It's so that they could resonate with them and reach Epic rank. An exception to this are those without defined genders, like Yilan and her Blue Eyes. BEWD technically is a girl according to anime lore, but BEWD lore isn't even explored here. They're just seen as powerful dragons of mass destruction. This is why Yu'er was confused when Luo Bai has an Epic . That said, there are apparently cases where duelists use opposite gender Decks and could resonate with them.

Anyhow, this was the case with Bai Yun and the P.U.N.K.s, as Bai Yun refers to Ze Amin as "she". Also, in the sentence "As she spoke, a cyberpunk-styled cross-dressing girl appeared in front of her", the "girl" part was clearly stated in the original.
