Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: Whispers of the Eclipse Engine

Kael Varyn stood frozen in the Neon Glow's alley, the Syndicate's cold, mechanical voice still ringing in his ears: "Contender detected—initiating lockdown protocol."

His HUD flashed a warning that made his stomach drop: 'Syndicate Enforcer Squad Detected—20 Meters.'

The neon lights above buzzed, their pinks and blues casting jittery shadows on the cracked pavement, but all Kael could hear was the pounding of his own heart.

"We're screwed," he whispered, his voice barely audible, his grip tightening on the Starlit Veil, its faint starry glow a flicker of hope in his trembling hand.

Anjali spun to face the alley's entrance, her dagger raised, her sharp eyes narrowing as her protective streak kicked into high gear.

"Run—now!" she snapped, her voice a fierce whisper, her body already moving to shield Kael from whatever was coming.

Toren fumbled with his cracked stun gun, his round face pale and sweaty, but his eyes darted to Kael with a trust that made Kael's chest ache.

"Where to, Kael?" he asked, his voice shaky but ready, his loyalty unshaken even in the face of danger.

Kael's Smarts stat—18—kicked in, his mind racing for a way out, his Chicago instincts screaming at him to think fast.

He scanned the alley, spotting a narrow gap between two crumbling buildings, barely wide enough to squeeze through.

"There," he said, pointing to the gap, his voice tight but determined.

"It's tight, but it'll get us out of this alley—buy us some time."

Anjali nodded, her expression fierce as she took the lead, her dagger catching the neon glow as she slipped into the gap, her movements quick and silent.

Kael followed, the Veil tucked into his jacket, his body scraping against the rough walls as he squeezed through, the sound of Syndicate enforcers' boots echoing closer.

Toren came last, his breath hitching as he struggled to fit, his stun gun clattering against the wall.

"I'm stuck!" he whispered, panic creeping into his voice, his wide eyes locking onto Kael's.

Kael reached back, grabbing Toren's arm and yanking him through with a grunt, the rough wall scraping his knuckles raw.

"I've got you," he said, his voice steady despite the chaos, Toren's trust in him fueling his resolve.

They stumbled into another alley, the Neon Glow's chaotic buzz a little quieter here, but the hum of Syndicate drones was still too close for comfort.

Kael's HUD pinged: 'Task Updated: Evade Syndicate Enforcers. Points: 500.'

"We need to keep moving," Anjali said, her voice low but urgent, her sharp eyes scanning the new alley for threats, her dagger still raised.

"They'll lock down the whole district if we don't get out of the Neon Glow soon."

Kael nodded, his mind still spinning, the weight of the Veil in his jacket a constant reminder of why they were being hunted.

He couldn't stop thinking about what Mara had said back in the safehouse—the Eclipse Engine, a Syndicate weapon that could drain a Contender's Essence, leaving them powerless.

If that thing was real, the Veil—and Kael's whole connection to the System—was on the chopping block.

"We need to figure out what this Eclipse Engine is," Kael said, his voice low as they moved through the alley, his Smarts stat pushing him to think ahead even as they ran.

"If it's in the Ashen Forge like Mara said, we've gotta get there—before they use it on us."

Anjali glanced back at him, her dark eyes flashing with worry, her protective streak clear as day.

"You're not going to the Ashen Forge alone, Kael," she said, her tone firm, leaving no room for argument.

"We're in this together."

Toren managed a shaky grin, his stun gun still in hand, his voice a little steadier now despite the fear in his eyes.

"Yeah, together," he said, his loyalty to Kael shining through like a beacon.

"I mean, I'm not great at the fighting stuff, but I'm not letting you face that place without me."

Kael felt a rush of gratitude for his friends, their bond the only thing keeping him from spiraling, their trust giving him the strength to keep going.

"Thanks, guys," he said, his voice soft but genuine, a small smile tugging at his lips despite the danger closing in.

They reached the end of the alley, the Neon Glow's main street stretching out before them, a chaotic mess of flickering holo-signs and shadowy figures bartering for Essence mods.

But the hum of drones was louder now, and Kael's HUD pinged again: 'Warning: Enforcer Squad—10 Meters.'

"They're right on us," Kael said, his voice tight, his heart racing as he scanned the street for a way out, his Smarts stat working overtime.

He spotted a rusted hoverbike parked near a stall, its owner distracted by a heated argument over Nexus credits.

"There—hoverbike," Kael said, pointing to the bike, his voice urgent.

"We can use it to get out of the Neon Glow—fast."

Anjali's eyes narrowed, her grip tightening on her dagger as she sized up the situation, her voice a low growl.

"I'll cover you," she said, her protective streak flaring as she moved to intercept anyone who might notice them.

Kael and Toren darted for the bike, Kael's hacker instincts kicking in as he hotwired the controls, his fingers flying over the Essence-infused panel.

The bike hummed to life, its engines sputtering but holding, and Kael swung onto the seat, Toren hopping on behind him with a nervous yelp.

"Got it!" Kael shouted, glancing back at Anjali, who was already running toward them, her dagger flashing as she slashed at a drone that got too close.

The drone sparked and crashed, but the sound drew the attention of the enforcers, their armored forms charging into the street with kinetic Essence crackling around them.

"Anjali, come on!" Kael yelled, his voice raw with panic as he revved the bike, Toren clinging to his waist like his life depended on it.

Anjali sprinted over, leaping onto the back of the bike just as Kael gunned the engine, the hoverbike lurching forward with a roar.

They sped through the Neon Glow's streets, weaving between stalls and dodging pedestrians, the enforcers' shouts echoing behind them as kinetic blasts scorched the air.

Kael's HUD flashed: 'Points: 400 (-100).'

"Hang on!" Kael shouted, his voice barely audible over the engine's roar, his focus locked on the road as he pushed the bike to its limits, the Neon Glow's neon haze blurring around them.

They burst out of the district, the Skyline's polished streets stretching out ahead, the towering spires a glittering reminder of the Syndicate's power.

Kael didn't slow down, his mind racing with their next move, the Veil's faint glow a fragile hope against the storm they were running from.

"We need to get to the Ashen Forge," Kael said, his voice steady despite the adrenaline pumping through him, his Smarts stat already piecing together a plan.

"But we need a rift key to get there—and we need to lose these guys first."

Anjali's grip tightened on his shoulder, her voice fierce but steady, her protective streak a quiet strength.

"We'll find a way," she said, her dark eyes scanning the streets for threats, her dagger still in hand.

Toren let out a shaky laugh, his voice a mix of fear and relief as he clung to Kael.

"We stole a bike and outran enforcers," he said, his grin wobbly but real.

"That's gotta count for something, right?"

Kael couldn't help but smile, Toren's words cutting through the tension, their bond a lifeline in the chaos.

"Yeah, it does," he said, his voice softening, a flicker of resolve igniting within him.

They sped into the Skyline's neon night, the Syndicate's enforcers still on their tail, the chat channel buzzing with the multiverse's whispers:

- 'NeonScout: "Starlit rookie just stole a bike—escaped the Neon Glow!"'

- 'RelicHound: "9000 creds and counting. I'm heading to the Skyline—kid's mine."'

- 'VoidWalker: "Eclipse Engine's live in the Ashen Forge. Kid better watch his back."'

Kael shut the channel off, his jaw tightening as the reality of the Eclipse Engine loomed larger than ever, the Ashen Forge a looming threat on the horizon.

He needed a rift key, a plan, and a miracle to face what was coming—but with Anjali and Toren by his side, he felt like they might just pull it off.

But before he could think too far ahead, a kinetic blast rocked the street ahead, the explosion sending debris flying as Varkis's towering form emerged from the shadows, his eyes glowing with rage.

"End of the line, rookie!" Varkis roared, his voice a thunderclap, his kinetic Essence surging like a storm ready to crush them.

Kael's heart stopped, his voice a desperate shout as he swerved the bike.

"Hold on—we're not done yet!" he yelled, the Syndicate's wrath closing in like a noose.
