim no longer had any doubts about the girl's capabilities. If anything, it just ensured the success of the mission itself.
Melekim turned his attention back to the group itself, seeing that they're ready and in top shape. They were fully prepared for the task at hand.
"Remember what all of you had trained for. Let us go and accomplish what our predecessors have not!"
A chorus of shouts erupted from the group, displaying their courage and willingness to fight against the monsters that had plagued their land for many generations.
As the group leader, Melekim led those who were with him into Biniyaan. All of their training and preparations have led them to this moment, where they finally had the chance to fight against the creatures of the unnatural order.
Their steps were loud as they marched inside the forest. Each of them were together in groups of five each, distancing themselves from the other groups so as to not be destroyed in large swathes, but it was close enough that they were within sight and sound to each other.
Rosetta was with the same group as Melekim and four other members of the expeditionary group, with three warriors and three Magic Arts users composing the same group.
Now, silence began to take place, increasing the anxiety and seriousness of their mission. Their steps began to be slow and steady; cautious and watchful of each other. Their senses were heightened to ensure the safety of those around them, as well as on the lookout for monsters that were going to attack them.
After several moments had passed in silence, they sensed movements.
They turned to the direction where they felt something was approaching them. Rather, they felt that a huge number was approaching them in all directions.
The expeditionary group braced themselves for the impending battle. The tension intensified as everyone began preparing for the battle that was upon them.
Trees began to fall in front of them, and the monsters, both great and small, can be seen charging towards them. Their horrendous appearance could make any normal person run away from them; the creatures of the Unnatural Order, who were created from a bygone age, bearing similarities to natural animals, yet possessing demonic features that could make a child fear their very existence.
It was this moment that they were waiting for.
"ATTACK!"
With the loud cry from Melakim, the expeditionary group charged, with speed that matched their large and mighty statures against the monsters.
Both sides clashed, creating a scene of violence. The Northern Tribesmen against the monsters.
From an outside perspective, one can see the overwhelming advantage.
The warriors moved swiftly, striking down the monsters a stroke each, with skills honed through months and years of training. The weapons that they held in their hands were used to the utmost efficiency, holding their ground against the tide of evil that was upon them.
Many of the group fought not only individually but as a group that used every opportunity to cover each other's weaknesses, which provided opportunities to attack.
The Magic Arts users also fought alongside them, using magic to attack and weapons to defend any that came close to them. Magic elements of fire, ice, earth, and many other things were seen in this chaotic clash between man and monsters. Explosions and roars were heard and made in this battle.
The expeditionary group also used the tools they've brought, using nets to restrain the smaller ones into groups and using the Magic Arts users' destructive magics to eliminate them at once. Their enchanted weapons provided them a level of advantage never seen before as they cut down the flesh of monsters, whose bodies were stronger and thicker than normal flesh.
If one were to describe the difficulty of cutting through the monsters' flesh, it would be similar to cutting down a tree using a normal sword. For that reason, no one dared to create an expeditionary group below a thousand. Even then, it wasn't enough to completely ensure success with those kinds of numbers.
With the enchanted weapons on hand, they were able to cut and pierce through them like knives through paper, providing them with an overwhelming advantage they never had before their assimilation to the Amriel Kingdom as a whole.
Soon enough, the large wave of monsters were now fewer than they started. Their numbers had dwindled away in an unexpectedly faster time than what the group thought was possible.
After some time had passed, there were no longer any monsters in the near vicinity to attack them.
"Is everyone alright? Report!"
Melekim turned to the members of the expeditionary group, where he saw that none of them had sustained grievous injuries and deaths. He also saw the red-haired girl was safe as well, seeing there was nothing to worry about. Even though he didn't see her attack any monsters, he can assume that she's done her part.
"We're alright, Melekim! We're a bit scratched, but we're mostly okay."
Melekim let out a sigh of relief at the report. At the same time, he felt that the overall performance of the group was more than enough to deal with the monsters. Moreover, he was happy that everyone was safe and cleared out more monsters than any of the previous attempts by the preceding expeditionary groups could have done.
However, he knew there were still more out there, and this was only a taste of what's going to happen next.
"Everyone, take a break! But don't let your guard down! We only cleared out the lower class of monsters. There's still a middle-class that we need to take care of before we head back to the village!"
As he had said those words, the ground began to shake. Alerting everyone in the expeditionary group and raising their weapons in response to the sudden development.
Although the earthquake wasn't strong enough to make them fall to the ground, it was enough that everyone in the group knew that this wasn't an ordinary earthquake.
"Everyone, look!"
One of them shouted out, pointing at the direction on where they entered the forest.
As all turned and looked, Melekim widened his eyes at what he saw. Including those in the group who had seen the same thing.
"There's a wall?!"
Those words summarized the reaction of the expeditionary group as they witnessed a huge wall appear in the direction of where they had entered the forest. A sense of dread spread over the group at the same time where they saw it.
The wall itself was high, about 35 meters high, and the wall spread over a significant distance where it would take about 27 minutes for the group of Northern Tribesmen to run to cover that distance. With that same distance, it would take an even more significant time for an average human to reach it.
The scene itself was nothing more than terrifying to behold. And they knew only one thing that could make it appear all of a sudden.
"Everyone, go to your positions! We've caught the attention of an Ursa Polaris Major!"
By his command, all of the warriors and Magic Arts users of the group have immediately gone to their positions, preparing their weapons and spells for the threat that is approaching.
According to the myths that were told in the Frozen North and even elsewhere in the world, there were certain monsters that stand above the monsters within the Unnatural Order.
The monsters were categorized in several classes based on how dangerous they are. The monsters the group killed were within the lower class of monsters. The lowest of the low, but they were dangerous for the normal man. Especially when they are strong enough to claw through flesh and thick clothing with ease, and their durability was as strong as their fearsome strength.
Despite their category as the lower-class, there were spheres in each class that designated their danger level. There were 20 levels that were divided by four classes, and these designated classes were the lower class, which encompasses levels 1 to 4; the middle class, which encompasses levels 5 to 10; the upper class, which encompasses levels 11 to 16; and the king class, which encompasses levels 17 to 20. The lowest among them, level 1, was capable of wiping out a house's worth of inhabitants in five minutes.
The monsters that Melekim and the expeditionary group killed were the lower class, around levels 1 to 3, being the most common of the monsters that were seen in the Frozen North. But they were significantly dangerous, especially considering their strength and durability that took the power of magic and seals to even the playing field.
But the Ursa Polaris Major was leagues above the lower class, it being a middle class at level 5. In the middle class, creatures of the Unnatural Order of this class are capable of threatening cities and kingdoms on their own. It was also on the level higher than the ordinary Ursa Polaris, whom the group had the likelihood of beating with their combined strength and magic.
The Ursa Polaris Major, on the other hand, was that same monster that had caused so much destruction in the past and the very reason why the expeditionary group was created. It was that same creature that destroyed the preceding expeditionary forces, numbering in the thousands that were sent by the Northern Tribes, in a matter of minutes.
After they saw a huge wall erected in the distance, it was at that moment they knew it was the work of an Ursa Polaris Major. They were aware that the creatures of the Unnatural Order of that class were capable of using magic on a level higher than the average Magic Arts user can cast. The creation of the huge wall of earth was a testament to the fearsome might of the middle class of the Unnatural Order.
A deafening roar was then heard, increasing the fear that most of the expeditionary group to be higher than it already is. That same roar also made birds, at the distance, fly away in response to the horrifying noise of the monster; only for all of them to be pierced by sharp pillars with uncanny precision, and the number of the flying birds were not few.
With the level of precision that the monster has, it only elevated the danger the group was now facing.
A minute did not pass when the group saw a huge figure jump at a considerably high height at a far away distance, landing in front of the group and creating a huge cloud of snow; shaking the earth as it did so.
As the cloud settled, they saw the monster that they were supposed to hunt down. The Ursa Polaris Major.
Standing above them menacingly was a bear-like creature with white fur, with a height of five meters tall. It was covered in thick steel plates that made it seem it wore a suit of armor, complete with a helmet that fits its bear-like appearance, protecting its vital areas from damage. Its mouth showed off its teeth that looked as if it was sharpened like a weapon. With claws that seemed to extend in and out of its paws.
The appearance of the Ursa Polaris Major more as a warrior of a monster compared to its weaker counterpart, the Ursa Polaris. Its overwhelming presence brought dread and fear as it gave off another deafening roar, solidifying its strength as a powerful monster.
Visibly shaken, Melekim and the rest of the expeditionary group mustered all that they could to hold their weapons as firmly as they could in the face of their current adversary.
There was the monster in front of them, and they were not going to back down; this was the reason why they were here in the first place, to hunt down this beast that caused so much destruction in the past. This very thing was the sole purpose of the expeditionary group to defeat it.
Though the danger was readily apparent before their eyes, the memories of their loved ones flashed before their eyes. Their remembrance of a promise to them began echoing in their minds as they steeled their resolve, casting away all doubt and fear as they prepared themselves for the battle of their lives.
Before Melekim could give out the order to attack, the young red-haired girl walked past the man and approached the creature of the Unnatural Order.
The way she walked was devoid of fear and anxiety. An aura of confidence swept through the expeditionary group as they saw this young girl, whose height and physical build were insignificant compared to their bodies. Yet, she made her stride exuding strength beyond what they have seen themselves.
Then, she began to take off the thick winter clothes that she had, revealing a white dress with long sleeves that reached to her wrists, her skirt reached near her ankles yet it was designed in a way that it wouldn't impede her movements. There were clear, silver lines that traced her sleeves and her dress that gave an impression that the clothing this young woman wore was very expensive.
There, they saw her lift her right arm to her side, her palm opened as she did so, as a sword appeared on that arm. Surprising the group as they saw what was happening.
Next, she held her blade at the Ursa Polaris Major, gripping in a way that those who had years of combat experience could see that she was no mere swordswoman who had started her journey; her posture and the way she confronted the creature in front of her gave off an impression that she was no ordinary girl.
Melekim stared at Rosetta, his eyes widened at the scene as he remembered what she had said before they had entered the forest.
Is this what she meant by already having a weapon?
The leader of the expeditionary group could only guess, but he was more concerned with how someone like her, Rosetta, could exude such stillness in front of a terrifying monster such as the Ursa Polaris Major. Such a thing would've been considered foolishness.
Yet, he did not feel any arrogance or pride in the way she moved, only a firm determination that belied her slender appearance. The way she presented herself against the beast was no foolish decision.
All Melekim could see that this girl was a warrior of mighty strength.
The Ursa Polaris Major made another roar before swinging its huge right arm at the girl, moving at speeds that demonstrated its status as a middle class in the Unnatural Order. Attempting to swipe the girl away with its fearsome strength.
All of those who were witnessing it tried to call out to the girl, some shouting at her to get away and others that were about to release their magical attacks to intercept the Ursa Polaris Major's swipe. It was a moment of chaotic outburst that defined the world around them.
In just one moment, in a blink of an eye, the girl disappeared where she stood.
Then, in the next moment, two undeniable sounds of metal striking metal were heard.
Another moment was when the Ursa Polaris Major fell as if it was struck from behind. The force behind it was strong enough that when the middle class monster hit the ground, the snow beneath it blew away.
So great was the strength that everyone in the expeditionary group could see the cloud of snow explode from where the monster was. The winds made by it can be felt throughout the entire group, who were seeing an unbelievable sight.
As the snow cloud dispersed, they saw the Ursa Polaris Major on the ground. The thick steel plates on its right arm and the helmet it wore had significant dents on it, as if it was struck by a powerful blow.
In a few short seconds, the Ursa Polaris Major, a fearsome monster of the Frozen North, was struck by an unseen force and fell.
It was an extraordinary sight to behold. Moreso, when the red-haired girl reappeared on top of the fallen monster, her small stature gave off an aura that what she did was enough as she looked down on the monster as she stood on its prone form.
Melekim widened his eyes at the young girl, although he was glad that the girl seemed to be unharmed, yet the way she reappeared on top of the monster implied that she did something to it
Was she the one who took it down?
That was the question that popped up in his mind. However, seeing the Ursa Polaris Major on the ground with noticeable dents to its armor and the way the girl presented herself after those short seconds, he could tell she was the one who did all of those things.
If she were the one who dealt those blows to the Ursa Polaris Major, then she must be very strong. But, to be able to do it in such a short time, she must have been moving at speeds far faster than we could track! Is she one of those Pula Adoma?
Melekim was aware that such a thing wasn't uncommon, especially with the history of the Northern Tribes waging war against the Amriel Kingdom before their submission to that nation. There was always a figure in the Kingdom's ranks that defied hundreds, if not thousands, of the warriors of the Frozen North on their own.
Every war, every decisive battle, every moment that could lead to the end of each war, everything; all of it was done by one figure. A figure with red hair and blue eyes, wielding a blade on their hand that struck with such speed that tens and even hundreds of skilled warriors fell by their hand in an instant.
The Pula Adoma was a name given by the Northern Tribes to those warriors who fought on the side of the Amriel Kingdom. With each and every war they waged at the Kingdom has always failed because of the involvement of one Pula Adoma. Who they considered the Kingdom's most powerful warrior in each succeeding generation.
Now, looking at the young girl, Rosetta, Melekim could tell that she is one of the Pula Adoma.
As for how he knew, he had seen one of them prior to the Northern Tribes' integration to the Amriel Kingdom in a war nearly 16 years ago. He could see the resemblance of that man who defeated an army on his own while battling multiple middle-class monsters from the Unnatural Order in the same battle.
It was that same Pula Adoma that saved his life and those who were with him, both Amrielite and Northern Tribesmen. A hero in every sense of the word.
After the integration of the Northern Tribes to the Amriel Kingdom, Melekim sought information regarding the identity of the Pula Adoma from an Amrielite. He soon discovered that their Pula Adoma were called by two names. Master Swordsmen by the nobility of the high echelons of the nation while the common people revered them by the title Sword Saint. Only one family in the Kingdom has a bloodline of both Master Swordsmen and Sword Saints that inherited that fearsome swordsmanship.
The name of the family he discovered was Van Eisen. Descendants of the legendary Sword Saint who defeated the Demon Emperor, ending the Great Demon War 800 years ago.
The Pula Adoma that he knew was a Van Eisen, and many others were also part of that family who were involved in every war the Northern Tribes waged against the Amriel Kingdom. Which meant that all of them possessed red hair and blue eyes, a lineage that constantly possessed those features but with differing personalities; legendary warriors whom the Northern Tribes of the Frozen North feared were successors of the Van Eisen name.
Melekim could see the resemblance of that man in that girl.
Could it be that Pula Adoma was her father?
There was no mistaking it. She has to be related to the man. If she was born before the war, it would've made sense because there was no other Pula Adoma or Sword Saint in the Amriel Kingdom than the one who held the Van Eisen name who saved him on that fateful day.
He heard from the rumors that the wife of the Pula Adoma was a Magic Arts user with the appearance of a twelve year old child, and there was no one else but the Pula Adoma would dare to marry an individual with such childlike appearance. He remembered that woman's name to be Juvia, the wife of the Pula Adoma that fought in that battle; the battle that he could testify was a day never to be forgotten.
Although it is said that there was also another woman whom the Sword Saint impregnated, however, Melekim doesn't have any concrete evidence that such a thing had happened.
After all, he couldn't believe that someone as heroic who saved him would do such a thing. He had seen with his own eyes that there was no such malicious or evil intent that man presented himself. All that he had in him was a man of justice who walked in the ways of righteousness. There was no way someone like him would possess qualities of a true hero that would do such a malevolent thing.
Melekim felt there were factors involved that forced the man, the Pula Adoma, into such a situation. It was the only plausible thing that Melekim could think of to disprove that the Master Swordsman did such evil to the oath of marriage.
His thoughts were soon interrupted when he noticed the Ursa Polaris Major began moving its seemingly unconscious prone state. Surprising the rest of the expeditionary group to see the monster was still alive.
"Oh, it's still alive. I think it should be expected since I only knocked it down. Even then, its armor is a lot stronger than I thought it would be."
The girl was the least bit surprised by the development. Knowing the blows she put into it only made dents to its armor; not necessarily meaning that she killed it. Monsters in the middle-class are a lot harder to kill compared to the lower-class since they have better defenses and pain tolerance.
Rosetta jumped out away from the Ursa Polaris Major, and as she did so, she made a considerable distance until landing in front of the expeditionary group while facing towards the monster. Retaining the aura she had earlier.
As the monster rose, it let out a growl that showed its current emotion, focusing towards the young girl as it readied itself for another attack. Ignoring the warriors of the Northern Tribes behind her as it put its entire attention at the small being that did considerable damage to it.
Without wasting another moment, the Ursa Polaris Major charged at the girl. But, this time, it wouldn't underestimate the girl once more, putting more effort and energy into its current goal. To kill the red-haired child.
The beast raised its left arm, attempting to swipe the girl away using far superior strength and speed that it used before, only to be foiled as the girl ducked and began moving at speeds not too dissimilar to what she did.
The Ursa Polaris Major reacted with a follow-up swipe from its right arm, aiming at precisely the moment she dodged its first attack. Only to have its strike parried by the girl, which resulted in the monster recoiling from the strength of the girl that belied her small body.
Not wanting to lose its momentum, it attacks once more with his mouth, missing the girl as she jumps into the air.
Rosetta, on the air, has the opportunity to attack the monster.
Before she could make what seemed to be her finishing blow, a pillar of earth erupted near the Ursa Polaris Major. Extending and curving it in order to hit the young girl before she slashed the earth pillar. But, it did not end there.
Since the pillar itself is made of rocks, transmuted from soil and any earthly material, it became clear that the Ursa Polaris Major wasn't satisfied with just using the right amount to hit. It used whatever was available to create a seemingly never-ending earth pillar attack that continues on.
Rosetta herself, however, continued slashing away the earth pillar with speeds as fast as it extended. Her arms blurred as she hacked away the attack with such speed that those witnessing it awed out of fear and respect as she did what most Northern Tribesmen couldn't do.
But the Ursa Polaris Major wasn't done yet.
As Rosetta was still in the air, the monster used it as an opportunity to create another earth pillar. This time, the middle-class monster was now involving itself in the attack.
Noticing the incoming earth pillar, Rosetta stopped her slashes. Her hands reached the closest earth pillar as she raised her arm, grabbed a part of it, and used it within milliseconds to pull herself up before the newly conjured second earth pillar made contact with her.
She used enough force to propel herself further into the air, providing her a view of the world below, and she was high enough that she was above the trees. Looking down at the Ursa Polaris Major from the air, with said monster growling at her with much greater intensity than it was before.
Then, the monster put its arm below, as if it was going to lift something. When it did so, earth spikes rose rapidly from the ground, and innumerable amounts of it were produced. Surprising some of the members who were watching from afar.
Much like it was lifting, the Ursa Polaris Major roared as it raised its arms up into the air with speeds belied its heavy arms.
With it, the earth spikes shot out of the ground as if propelled by an unseen force, aiming towards the red-haired girl in the air. With speeds that would be considered instantaneous to the average man as the innumerable earth spikes traveled in velocities that can break the sound barrier with ease.
Though it may seem that the girl is completely vulnerable in the air, especially with her seemingly hopeless state, she did, however, give a confident smile as she held her blade for an overhead slash.
"Wind Art: Air Blade!"
She swung her blade, coating it with the powers of the wind, creating an invisible blade made of concentrated air and released at the incoming earth spikes. Blowing them away as they made contact with the magical attack.
The Ursa Polaris Major barely moved to the side before the Air Blade could hit it. The attack then made contact with the ground, exploding it in a cloud of dust and snow.
As the cloud settled, it was revealed that the attack was far more devastating. There was a chasm of considerable size, stretching about 85 meters long and 7 meters deep, and the gap itself was as wide as Rosetta's blade.
Everyone in the expeditionary group went agape as they saw the blatant display of power the girl, whom they ultimately decided to come with them, had created. Surpassing anything they have seen thus far.
Melekim was nothing different than the rest of the group. He was on the same level of surprise as them, but his mind processed it differently.
I knew it! She's definitely a Pula Adoma, the same as that man from 16 years ago!
Although the feats she displayed pale in comparison to what he had seen the Pula Adoma did years prior. He could not deny that this is a Pula Adoma, or Sword Saint, in the making. And he was witnessing it with his own eyes in this present time.
The way he had seen her adapt to fight the Ursa Polaris Major was proof that she is a Van Eisen. There's nothing else that could deny the fact that the way a Pula Adoma fights is not with brute force; it's to show themselves that they could counter with creativity and grace without being bound by the rigid force of combat. Without limiting themselves into physical attacks solely.
He remembered that the Pula Adoma he met used Ice Arts to create mountains of ice and freezing wind on that fateful day. Turning the tides of that decisive battle in his own terms and liking while retaining the qualities of a true hero.
He was seeing that same quality in that girl, fighting with strength surpassing hundreds while controlling the powers of the Magic Arts that defined the world. Yet, she displayed no overbearance in attitude, rather a confidence that speaks of her ability to perform that would be considered by some as impossible.
Melekim saw the young girl dropping from the sky and landing on her feet with skill and grace that showed no detriment to herself that each audible tap she made with her boots made contact on the clear ground devoid of snow. Standing opposite of the chasm she made between her and the Ursa Polaris Major.
The leader of the expeditionary group was positive that the girl, Rosetta Van Eisen, would be able to fight the monster on her own.
Yet, he couldn't shake off the feeling that there was more to the Ursa Polaris Major's arsenal than meets the eye. He felt there was more to it than what the monster currently displayed.
Currently, there was a tense standoff between the two.
The girl stood with confident defiance. Her small body was a stark contrast to the tall and mighty figure before her. Yet, she was able to hold her ground, even overpowering, against the middle-class monster of the Unnatural Order. While said monster growled at her, its gaze intensified at his opponent, showing its displeasure at the individual who had managed to push it to its limits.
The Ursa Polaris Major, without looking away from the young girl, moved its right arm just below its side with its paw open as it did so.
Although it may seem like an odd move, even for a monster like it, Melekim and a few others were aware that what it's doing is not made out of instinct.
Then, everyone noticed an object made of stone began to rise off the ground where the Ursa Polaris Major's paw was. Surprising the majority while Rosetta and Melekim watched with anticipation as the object began to form into the shape of a sword, not too dissimilar from the longswords used by Rosetta and the Northern Tribes, with the overall length was about four and a half meters long including the hilt.
As it finished forming the object, the Ursa Polaris Major grabbed it by the hilt, exploding the exterior features of the rock-like imitation of a blade. Initiating a transformation; a transmutation of earth into a different material.
After a second had passed since it occurred, the object, which had been an earthy imitation of man's weapon, had transformed into a blade of actual steel material of magnificent quality. With its dimensions and features scaled to match the size of the Ursa Polaris Major, even the weight itself was heavy enough that only the monster itself could hold it in one paw. The blade itself looked sharper than the ordinary longswords produced by any average blacksmiths complete with ornate designs that made it seem like it was an object of great importance.
Then, the monster positioned itself into a stance, with both of its paws holding the newly created blade diagonally by its right side, with its body and posture adjusted to meet with the necessities of such a stance.
Just by this act alone, the Ursa Polaris Major looked more akin to an experienced warrior than a mindless monster.
Silence dawned over the battlefield, the spectators, the expeditionary group as a whole, watched with great anticipation. They felt the quiet but strong impression that this battle would be on a whole other level than it was before.
A minute had passed since the Ursa Polaris Major took a stance, and not a moment after, it moved.
Moving with sudden speed that defied its large stature, the Ursa Polaris Major closed in the distance between it and Rosetta nearly instantaneously. The blade it held was swung from the right, aiming to hit the young girl's small frame.
The girl blocked the middle-class monster's attack with her own swing. Once both weapons made contact against each other, a loud clash of steel exploded from their blows, echoing throughout the forest with shockwaves blowing all sides around the combatants. Those who saw the clash felt the shockwaves as though a strong gust of wind appeared all of a sudden.
The Ursa Polaris Major growled at the girl for stopping its attacks, swinging its sword once more. Striking with fury as it unleashes a flurry of blows as fast as it can muster.
But the girl kept pace with the beast, striking and countering at the same speed as the monster. Her small frame possessed strength that defied her appearance as she fought the middle-class monster with precision and grace.
The Ursa Polaris Major continued on with its onslaught, using whatever options it may have against the girl. Performing maneuvers that only experienced warriors can use as it uses any opportunity to do so, moving around the battlefield that leverages its beastly appeal as it swings its sword, swipes with its paws, and snatch with its jaws. With the young girl swiftly dodging all of those attacks.
It is not all, the Ursa Polaris Major pressed on using the power of the earth, conjuring pillars to strike at the blind sides, shooting earth spikes from the pillars as a rain of projectiles aimed at the girl in speeds not too dissimilar to its attempt on hitting the girl when she was airborne earlier in the battle.
If that wasn't enough to satisfy the beast's desire to kill its opponent, it performed a series of stunts that showed that its agility wasn't hindered by the weight of the armor as it did to showcase that it had the means to use unorthodox tactics in order to disorient its opponent.
Yet, the red-haired child was able to outmaneuver all of those attacks, parrying some and countering some while retaining the confidence she exuded all throughout.
She did not receive any damage or hit in the entire exchange.
As she did all of that, a strong impression waved over the group as one collective thought entered into their minds as they watched the battle between Rosetta and the Ursa Polaris Major.
She's dancing…
Indeed, she was. She was skillfully moved through all of the chaos while locked in the combat against the monster that decimated the previous expeditionary groups before them. Her strikes were precise, deadly even, and her footwork in all of these to perform such an extravagant way of fighting with a sword was captivatingly beautiful.
This was, in essence, a legendary battle.
After Rosetta parried the Ursa Polaris Major's right swing slash, the beast began to move a few steps back. As it did so, the growling intensified, giving a look that conveyed its struggles. Yet, the monster did not seem to act impulsively, its eyes locked on the young girl.
Beneath that stare seemed to be a begrudging acceptance of its opponent's capability to be able to fight and overpower it without taking a single bit of damage. Soon enough, the growling stopped suddenly. Silence began to take in its stead as the Ursa Polaris Major stood motionlessly, the blade still held in its paw as it looked down on the girl with its towering stature.
The warriors of the Northern Tribes watched with tense anticipation as they saw what was unfolding before them. No one dared to make a single move. Otherwise, it would end in a way that would not be pleasing. After all, they have seen what the Ursa Polaris Major can do throughout the exchange between it and Rosetta. They weren't foolish enough to act without reason.
A few moments passed what it seemed like it had gone on for eternity, the Ursa Polaris Major shifted its grip on its sword, holding it in a reverse grip. After that, the middle-class monster approached the girl slowly, walking towards her.
There was no malice in its expression, only contempt and begrudging agreement as it went closer to the girl.
Rosetta herself still has the confidence she had, but the Ursa Polaris Major's action to move towards her made her raise a brow. Yet, it seemed to her that it wasn't going to attack her anymore.
As the Ursa Polaris Major was close enough, it lowered the paw that was holding its sword and placed it in front of the red-haired girl, as if offering the blade to her.
Everyone in the group widened their eyes at the scene, not knowing what to believe about what they were seeing. But they durst not make a move as they cautiously watch the exchange between it and the girl.
"...Are you surrendering your blade?"
They heard the young girl ask, her tone filled with genuine, curious intent as she looked at the beast with no fear but with eyes wanting to understand its reason.
The Ursa Polaris Major did not answer as it stood still with the blade still on its paw.
"...You can understand what I am saying, but you can't talk, can you?"
The beast continued to stand still, but there was a slight, hesitant nod of its head at the girl.
"I see… very well, I shall take it as a token of peace then."
Rosetta grabbed the sword from the Ursa Polaris Major, lifting the huge four and a half meter long longsword with one hand. Effortlessly showcasing her exceptional strength as she held it as though it was light as a feather.
After that, the Ursa Polaris Major began to walk away from the girl, there was no longer any reason for it to stay within her presence; of one who could fight without taking any form of damage any longer.
With a wave of its paw, the pillars and the spikes it created crumbled to dust and soil, leaving no evidence of the battle earlier. The large wall, the same 35-meter tall wall that appeared earlier, was now destroyed, and a pile of earth replaced its place.
The only thing that the Ursa Polaris Major created that didn't turn into dust was the sword that it gave to Rosetta.
After doing its deconstruction, the Ursa Polaris Major put both of its paws together and clapped, then placed both of its paws on the ground.
Then, multiple earth spires, too many to count, erupted throughout the forest Biniyaan.
Everyone can see that each of the spires it created there had at least five or so lower-class monsters pierced by the spikes the Ursa Polaris Major created from the spires, impaling them in a way that no one could assume that any of them would survive from. All of them disintegrated into black vapors.
Soon after the earth spires appeared, it was then turned to dust and soil the next moment.
With that, the Ursa Polaris Major left without any further action. Taking no heed on the reactions of those who were watching as it went away, walking on all fours as a normal bear would do. As it disappeared into the shadows of the trees until everyone could no longer see it.
The expeditionary group breathed out a sigh of relief as the Ursa Polaris Major, the most dangerous creature they have encountered thus far and the same thing they were tasked to eliminate, was now gone.
Melekim was still staring where the middle-class monster disappeared to; it wasn't anything related to cautiousness, but his stare was more akin of curiosity.
"The way it gave away its sword… it feels… familiar…"
The words of that man, the Pula Adoma, echoed in his mind.
I command you by all the desires which you all have for life, that all of you deliver up your weapons of war unto us, and we will seek not your blood, but we will spare your lives, if you will go your way and come not again to war against us.
He remembered a scene, a scene where Amrielite, Northern Tribesmen, and the remainder of the middle-class monsters whom that man, the Pula Adoma; the Sword Saint declared from that fateful day. It was that day that man shook the foundations of disbelief between man and monster, Amrielite and Northern Tribesmen; establishing himself a force that would not be forgotten.
Could it be that the Ursa Polaris Major was present that day?
Melekim was sure it was possible. He remembered a lone Ursa Polaris, the lesser creature of the monster the girl fought, was present. It was the only lower-class of the monsters of the Unnatural Order that were there when that man called for peace in the presence of the other middle-class monsters.
If it is that same creature, it sure has grown into a terrifying being.
The leader of the expeditionary group mused. After all, it has been a good 16 years since it happened. The words of the Sword Saint were still fresh in his mind, as well as others who were present that day.
He was aware that the monsters, the creatures of the Unnatural Order, can grow more powerful the older they get, hence the reason why eliminating the monsters not only means to disrupt the idea of rapid spawning, it's to mitigate the process of creating powerful monsters that would be too many to handle.
The prime example of such an evolution was the Ursa Polaris growing into an Ursa Polaris Major. Level 4 to Level 5.
However, what he did not expect was the intelligence that comes from such an evolution.
I remember now, it is that Ursa Polaris from 16 years ago is the same Ursa Polaris Major that girl fought earlier. It's gotten a lot smarter and more powerful since then, just like a kid becoming a warrior.
The man chuckled, realizing that there was more to the monsters than meets the eye.
His musings were interrupted when he noticed one of the members of the expeditionary group approached him.
"What is it now?"
"Nothing, Melekim. I was wondering what we're going to do now, especially when the Ursa Polaris Major threat is now gone."
The leader simply gave a smile at the warrior, showing there was nothing else to worry about.
"We'll head back to Sidon Village. There's nothing that we can do here."
"What about the monster the girl drove off? What are we going to do with it?"
"Leave it alone. That thing is smart enough to know that any further conflict would only risk its life. Besides, we now have a bright idea of how dangerous middle-class monsters are, both in combat and in intelligence; even if it's a Level 5 monster. Also, we can use this battle as a way to prepare ourselves for another monster that is on the same level as the Ursa Polaris Major or perhaps even greater. It's better for us to report this so that we can make a strategy in case something like this happens again."
The warrior nodded, understanding that it is best for them to do so in their current situation.
Besides—
Melekim stared at the girl, who was holding the Ursa Polaris Major's blade effortlessly with one hand. The breeze softly brushed her figure as her dress flapped in a calm manner.
—We have a legend in the making with us… someone with potential for the greater good.
The shadow of the man, the Sword Saint in Melekim's memory, appeared beside the girl. His figure was still vivid in his mind.
The only difference between the Pula Adoma and the young girl in front of the leader was that the man wore a black coat; a contrast to the girl's white dress. As well as the differing blades both used in their way of fighting.
He remembered a one-edged blade, a blade that has that distinctive pronounced curve near the end of the tip, with markings that set it apart from the normal swords used by the Amriel Kingdom. It was a blade of foreign origin, a sword of great price.
Though the young girl's longsword was practical with its two-edged blade, but, in comparison to the sword that man used, he felt it was lacking.
If there was one thing that all Pula Adoma held in common, according to the testimonies and traditions of those who had seen those legendary warriors; they who passed down this oral tradition, have the same one-edged blade.
Melekim could tell that girl had a long way to go before she could be the Pula Adoma; the Sword Saint of her generation.
With that thought lingered still in his mind, he gave a pleasant smile as he left where he stood. Calling the others to depart.
XXX
Rosetta watched the expeditionary group march back towards the village Sidon, carrying the large sword created by the Ursa Polaris Major and marching alongside them as she was deep in thought.
I managed to win against the Ursa Polaris Major, but it surrendered before I was able to go all-out against it.
She was dominating the battle. She was overpowering it with sheer skill and magic. Her strength was more than enough to outmatch the monster's strength despite its towering size. She was winning.
Yet, the way it gave up its sword to her was nothing she had expected.
She felt from the beast that it no longer had the desire to keep on fighting. She could feel that it knew it had no chance of winning against her, and it troubled her.
All she saw from it was not a beast, but a warrior who knew the struggle was not worth the price.
I wasn't able to cut through its armor. Not only that, its flesh was actually a lot stronger than its actual armor.
When she had countered the Ursa Polaris Major's blows and got good hits to it, she wasn't able to slash through even the surface level of its skin. Not a fur was shaved off, and she was strong enough to cut through normal steel on her own.
She was aware that some monsters of the Unnatural Order used armor as added protection, but it was mostly decorational as their actual skins were far more durable than what they wore. It was evident from the fact that its armor alone was stronger than the actual steel plates produced by well-known blacksmiths.
Rosetta Van Eisen looked at the four and a half meter long sword the beast used. Her thoughts wandered deeper into her mind.
If I had a weapon that was heavy and bigger to do some damage. Not only that, maybe a weapon so light that can pierce through armor would also be good.
The sword she used was a balance between the two damage dealing types, but it felt lacking.
At first, she thought that a longsword would be enough. However, after the encounter with the Ursa Polaris Major, Rosetta knew she had to step up her game.
After training with Samuel, she knew she had gotten stronger since she first started. But, there were many things she had to learn for her to fully utilize the power she held. Even then, there was still something that she had to discover, especially with her magic.
She wasn't aware that she was capable of using magic, she thought that only Magic Arts users are able to use it; she thought she was a Weapon Arts user considering the fact that she has physical strength to be considered as one.
After all, those who are Magic Arts users are those who have the concentration to conjure the Art they are using, whereas the Weapon Arts users are those who have to be aware of their surroundings and use their physical prowess in combat.
For her to be able to have an aptitude for magic was something that goes beyond her understanding.
What's even more surprising is that Samuel was also capable of using magic. Which is odd considering that he had an aura of a warrior; not someone who is capable of using magic yet proficient in a way that defies her current understanding of how the world operates.
As Samuel was a warrior who was aware of his environment, he also had the mind to concentrate the power of magic at the same time; a dual wielder, a hybrid of different schools of combat. And yet, he was able to create a harmonious usage of both schools, creating a perfect synergy that defies the idea of a rigid combat system where both are incompatible with each other.
Because of how her mentor was able to do it, she was able to learn it from him and harness the power in her.
Then, the words of Samuel came to her mind.
"It is true that magic is a separate power that one who is qualified can use; the same is also applicable to those who use a weapon. However, there is a law. Yea, there is a law given; and unto every law, there are certain bounds and conditions. All beings who abide not in those conditions are not justified, but to those who do receiveth a higher law. A law that transcends them from their restriction to gain power and authority for their works compared to those who transgress this law. It is by this law that I am able to use both magic and wield a weapon; the same shall be given to thee as well, and there are a great many who abideth the same law as I do. Wherefore, it is expedient that you must not transgress this law. Otherwise, you would be the same as those who knew no such law."
"...I wonder what he meant by that… conditions that need to be followed, but what?"
She didn't know there were conditions that allowed people to use both magic and weapons at the same time, but the only thing she could be sure of is that it allowed them to be very powerful.
Regardless of the implications, she had gotten a lot stronger in the seven months that she's been with her mentor. She could feel she had already surpassed her brother in terms of strength, and most likely, even the magical aspects.
But, she could not shake off the doubts of her heart.
If Zed had the same opportunity as I did, he'd probably be a lot better than me.
Her growth in strength and magic was only possible through Samuel, but, in comparison to her brother, he had been training on his own.
During the months under Samuel, she had pondered deeply on what Zedekiah did during his training, wondering if it was similar to what she had gone through or in a different way.
In the two and a half hours when she and Zedekiah had that sparring session, it was apparent that her older brother was no stranger to combat.
His skill with the blade suggests experience, movements that tried and tested his body to the limits. She saw in his eyes that he had seen through her attacks, constantly analyzing and making plans several steps ahead. The way he presented himself, even in the midst of combat, was a warrior who knew what he was doing. His strikes were precise and calculated, considering every force that was put into it was enough to allow him to maneuver in case of counterattacks.
Then, there was an aura Zedekiah carried. It wasn't an aura of someone who simply studied; it was one who had lived the art of war. The art of war complimented the mind of a strategist and a warrior.
If she were to interpret the "law" Samuel mentioned about using magic and weapons at the same time, she would see that the "law" was applicable to the mind of a strategist and the body of a battle-fought warrior as well. Her brother exemplified through his works, complimenting the dual aspect of his heritage.
Rosetta can see it in herself that she was no strategist.
Although she had natural talent with the sword and an aptitude for magic, she felt it would be no use to someone who can plan things ahead and act on it with the physical strength that presented that same opportunity.
If her brother, Zedekiah, had an aptitude for magic, he could use his strategic mind, his warrior body, and the power of magic to be an extremely formidable warrior. A very effective one; effective in a way that she could only imagine, would be very terrifying.
Zed, if things had gone differently, would you be in the same place as I am?
The young girl's eyes softened as she released a sigh. Not knowing what to think about, the memories of her older brother wasn't something she could forget so easily.
Her eyes then caught something in the distance, near the front of the expeditionary group that was ahead. A familiar black-haired man.
"Is that Samuel?"
It would seem to be. Especially when there's no one else that she knew would wear a black cloak with clothes that are also dark but with white lines spreading throughout the attire. And he was talking to Melekim, who was there as the group continued their march.
Rosetta, wanting to know why her mentor is here, ran towards them. Passing through the group with ease.
"Samuel!"
Noticing the girl's cry, the black-haired man, Samuel, turned his head toward the girl and smiled. The usual smile that she had seen him do throughout the time she was with him.
"Rosetta. It seems that you're alright. How's your experience with the expedition?"
The girl stopped in her tracks as she looked at her mentor with a smile.
"Oh, it went well, Samuel. No one died, but some got injured, but they're alright. I fought an Ursa Polaris Major and made it surrender."
"I see… Well, I suppose Melekim would tell me the whole story about it."
"Come on! I know I'm bad at recalling things in great detail, but that's what happened! Really!"
"We've already talked about this, Rosetta. If it is just your experience, I believe you. But, since the expedition involved more than a hundred people, I want to hear it in greater clarity. However, that doesn't mean what you said is worthless, I just want to know what exactly happened."
Rosetta pouted at Samuel's response, which only earned a chuckle from the black-haired man. Melekim stared in confusion at what had just occurred and also tried to figure out what they've been saying since they were talking in a different language.
"...Fine. I just want to tell you what I said is true."
"Then, I believe you, Rosetta. You did a great job in helping drive off the Ursa Polaris Major."
"Oh, it's nothing…"
The young girl looked away, flustered. She was evidently pleased with what her mentor had said.
From an outside perspective, it might seem odd that two individuals would talk in a way that would imply that they are family members, which was the case for Melekim as the scene unfolded, but it felt something odd to say the least.
Other than that, it was a generally good sight to behold after what had happened earlier.
If one were to consider their height differences, one could mistake the man as her father or older brother based on their interactions alone.
Regardless of whatever implications it may have, it is clear that both of them have a close bond with each other.
"Kahit hindi ako alam kung talaga magkapamilya sila, pero ayos na man sa akin." (Even if I don't know if they're related at all, but that's fine with me.)
They overheard Melekim speak. It was in one of the two major dialects of the Northern Tribes, and both of them understood what he meant.
"Pasensya na po, Melekim. Ito talaga ang aming pagsasalita sa isa't isa. Pero, alam ko na nalito po kayo dahil sa amin." (I'm sorry about that, Melekim. This is how we talk to each other. But, I know how confused you are because of us.)
"Wag kang mag alala, Samuel. Naintindihan ko yan ang wika sa mga Amrielita at ito din kung saan nanggaling si Rosetta." (Don't worry about it, Samuel. I understand that's the language of the Amrielites and also where Rosetta came from.)
"Ganun ba? Salamat po, Melekim." (Is that so? Thank you, Melekim.)
"Ayos na naman. Sige, babalik tayo sa napag-usapan natin kanina, Samuel. Sinasabi mo tungkol sa nangyayari sa digmaan, anong pinakabagong balita?" (That's alright. Yes, let's go back to what you said earlier, Samuel. You said something about what's happening in the war, what's the latest news?)
Rosetta saw Samuel's face hardened. She could feel it was an important topic, especially when it was related to the ongoing conflict with the invaders. She, herself, felt that she needed to hear it as well since she was affected by the same conflict that led her to the Frozen North in the first place.
"Sinabi nila na nagkaroon napakaraming kamatayan dahil sa pinagbago ng pagtatangka na ikunin ang nawalang teritoryo, ang teritoryo kung saan nanggaling ang Margrave Eisen Land. Na binanggit din na hindi matagumpay ang ginawa nila at nagkaroon ng sobrang maraming mga sakripisyo sa operasyon na ginawa nila" (They said that there were too many deaths due to the renewed attempt to reclaim the lost territory, the territory from which the Margrave Eisen Land came from. They also mentioned that their efforts were unsuccessful and that there were too many sacrifices in the operation that they had done.)
When Rosetta heard that, she unconsciously formed her hands into a fist. The memories of the night of the invasion flashed in her mind.
"Ganun ba… salamat sa pagbabahagi sa balita, Samuel. Pero, meron pa ba maliban sa nabinanggit niyo?" (Is that so... Thanks for sharing the news, Samuel. But, is there anything else besides what you mentioned?)
"Oo, meron pa po. Sinabi nila na merong balak ang kaharian ng Amriel na susubukin nila ang pangangalap ng mga Northern Tribes sa hukbo. Oo, sinabi nila para magpuno sa mga nawalang sundalo dahil sa digmaan at magkaroon din silang pagbabagong kalakasan mula ito." (Yes, there is more. They said that the Amriel Kingdom has a plan that they will try to recruit the Northern Tribes into the army. Yes, they said to replace the soldiers lost due to the war and also to have a renewed strength from it.)
"Tsk!"
Melekim clicked his tongue. His overall mood was nothing pleasant at the mention of the Northern Tribes, knowing it would be a difficult thing.
(I know my people are not ready for this, especially after joining the Amriel Kingdom three years ago; and only the youth are left with us now due to the many deaths caused by the Ursa Polaris Major. However, since we successfully drove out that monster, with the help of Rosetta, we can do what the Amrielites want. However, it is still difficult due to the latest events that have occurred today.)
"Naintindihan ko po, Melekim. Gayunpaman, ito ang balita narinig ko mula sa Barangay Sidon, at yan ang alam ko bago naparito ako sa iyong pangkat." (I understand, Melekim. However, this is the news I heard from Sidon Village, and that's what I knew before I came to your group.)
"Ganun ba? Sige, iisipin ko muna ng mga bagay na binanggit mo, Samuel. Pero, yung kasama po natin…" (Is that so? Alright, I'll think about the things you mentioned, Samuel. But, the one with us…)
Sensing what the leader of the expeditionary group was referring to, Samuel turned to his young student, who was shaking.
He knew it was not from the cold, but, rather, it was from something that had occurred in the past.
"Rosetta. I know what you're thinking, but please, you have to consider. You're not fit to go, yet."
The man can see the girl trembling. It was apparent that what was going on in her mind was plain to see. Especially considering that he, as her mentor, knew what it meant for the girl.
"What do you mean? Can't you see what's going on? People are dying, Samuel! I need to go back and fight the enemy!"
Rosetta had spent countless nights experiencing the nightmares of not being able to help those she loved. She had felt that she was useless at the time and wanted to change all of that. After hearing the news about the war, it ignited her desire to change and use what she had learned from her training to fight against the invaders that attacked her homeland.
After the battle against the Ursa Polaris Major, the young girl felt that she was ready. Ready to fight against those who had taken her land and killed many innocent people. She was no longer the weak girl that she was before.
However, her mentor disagreed with such notions.
"You are strong, Rosetta. I know you are, but the enemy is much more powerful. In a way that would defy your understanding. In light of that, I forbid you to go."
"Why?! Why do you think I'm not ready?! I can handle them like I handled the Ursa Polaris Major that I fought!"
Even though she only drove it away, her physical strength she displayed in that battle was undeniable. She was able to overpower the middle-class monster with her strength, and she was confident that she could fight the enemy on the level that she is now.
Samuel stared at her eyes. His gaze was intense; so much so Rosetta flinched.
He stared at her for a good moment that felt like it was forever. Then, the man began to speak. His voice was filled with strength that defied his calm demeanor.
"Thou art not yet ready. To return to the land from whence thou camest, I forbid thee. The enemy who taketh thine homeland is far superior than thou thinkest of him. For behold, what he now uses, doth not exist before. What thou thinkest its origin is, thou shalt not know. It is wisdom in me to warn thee of this thing before the pride in thine heart shall overtake thee. Be thou, therefore, humble, Rosetta. It is wisdom thou wilt know for thyself of these things. In time, thou shalt know of things sure to come. What you have now, shall new things be added unto thee. Though thou thinkest of thyself as weak, thou art made stronger than what thou believest. Thou mayest leave this land to where thou wast raised, it is thine own choice. Be ready, for that time must surely come."
"..."
Rosetta was silent after what she had heard from Samuel. The man then left without saying another word towards the direction opposite of the group.
To where he wants to go, Rosetta doesn't know. But, in her mind, her desire to go back to her homeland remained strong.
It wasn't that she didn't pay attention to what he said. It was something akin to an option; a choice that she has to make.
The choice she was going to make was obvious, and there was nothing that could deter her from doing so.
Before she could leave, Melekim stared at her. His tall figure was looking down on her as if he was contemplating. So much so, Rosetta had the impression that she had to talk to the leader.
"Pasensya na po, Melekim. Pero, meron akong kailangan gawin at wala akong oras na makipag-usap sa iyo." (I'm sorry about that, Melekim. But, I have something to do and I don't have time to talk about it to you.)
"...Naiintindihan ko ang ibig mong sabihin, Rosetta. Pero, meron akong tanong para sa iyo." (...I understand what you mean, Rosetta. But, I have a question for you.)
"Ano ba yan, Melekim?" (What is it then, Melekim?)
"Taga sa Margrave Eisen Land ka ba, tama?" (You're from the Margrave Eisen Land, correct?)
"Opo, tama… Bakit po?" (Yes, that's correct… why?)
Melekim smiled at the answer as he pulled an object out of his pocket, revealing it to be a paper folded neatly in a way that wouldn't crumple in his clothes.
"Ito, hawakin mo, Rosetta. Para sa iyo." (Here, hold this, Rosetta. It's for you.)
He handed the piece of paper to the young girl, his large arm outstretched as he offered it. The girl was slightly confused as to why he was doing this. Nonetheless, she accepted his offer.
She unfolded the paper until the contents were revealed in a way that surprised her.
"Ito po ay…" (This is…)
"Isang mapa… Isang mapa kung saan pwede pumunta sa Margrave Eisen Land." (A map… a map where you can go to the Margrave Eisen Land.)
Rosetta looked at the giant man. His face was grinning as if he were expecting her reaction from the beginning. The girl herself didn't know how to respond towards the man.
"Ito ang regalo ko sa iyo, Rosetta. Alam kong mahalaga ang lupang pinanggalingan mo, at marahil ito rin ang paraan ko ng pasasalamat sa tulong mo kanina sa labanan laban sa Ursa Polaris Major." (This is my gift to you, Rosetta. I know the land you come from is important, and maybe this is also my way of thanking you for your help earlier in the battle against the Ursa Polaris Major.)
"...Hindi ako alam paano ko po pasasalamat para sa ito, Melekim." (I don't know how to thank you for this, Melekim.)
"Wag kayo mag alala, Rosetta. Sana ang pag gamit mo ito ay para sa mabuti. Wala akong paki alam ano ang magagawa mo sa mapa, basta ito ang gusto ko ibigay na regalo para sa iyo." (Don't worry, Rosetta. I hope you use this for good. I don't care what you do with the map, it's just that I want to give it as a gift to you.)
"...Maraming salamat po, Melekim. Hindi ako makalimutan ang kabutihan niyo." (Thank you very much, Melekim. I will never forget your kindness.)
The map itself was very detailed, showing the landscape of the Frozen North and the cities of the Amriel Kingdom. The routes that were lined up and the landmarks that showed the frequency of the Ruakh Lenakaz phenomenon and where to avoid them in certain times of the day were clearly displayed. There was a clear red line that goes to the fastest route towards the Margrave Eisen Land.
Rosetta doesn't know if Melekim was the one who drew the map itself or he bought it somewhere. But, what she knows is that she has a clear path on her way back to her homeland.
Without wasting any time, Rosetta disappeared in a burst of speed, surpassing human perception as the clouds of snow were produced as the young girl's figure rapidly disappeared into the distance. Leaving the leader of the expeditionary group and a few others who saw them in awe.
It happened in broad daylight, but it was around mid-afternoon when Rosetta left the expeditionary group; to reclaim what had been taken from her.
XXX
Samuel saw in the distance a cloud of snow burst, knowing that it was his student that created it. Her figure was disappearing into the distance with such speed that he was proud that she managed to gain that level of power within seven months since the start of her training.
On the other hand, what he saw was also a sign that she had chosen her path.
The black-haired sighed. He was aware of his student's character, and he had been anticipating whether or not she would listen to him. It was readily apparent from the snow cloud that she had chosen the latter.
As the young girl left to take back her homeland, Samuel was left alone; watching his young student to return whence she came.
The image of the red-haired woman appeared in his mind. Her full appearance was vivid in his mind.
He stretched his arm as if to reach out to his student, who was now but a speck in the distance, but refrained himself as he knew she made her choice to go against the enemy that took away the life she knew.
"I am sorry..."
It was a soft whisper, quiet enough to not be heard in this isolated location. His thoughts invaded his mouth as he let out a silent plea.
"Please, be safe..."
Rosetta and the image of the red-haired woman merged. Thereby showing the connection between reality and his memories. There was nothing that could distinguish both figures from his mind.
He did not dare tell her; for he was forbidden to tell, even to those he knew. Even alone, he knew that even a thought or a word uttered by him would spell certain catastrophes.
"Samuel... Samuel…"
The voice, a voice so distinctive that only he can hear. A voice so mild, yet there was a firmness to it that defies all description.
The man knew the voice. A voice he could not ignore.
"Speak, Lord—"
His eyes narrowed, his gaze firm as he uttered the words with great conviction. He was aware of what it was, and there was nothing to deny it.
"—Thy servant heareth."
