Chapter 29 - Dr kariuki's masterplan

The air in Kariuki's study was thick with the smell of old leather and ink. The room, dimly lit by a single desk lamp, was filled with papers detailing the names, faces, and connections of those he had manipulated. His life's work, his grand design, was carefully laid out before him. But as he sat at his desk, the dim light casting long shadows across his features, there was a sense of unease that hadn't been there before.

Stella was getting too close.

He had always expected this. A detective of her caliber wouldn't be deterred for long, especially when the investigation had begun to unravel the ties between the victims, Mwirigi, and the people who had wronged him. But what she didn't know, what she couldn't possibly understand, was how carefully he had crafted everything. Every move, every word, every death had been part of a grand plan.

He had used Annah as his instrument, her pain and rage as fuel for the fire that had burned so brightly in his chest for all these years. He had watched her become his shadow, his reflection. But now, she was starting to doubt, and that posed a problem.

Dr. Kariuki leaned back in his chair, his fingers brushing the worn edges of a photograph,a picture of his daughter, Njoki, when she was young, her smile bright and untainted by the horrors that had come later. Her face had been a symbol of everything he had lost. It was his motivation, his obsession. The only thing that had kept him going for so long.

But Stella's investigation was a crack in the foundation. The truth was slipping out. He could feel it.

Stella had always been methodical in her work, following the trail of evidence wherever it led. But this case, this tangled mess of secrets, lies, and manipulation, had her second-guessing everything she thought she knew. She'd thought she understood the psychology of criminals. She'd thought she could see through their facades. But Dr. Kariuki's façade was too polished, too perfect. It was as if he was always two steps ahead, always anticipating her every move.

She had started watching him more closely, attending his public appearances, monitoring his movements. Kariuki was always calm, composed, never showing any signs of stress or fear. But recently, she had seen small cracks in his mask, fleeting moments when his eyes darted too quickly, when his hands trembled ever so slightly as if he was hiding something deeper. It was in his meetings with Annah, too, when she had watched their interactions with growing suspicion. He was guiding her, controlling her, pushing her into darker and darker corners.

Why?

It was that question that had started to gnaw at her, the one she couldn't answer. And it was the one she was determined to find out. What was his connection to the deaths? What was his real motive? Was it revenge for his daughter, or was there something more sinister at play?

Late one evening, after hours of sifting through documents and trying to make sense of the web of connections, Stella received another anonymous message. It was a simple text:

Kariuki knows too much. He's dangerous. Watch him.

The words sent a cold shiver down her spine. She had suspected that there was more to Kariuki's story, but this was confirmation. Someone else was aware of his involvement. But who? And why were they trying to help her? Was it a trick? A deliberate attempt to send her down the wrong path?

As she paced her office, the pieces began to fall into place. Kariuki was more than just a doctor. He had been a player in a much larger game, one that spanned years, pulling strings and influencing events far beyond Annah's case. Stella's heart pounded with the realization, this wasn't just about a father avenging his daughter's death. This was about power. About the destruction of those who had wronged him.

While Stella pieced together the fragments of her investigation, Annah was drowning in her own thoughts. She had killed Mwirigi, but the victory felt hollow. It wasn't enough. No matter how many lives she took, the weight of the truth pressed heavier and heavier on her chest. She had been manipulated. She had been played.

The realization hit her like a physical blow. Dr. Kariuki hadn't just been helping her cope with her pain,he had been feeding her rage, directing her like a puppet on strings. He had orchestrated every death, every step of her journey toward vengeance, and now, as her mind spiraled further into chaos, she understood the depth of his manipulation.

But it wasn't just the manipulation that disturbed her. It was the fact that Kariuki had been lying to her all along. It wasn't just Lucy or Mwirigi or the preacher that he was after. It was something far deeper, something that had been buried for years, the murder of his daughter, Njoki.

The more Annah thought about it, the more she realized that Kariuki's entire plan had been about revenge, not for her, but for himself. She had been nothing more than a tool in his vendetta, a means to an end.

And now, she couldn't escape it. The ghost of Njoki haunted her every step. Kariuki's obsession with revenge had become her own, and she was trapped in it, unable to break free.

Stella was beginning to make her move. Armed with new information and a growing suspicion that Dr. Kariuki had been manipulating Annah all along, she decided to confront him. She had been patient long enough. The time had come.

Late one night, she tracked him down to his private clinic, the place he often retreated to when the weight of the world pressed too hard. The building was eerily quiet, the faint hum of fluorescent lights the only sound. Stella stood outside his office, watching the silhouette of Kariuki pacing inside. She had seen enough. It was time to get answers.

With a deep breath, Stella pushed open the door and stepped inside. Kariuki froze at the sound of the door creaking, his eyes narrowing as they met hers.

"Detective," he said, his voice calm, measured. "What brings you here at this hour?"

"I have some questions," Stella replied, her voice steady. "And I think you can help me answer them."

For the first time, there was a flicker of unease in Kariuki's eyes. But he quickly masked it, his composure returning as if nothing had changed. He stepped toward her, hands clasped behind his back.

"You're out of your depth, Detective," he said quietly. "You don't understand what you're dealing with. These people, the ones you think are responsible for all of this, they are not the ones you should be hunting. They are victims too, in their own way. But you're too focused on the wrong side of the story."

Stella's heart raced. She had known something was off about Kariuki's calm demeanor, but this… this was more than she had expected. He wasn't just defending himself,he was deflecting, manipulating the conversation, just as he had done with Annah.

"I know what you've been doing, Dr. Kariuki," Stella said, her voice hardening. "You've been controlling Annah. Using her to do your dirty work. This whole thing,it's your vendetta. You've been playing everyone, including her."

Kariuki's mask slipped. His hands clenched at his sides, his jaw tightening. But he recovered quickly, his gaze cold and calculating.

"You don't know anything, Detective," he said, his tone low and dangerous. "You think you understand the depths of my pain, but you don't. You think you can stop me? You're just a part of the system. The system that's responsible for my daughter's death. You're too late."
