Sophie woke up in the morning feeling so much better, she wasn't shaking she wasn't weak in the legs anymore, a big contrast to her almost breaking into pieces last night if it weren't for Resur holding tight like a centipede using all it's leg to keep all the broken pieces of a teapot together. She tore the blankets off of her, a bit too hot to be comfortable. She got off from the bed and walked up the stairs to the deck while yawning, stretching her body until it she feels every bone unlock from one another. She walks to the bow, staring at the beach stretching by in a parallel to the horizon. Her eyes halts once it lands on Resur shirt, black and plain. Left nearby the shore around 50 meters away from the ship. He probably gone out for a swim. Sophie jumped off the ship and walk to where his shirt lays. She stares at the twinkling water, waving at the sun that's rising. Sophie jumps into the water and looks around, the green coral reef gives the diamond clear water a hint of emerald. Schools of different coloured fish pass by her as she swam down, the soft white sand jumps in surprise as her foot touch down. She found a trace of sand, neatly spread apart as if someone dragged their leg through the sand. "Definitely him". She follows the trail to find him in the crater zone with around 7 pink fishes pierced through his wooden spear. Sadly their beauty didn't stop him making him his breakfast. This part of the ocean is still uninfected by the virus. In 1950 a lot of the ice started to melt already, causing the water level to rise by more than 60%. Most of the countries with low elevation like Cambodia, Thai, Vietnam, Brittan and Australia are either completely submerged or at least barely out of the water. The Government of most countries advised their citizens to pack as much food and essential supplies as possible and move to higher ground to avoid flooding. Sophie walked out the front door, heading to the beach like every morning, but this time she realize the beach was coming to her, its liquid fingers crawling up the beach all the way to the stairs leading down to the sand.
Sophie couldn't even see the trees anymore, and her dad didn't wanna move, he was wasting his life away on that stupid brown coach. Blake Racious, he was a good father, he married Sophie's mother out of love, but when he realize she would almost be entirely dedicated to her job as a environmental scientist, he couldn't get anything out of this marriage. Not love not affection not care except for meaning less sex, whenever he would say i love you to her or flirt with her he felt like he didn't mean it at all. It was like him trying to imitate the symptom of love. The first time he met her immediately admired her for her love of the planet, but now he regret it when he realize her love is only for the planet, not him. Yet his daughter got it every morning. She would kiss Sophie head to wake her up every morning, make meals for her and take her to school. He at first was happy she would rather do most of the parenting despite her job only to realize she now can never spare him a minute of her time. Blake felt more like he was a passenger in his own life, Instead of admiring Mercy for being a good mother, it turns into jealousy, and the once bright smile of his daughter that use to lighten up his dad now brings him down. "Why do you get her love and not me?" .
Once the water reach the house, Sophie wasn't scared of her father anymore, he can't beat her he can't do anything, he was just suffering from his depression, it smells, the whole house smells. He wouldn't go to the bathroom he wouldn't get out of that chair. The lack of hygiene attracted maggots to grow in the coach, while his butt and back sticks to the chair. His blood, failing liver and shit piling up on the coach concocted a horrible smell. Day by day Sophie fear turns into resentment and hate, she wouldn't even step into the living room except for when has to throw him a few cams of beers. Her neighbors were aware of her situation, and out of pity they would let her come to their house, do most of the chores, looking after their kids for some money. They actually paid her well, and Sophie developed more bonds with them in a month than with a father in her entire life. She grew attached to the kids, seeing them as her little siblings. Their family gave her a room, a way of income, warmth and it wasn't stinking in black water since the house was covered with a 30 inch tall and 122 long water filled tube around the whole property. They didn't beat her for trying to enjoy the food, they helped her with her life, if she got problems they would comfort and help her without invalidating her feelings. Sophie wished they were there for her when she graduated.
Sophie stared at her house down below from the balcony, the water already intruded through the door 2 nights ago. She wondered if her dad drown in his own shit by now. The answer floated to the top of the water, bloated and even more lifeless than when he was drunk. She covered her mouth, despite how much she hates him she never wanna see his dead body, it was disgusting. She stared at it, wide eyed until she sees a something orange slowly emerge through the dark murky water. It looks like a blanket if it was held side ways with her looking at it from the top left. The head of a giant fish pops out of the water, it looked like it was a giant gold fish. The fish mouth's open up, sucking water and her father dead body in. The body stopped half way and the fish dove back down into the water, blood and organs rushed to the top, leaving only his leg. Sophie ran down to the family, she was completely enveloped in fear but she realize she needed to tell everyone about what happen. She jumped down the stairs and called everyone into the kitchen. Gerald came in first, an elderly man with a big belly but big heart, most of his hair is gone except for some white strands on the back and side of his head, covered in wrinkles from face to neck, his smile is the most noticeable, dressed in a blue t shirt and cargo pants. Rosa was slender, she wore a black dress with flowers blooming from all angles, Sophie remembers her hair to be black but extremely red when found by sunlight. She doesn't smile much but when she does it's heart warming, the way her weak eyes compliments her face when she's happy make her strangely adorable. Vika was short, barely reaching Sophie hips, black hair from her father, she had an oval face, and she looks like she has acorns in her cheeks, looking clueless but innocent about everything. Virak was had strong thick eyebrows and his eyes looks like they got so much emotions behind it, like they're about to burst in lasers. His resting face make him look angry but he's actually a sweet boy. Reaching up to Sophie shoulders, long black hair and a lean body.
"I'm going to ask you all to believe me when i say this, i just saw a giant fish ate my father dead body".
"....." Everyone was silent but they were definitely perplexed and surprised.
"Sophie sweet may i ask where you saw this"? Gerald asked.
"Infront of the balcony of my room, i saw his body float up the water then this orange fish just sucked him into its mouth before diving back under the water!"
Virak was covering his sisters ears as he led him out of the room, ordered by their mum. Rosa and Gerald stayed and listen to her.
".....We believe you dear...." Rosa spoke up after a long pause, Gerald nodded in agreement.
"May i ask if you sure you do?". The two smiled at her being considerate despite the situation.
"We're sure, you haven't told us a single lie when you joined us darling, and you're the marine biologist after all." Gerald said, his hand on her shoulder.
Sophie smiled and hugged him, crying in his arms as she let out everything she wanted to say about her father. Gerald looked at the other and told them to pack up.
The family called in Rescue that morning, a helicopter arrived, specifically suggested by Sophie herself when they wanted to come on boat, they argued back around until Sophie told them about the giant fish.
The family went on to live in Thai, while Sophie went to Cambodia to conduct research about the mutated fishes, dubbed as leviathan by Sophie herself. She was on the deck staring at the moon, fantasizing and her life as they rode back to Thai. It was smooth sailing until a giant black shape rose out of the water, it stared at the frozen passenger as if it's a farmer choosing which pig he will slaughter tonight. Its eyes landed on a frail young boy, he looks about 19 to her. The thing lunged at him, piercing through his chest with her legs, it didn't completely go through him like she expected but he fell down to the floor, completely unconscious. She ran to him but then giant amounts of leviathans rushed at the ship, they bumped and sunk their teeth through the hall, sending a shock wave through the whole entire ship. Alarms blared as the ship slowly capsized to the right. She fell down to the side, but grabbed the railings in time. The boy from earlier dropped into the water below her, his eyes were flashing purple before he plunged into the water. Her thoughts priority went back to her hands that burning in pain from the stress of carrying her whole entire body. She fell down into the water, thinking the leviathans might get her soon once it circles around the ship. What she saw next was the silhouette of a Moth plunging into the water, it reach out one of its arm to her, Sophie didn't know what to do but its wings were colorful, brown and white. She didn't know if she could trust it or not but she reach out her hand to meet the moths. Their fingers touch and the moth grabbed her into his body before pulling out of the water. What she felt next was endless warmth flowing through her body constantly. The moth kissed her head and she felt asleep immediately. The next day she woke up on an island, in the broken bow of the ship with a tattoo of wings on her back. She survived by spear fishing nearby the coral reef and hunting in the forest. It was getting lonely after she met that boy.
Resur looks up and saw Sophie swimming toward him, he smiles and swims toward her, handing her the spear until he realize he forgot his other one. He swam back to grab it before they both head out of the water together.
"Hah, hah, it took me so long to get these guys, they were so fast." Resur Says.
"Pfft, I'll lend you the net once i fix it."
"THA- Hah- thanks".
The two made a fire nearby the ship and grilled the fish, sitting across one another legs wide, wiggling the sand between their toes.
"You know Sophie i think i might go insane and die if didn't have you".
"Sproof, if the leviathans don't get you first".
"Speaking of leviathans what are they anyways? I never seen them before until the great flood".
"Well, they're basically just animals that got their DNA changed by a micro parasite. They would go through the gills or mouth and it'll attach itself to stem cells or nerve tissues then spit out loads of DNA and RNA. In that stage the symptoms are usually unstoppable twitching, and a high body temperature. Then there's a big flux of hormones, they'll grow and swell bigger, permanently new muscles building and some bones fuse while others grow bigger. Then the parasite will invade the nervous system and take over the brain. That's when there's no control left and they will start killing everyone."
"Holy cow i thought it was a virus. Thanks for telling me".
Sophie smiles and hand him some grilled fish, the two enjoyed their meal under the setting sun, staring off the horizon. Sophie and Resur feels like they are looking at something, it's look like a wave but it's too long and slender, and it's not moving. It dove back in the water while the other one spread its wing then dove back in the water with the other.
".....I saw that too". Resur spoke up.
"I think that's the thing we saw on the ship".
"The centipede thingy if i may ask you to confirm".
"yep, that and a moth".
"Moth? Yeah, i fell into the water and i was gonna accept my death until a giant moth rescued me, it kissed my head then i woke up on this island. I even got a tattoo on my back. I can't see all of it but i can tell it's wings."
"May i see?"
Sophie cheek's turned pink but she agreed nonetheless. She turned her back and lift up her shirt, keeping it below and around her breast to shield them while showing him her back, leaning during the process a little.
"It's...Beautiful, i mean it".
Sophie suppressed a smile then put her shirt back down.
"Thank you, your back looks nice too, i don't even know if mine is a tattoo or not but it seems they're all connected to the thing that blessed us".
"Moth god and Centipede god, and they're both friendly with one another, also i feel like they're not the cause of the large tide of Leviathans that attacked us that night".
"Yeah same, i don't think they would save us".
"Well mine attacked me but i guess it was worth it, i can breathe underwater longer now, I feel much stronger too".
"Mine kissed me and now i can hear better, and smell much better, not to mention, i feel like i always know where all the directions are, i get tingles in my chest, like something is pulling me when I'm facing north, the sensory changes with other directions."
"You got a built in GPS".
Sophie giggles and stared at him. "I guess you could say that, anyways lets go back inside, it's my turn to patrol, I'll make us another bed soon".
Resur snuffed out the fire and went back like she instructed, as he got half way through the stairs he still see her on the shore, between the holes in the railing of the bow. He smiles and wished her goodnight before heading down to bed.
"Good night to you too, Resur". Sophie replied, meters way.
