Chapter 43 - A Breath of Fresh Air

Messmer

The red prince set down the last volume as his fingers rubbed the bridge of his nose. He was exhausted already, but they had only just begun to unravel these strange mysteries. His head throbbed with pains of his old memories, but it was quieted by the feel of her hand on his shoulder.

"How about we take a break?" Rellana smiled, placing down a goblet filled with freshly warmed mead. He lifted it with a soft sniff and smiled.

"Juniper berries." He sighed in relaxation after a long sip before standing up. "Yes, perhaps a break is best."

"There's my Messmer." A soft squeeze of his shoulder before both turned and walked out of the library. Messmer tapped a small brick, hidden between bookshelves, and it opened slightly for them both to slip through. The hidden room was a swirl of red and blue carpets and sheets. The walls were simple, mostly decorated by a cpuple of paintings that Rellana had spent a few centuries perfecting. One of them being at last bound by marriage, while the other was of Marika at last returning to bring them home.

His eyes lingered for a little on the face of his mother. "Who... really, were you...?"

"We can think about that later, Messy." She smiled, pushing him playfully onto the thick bed.

He grunted as he fell, careful not to spill his goblet. "Careful now!" He jokingly exclaimed as he took another sip.

"Perhaps I would rather play rough." Messmer watched her begin to untie her robe and finished his mug in an instant.

"I rough like do!" He said a bit fumbly.

Rellana giggled, always charmed by his at times adorable shyness when it came to her. She had plans tonight, anyway, and she did not want the servants interrupting her and her lover's night.

...

"I am telling you!" The shorter guard shouted.

"Ehhhhh." The taller one responded.

"I saw it! With my owwwwn eyesssss." The lightly armored man motioned jokingly with his fingers to his eyes, just as they started drifting two separate ways. He grinned after a moment, and the other guard started snickering.

"You are so full of shit!" He chuckled humorously as he adjusted himself against the spear he was propped up again. Tall and slightly scruffy, a perfect pair to the thick bearded and shorter plump friend of his. Both simply wore the standard armor of their jobs as guards of Leyndell.

"Ya know, I haven't seen our friend in a minute." The shorter one said.

"Yeah. Almost out of liquor." The taller one scratched under his chin.

"Hope our girl is alright."

"I do too. Her drinks were fabuuuloussss."

"Yeaaaaahhhh!" As both chuckled. It was a boring job guarding the sewer entrances.

"You ever wonder if they care about us?" The taller one arched a brow at that question. "Like, all this elden lord bullshit."

"Blasphemy... but no. I doubt they even know we exist." He picked out a small bundle of strange orange grime from his ear. "The fuck...?"

"Ya know, I bet we could change that!"

"We could?"

"Yeah! How about we march right up to the throne room and ask that... uh. Whoever's in charge now that we deserve better!"

"Yeah!"

...

Blaidd

The wolfman trudged across the open snowfields. He was getting rather picky about just how damn cold it was. Not the cold itaelf, but how it always seemed to make his snout all snotty. He was about halfway to his destination by smell, however, and that filled him with the excitement to push on ahead. Besides, he would get to introduce his best friend and sister in the whole world to his new daughter! Sure, he found her, but the wolfman considered that it was as good as whatever went into making a kid normally.

He suddenly yelped, falling into a hole in the snow. He fell down rather safely to his relief on a bed of strange, thick vines that were soft and piable. It smelled of honey and wicker in this pit. What a poor trap this was. He climbed back out, just in time to see the boot of a woman waiting for him.

She was tall and well figured with notable pudge around the tummy. Peach skin and long straight green hair that seemed to be decorated in tangled leaves and bird feathers. She wore round glasses that gleamed with a strange shade of green, or maybe it was blue. Yet at some angles, it seemed orange, then green again.

"Uhm... I found your hole." He smiled sheepishly as the woman placed her hands in her hips and quirked an eyebrow with a little smile.

"Oh, I think that snout of yours needs a little more polish before you do." She giggled to herself as she offered her hand. She had a soft, mature voice that made him think of an old mother.

Blaidd smiled, even if he was a bit confused by what she said, and accepted her help. She was surprisingly strong, lifting him right out with ease and onto his feet. "Thank you!"

"You are welcome, my big hairy friend." She smiled as she fixed her glasses with her middle finger, pressing them up again by the center.

"So, what is the hole here for then?" He asked with a tilted head. He had noticed that, despite the whipping winds that were steadily turning his coat into icicles, this woman seemingly was unaffected.

"Oh, it's a carnivorous plant. You must not taste all that good." Her tone was teasing.

Blaidd slowly leaned down, licking his hand and sniffing at his own arm pit. He did smell a bit like a wet dog. This made her giggle warmly, and he smiled at her response.

"I am simply teasing. It's a safety net." She turned away as she spoke in a warm and approachable tone. "I don't care much for visitors since I am here to just make sure someone gets by, but I wouldn't mind your company. For a day or two, at least. It is a bit cold for traveling this far."

She led him as she spoke to a small cabin he swore wasn't there a minute ago. His questions, however, were silenced by the smell of a hot pot of stew. He was hungry, and that smelled amazing.
