Chapter 59 - The Cell

The silence stretched—long and heavy—punctuated only by the slow drip of water and the faint groan of rope as Adeline shifted her weight.

It was Seraphina who finally broke it, her voice still hoarse, but edged with steel.

Seraphina: "You don't look surprised to see me here."

Adeline let out a dry, brittle laugh—more ash than humor.

Adeline: "Still debating whether I've been cursed… or just spectacularly unlucky."

Seraphina's eyes swept the dim, grimy cell, her jaw tightening.

Seraphina: "This wasn't random. Someone planned this. Someone wanted both of us."(She turned to Adeline.)"You think this is about Elias?"

Adeline didn't answer right away. When she did, her voice was low and certain.

Adeline: "It's always about Elias."

Seraphina gave a short, humorless laugh.Seraphina: "He does have a talent for leaving ruin behind. Like it's an art."

Their eyes locked again. The tension shifted—still taut, but changed. Not hostile. Not quite.

Adeline: "He's probably tearing the city apart looking for you, though."

Seraphina blinked, and for a moment, something flickered in her expression—confusion, maybe. Or guilt.

Seraphina: "You think I wanted this?"

Adeline: "I think you live in a world where men move mountains when you say the word."

Seraphina didn't flinch. Instead, she leaned back against the wall and exhaled slowly, like a woman folding away a weapon.

Seraphina: "You think I have everything because of the way I look. Because of my name. But you don't know what it takes to keep wearing perfection like armor."

Adeline:(softly) "And you don't know what it's like to disappear in plain sight."

A beat passed. Something real settled between them—raw, flawed, and unexpectedly fragile.

Then Seraphina tilted her head, eyes sharp again.

Seraphina: "You love him."

Adeline looked away, jaw tightening.

Adeline: "We're not talking about that."

Seraphina: "You should. Because if he doesn't figure it out soon…"(She leaned in, voice dropping.)"Someone else will."

Adeline's lips pressed into a line—but before she could speak, a new sound broke the stillness.

Footsteps. Heavy. Deliberate. Drawing closer.

Then—silence.

Adeline:(a whisper) "They're checking on us."

Seraphina:(quietly) "Then let them find us ready."

They straightened in unison, expressions sharpening like blades drawn from velvet.

Rivals or not—it didn't matter anymore.

Now, they were in this together.

And survival had no room for pride.
