Chapter 31 - The breaking point

Dr. Kariuki stood in front of his study's window, staring out at the city skyline. The lights of Nairobi flickered in the distance, the city alive with motion, but within him, there was a cold stillness. He had pushed the pieces of his plan into motion, and yet, something had gone terribly wrong. Annah, his carefully sculpted tool for vengeance, was starting to unravel.

The cracks were showing.

She had begun questioning him, questioning everything he had told her. Her mind, once a malleable vessel for his ideas, was no longer as pliable as it had been. She had started to see the truth: she had been used, manipulated into a course of action that had never been hers to begin with. She was no longer the vengeful agent he had created; she was becoming something else, someone who could potentially bring his entire plan crashing down.

Kariuki clenched his fists, his knuckles turning white as the weight of the situation pressed on him. His perfect façade was starting to crack, and he could feel the pressure mounting. He knew that time was running out.

He needed to act quickly.

The first thing he had to do was neutralize Stella Njoroge. She was the one person who could expose him for what he truly was, the one person who could unravel everything he had carefully built. He had underestimated her, but now, it was clear: she was no longer just a detective. She was a threat. And like any threat, she had to be eliminated.

But there was also Annah. He couldn't let her slip through his fingers. She was essential to the final phase of his plan, the final act of vengeance. He couldn't allow her to doubt him any further. She needed to see the truth, his truth...the truth that everyone involved in his daughter's death had to pay for their crimes. But the more she questioned, the more volatile she became. The more volatile she became, the more dangerous she was.

Kariuki knew that his next steps had to be calculated. He couldn't afford to rush, his plan had always been one of precision. He had manipulated every piece of this game, and he would not let it fall apart now.

He had seen a lot of things and he had to put an end to it somehow.

The first move was to neutralize the threat that was Stella. Kariuki had worked in the shadows for too long, operating in secrecy, manipulating Annah without revealing his true intentions. But now, he needed to bring Stella closer, make her think that she was on the verge of discovering the truth, all while keeping her in his grasp.

He contacted his political contacts,Mwirigi's associates, the ones who were still tied to the conspiracy. The same ones who had once helped cover up his daughter's death. They had the resources to make things happen. They could silence Stella if needed. With their help, Kariuki planned to mislead Stella into following a false trail, making her focus on other suspects, and divert her attention away from him.

But that wouldn't be enough. Stella had proven to be more resilient than he had anticipated, and she was becoming more suspicious of him by the day. The next step was more direct: he needed to make her trust him, to bring her into his fold, just like he had done with Annah.

He would play the long game, letting her think she had the upper hand, all while slowly tightening the noose around her neck. She would believe she was on the cusp of uncovering a grand conspiracy, but in reality, she would be walking into his trap.

But the real problem, the one that gnawed at him, was Annah. He couldn't afford to lose her. She was his creation, his instrument of vengeance, and she was slipping away.

That should not happen .

Annah was in turmoil. The world around her was crashing down, and she was caught in the middle of a storm she no longer understood. Kariuki had been her rock, her guide, but now, as the haze of manipulation began to lift, she saw the truth.

The walls that Kariuki had so carefully constructed around her mind were beginning to crumble. She could see the strings he had pulled, the way he had shaped her pain and grief into something darker, something more dangerous. She had believed in him, trusted him,but now she understood that she had been nothing more than a pawn in his grand game of revenge.

She was breaking free, but it was not easy. Her mind still clung to the old patterns, the old beliefs. Kariuki had made her into a weapon, and even now, she struggled with the urge to follow through with the violent impulses he had awakened in her. But deep down, she knew it wasn't her desire. It wasn't her mission. It was his.

The weight of the truth crushed her. She had been living someone else's life, someone else's vengeance. It had always been Kariuki's pain, his rage. He had used her as a tool, and now, she had to find her own way out of this madness.

But she couldn't do it alone. The more she tried to break free, the more entangled she became in his web. Kariuki was always watching, always manipulating, always pulling her back in.

Kariuki knew that the time for subtlety was over. Annah knew the truth now, and if he didn't act quickly, he would lose her forever. He had to make her see reason, make her understand that he was the only one who truly cared about her, the only one who had the answers she sought.

He arranged to meet her in the same private clinic where their relationship had begun. It was a familiar place,a place of safety, of trust. He had spent countless hours with her there, planting seeds of doubt and anger, shaping her into the person she had become.

As Annah entered the clinic, she felt a sense of unease settle in her chest. She knew what was coming. She could feel Kariuki's presence like a shadow lurking in the background, waiting to pounce.

He was sitting behind his desk, his calm demeanor masking the storm that churned beneath the surface. When he looked up, their eyes met...cold, calculating, but with a hint of something else: desperation.

"Annah," he said softly, his voice almost a whisper. "You're the only one who understands me. I've given you everything,my guidance, my protection. Don't throw it all away now."

Annah shook her head, her breath coming in sharp, uneven gasps. "No. I see now. I see what you've done. You've used me, Dr. Kariuki. You've twisted my pain to suit your own needs. You never cared about me. You cared about revenge."

His expression hardened. "You're wrong. I cared for you more than you'll ever understand. This isn't just about revenge, Annah. This is about justice. This is about exposing the people who destroyed us."

Annah's heart raced, the old anger flaring up within her. But this time, it was different. She didn't feel the same blind rage. She felt something stronger...clarity.

"I'm done, Kariuki," she said, her voice steady. "I won't be your tool anymore. I'm not your weapon."

Kariuki stood up suddenly, his eyes flashing with fury. "You don't get to walk away from this, Annah. Not now, not after everything we've been through. You belong to this cause. You belong to me."

But Annah had already taken a step back. "No. I belong to myself."

The words hung in the air, heavy and final.

Kariuki's mask cracked. "Then you're a fool," he spat, his voice venomous. "A fool who doesn't understand the cost of what you're about to lose."
