Chapter 16 - Chapter16:Infernal Flames of the Core

The surface of the Rifted Soul Plain cracked beneath Chen Yuan's crystalline fingertips. He peered into the bottomless chasm below, feeling the furnace heat rise in golden beads on his crystal‑steel pauldrons. Off in the distance, Old Mo's caravan had halted; mechanical tentacles anchored the Starborn Prism to the ground, preventing the wheels from careening into the abyss.

"Are you sure this isn't Hell's own rollercoaster track?" Chen Yuan quipped, flicking his crystal arm casually. A storm‑rune blade sliced through drifting volcanic ash, revealing the writhing, blood‑flesh strata beneath.

"Patriarch, when you chose this site for your temple, did you also pitch a lava spa resort?"

The Pendant at his chest pulsed with indulgent warmth—its own brand of resigned affection.

Lilith's shadow‑energy formed a protective canopy around them, her silver eyes reflecting the glowing magma below:

"Selene's astral chart shows the temple's core altar lies in the molten layer beneath a mech‑cavern—walls of living gears and floors paved with monstrosity bones."

Tracing Chen Yuan's crystal arm, she noted, "Your mech‑arm's energy is spiking under these heat levels—need me to chill you down?"

"Thanks, but I'm more worried Old Mo's going to nick the Heart of the Core," Chen Yuan shot back, glancing at the gray‑robed tinkerer snapping off wheel plates. In Old Mo's pocket—three Chaos Cores glimmered.

"Besides, Earthfolk come factory‑preset for heat‑resistance—after all, we binge sci‑fi lava‑baths on screen till we level up that skill tree."

With a whoosh, the three plunged into the chasm. Instantly, living gears along the walls whirred to life—their teeth glinting in steam. Bone‑Vein Resonance flared, revealing vast armies of sacrificed magic‑path practitioners hidden in the rock—now serving as mechanical lubrication for these infernal wheels.

"Map? What map?" Chen Yuan snarled, driving his crystal blade through molten‑steel flesh.

"Next time I'll copy extra maps at the Grey‑Robes. Now it's just me, my bone‑sense, and whatever dark corridors I can carve."

The Pendant vibrated, as if to scold, "True masters forge without guides."

Deeper they fell, into a steel‑heart cavern: vast floating gears hovered above molten flows, each tooth a human phalanx. On a dais at the center floated twelve throbbing Chaos Cores—energy nodes for the Abyssal Temple itself. The shattered remains of Barû's Tentacle Prince hung inverted from the dome, its twelve arms now wrought as industrial chains, siphoning core energy ever downward.

"Master of Tentacles‑turned‑Gear‑Butler, you adapt quickly," Chen Yuan joked, igniting his arm's drill‑mode. With storm‑runes he bored a tunnel through the gear wall.

"Lilith, corrupt those chains' neural links! Selene, lock onto the Astral‑Core node at the dais—let's play hard‑core power‑down."

Selene's mask buzzed in the heat; her Astral Core painted a weakness:

"They're linked by monster‑spinal conduits—sever the main nerve and the whole system folds!"

"Spinal cord?" Chen Yuan murmured. "Perfect—time for the upgraded Nine‑Fold Corpse‑Refinement."

Crystal probes extended from his fingertips, plunging into the spine conduits. Magic‑path qi coursed through the gears' veins; each severed chain segment shattered under rune‑burn. "Patriarch, your mechanist ghouls are squealing—next time use painless mode!"

From the chains came Barû's tortured laugh—tentacles writhed into fresh sculpted gear‑chains:

"Key‑Bearer—destroy the altar? Thankless. In the depths, the 'Heart of the Forge' has melded with the planet's core…"

"Heart of the Forge? Sounds like steampunk hot‑pot mix," Chen Yuan quipped. He summoned the three‑hued orb into his palm.

"…but sorry, today's special is—Old‑One Stew!"

He launched the orb at the dais. The chasm trembled; the orb fused with the towering Core. In that instant, Chen Yuan's crystal arm rose uncontrollably toward the Heart of the Forge—a colossal chimera of magma, gears, and tentacles, its surface thrumming not with molten rock but pure Chaos.

"Pendant—why didn't you warn me this was a boss fight?" he sputtered. The arm's crystal cracked.

"Now I get to melt my mech‑arm? Or bone‑scales?"

In reply came a savage tide of energy: the Forge's tentacles splitting, each bearing a different Chaos attribute—flame, frost, corrosion, astral‑interference…

Lilith slashed through a corrosive limb, her silver eyes widening:

"It's emulating your powers!"

Chen Yuan tapped mech‑arm overdrive; the Azure Bone mechanist avatar shimmered.

"Okay then—time for the primal Corpse‑Refinement!"

He called forth his clockwork revenants—the mechanist corpses now immune to star‑trail mimicry—sundered the Forge's tentacles.

Selene's Astral Core flared, projecting the true core's location:

"At the twelfth conduit fissure!"

He leapt, firing a crystal bolt that shattered the Forge's Chaos Core into pure spirit‑qi. The chasm began to seal itself, turbulence dying in a reverse‑entropy pulse.

"See that? Official Edition beating the knock‑off!"

He caught the fallen remains—etched with Old‑One glyphs:

"Old Mo—how many Eternal Flame Seeds for this relic? I'm done scrubbing molten goo; my cloak's a lost cause."

With the core destroyed, the cavern collapsed—chains, engines, molten flows all consumed in a final spiral of reverse‑entropy. They tumbled up the newly formed shaft, Old Mo's caravan catching them at the lip just as the Earth snapped closed.

Back on the Rifted Plain, Chen Yuan examined two core shards in his palm—ashen‑jade from his father, cerulean‑blue from his mother—merging now in his crystalline bones. Selene's Astral Core gleamed beside them, a third star‑trail marking family unity.

"Mech‑arm insurance claim time," Chen Yuan grinned, peeling away his shattered pauldron to reveal fresh bone‑flesh beneath. "Also, props to Old Mo for nicking bits of the Forge's core—if that blows up, I'll call in your burial‑guards."

"Promise I'm researching perpetual‑fusion," Old Mo wheezed, tinkering with his eye‑amulet. "Might power your arm with zero fuel."

Lilith raised her head toward the clearing sky, once pallid now tinged with prismatic dawn—the warp of chaos cleansed into pure azure. Her silver eyes reflected Chen Yuan's form—no longer fragment, but a unified hybrid of crystal, bone, and rune.

"Your body…"

"Don't worry—just an upgrade skin," Chen Yuan replied, touching his storm‑runes as they ebbed into his flesh. "Now I can steam‑bathe in magma, navigate star‑rifts, summon the Patriarch's legions… though each summon means listening to his ancient lecturing."

Selene clutched his crystal‑bone hand as her Astral Core and the two rune‑shards chimed:

"I see… another bearer sleeping in the Core!" she gasped. "A woman—with Earth's constellations in her eyes."

His chest tightened; his father's remnant quaked inside the pendant. He recalled that museum moment—another hand on the jade. Could that have been his mother?

"Pendant—how many relatives do you hide?" Chen Yuan whispered—and the pendant shivered faintly, as if to say "All have their part."

"No matter—now I know: the ultimate key isn't a system or a token, but the stubborn will to reunite family," he vowed.

As night wind blew over the revitalized plain, Chen Yuan finally laughed. Ahead lay fresh challenges—the Old Ones stirring once more, new Chaos Cores emerging in dark crevices—but he now carried Earth's irreverent wit, the magic‑path cultivator's unyielding resolve, and the bonds of home. That triumvirate would blaze his legend through this Cthulhu realm.

And so their caravan rolled onward into the rising dawn—every bolt, every gear, every rune etched in new purpose as they pursued the next chapter of their extraordinary journey.
