Chapter 20 - The breaking point.

Detective Stella Njoroge sat at her cluttered desk, the hum of the police station barely noticeable amidst the chaos in her mind. She'd never felt this close to something she couldn't control. Every lead she had followed had felt like it led to a dead end. Wendo Munge's death had opened the floodgates, but the more Stella dug, the more it became apparent that the case was deeper than she had initially imagined.

A new name had surfaced,Senator John Mwirigi. A name she had heard in passing before, always with respect, always untouchable. A man who wielded power not just through politics, but through manipulation, secrets, and influence. His connection to Wendo wasn't just incidental; it was the thread that had tied together all the unanswered questions. And now, it seemed that thread was about to unravel.

Stella leaned back in her chair, rubbing her temples. The revelation that Mwirigi had been part of the cover-up made everything more complicated. She'd suspected corruption, but this was far beyond her expectations. Wendo's crimes hadn't just been ignored, they had been protected, buried deep within the layers of the city's power structure.

"Detective?" Her partner, Constable Tom Ruto, appeared in the doorway, his voice breaking through her thoughts. His eyes were somber, as if he'd just been handed a piece of bad news himself.

Stella didn't answer immediately. She simply stared at the pile of files in front of her, files that now seemed useless in light of what she had just learned.

"Detective," Ruto repeated, stepping into the room and pulling up a chair beside her. "We've got a new lead on the Mwirigi angle. It's not good."

Stella straightened, her attention snapping back to him. "What's happened?"

Ruto slid a folder across the desk, his fingers trembling slightly as he handed it over. "A witness. They claim they saw Mwirigi leaving the hospital the day Lucy Mumo was assaulted and killed. They say he was with Wendo."

Stella opened the folder, scanning through the statement. A woman. Young, nervous, a background check revealed she was a nurse who had been on duty that night.

She'd seen them together. Mwirigi and Wendo. Two powerful men, walking through the hallways as if they owned the place. The woman had been too afraid to speak up at the time, but after Wendo's death, she'd come forward, fearing that someone might connect her to the cover-up.

"This is huge," Stella muttered, her mind racing. It was the first solid connection she had between Mwirigi and the assault on Lucy. This wasn't just about Wendo's crimes anymore. It was about everything, the cover-up, the silencing of Lucy, the destruction of evidence. And now, with Wendo dead, the walls were starting to close in on Mwirigi.

"Do we have anything else on Mwirigi?" Stella asked, her voice harder now, sharper. "Anything that ties him to the murders?"

Ruto hesitated, his eyes darting around the room. "We've been running background checks on him. There's something off, but no concrete evidence yet. He's too powerful, too well-protected. But we'll keep digging."

Stella exhaled slowly. She knew what that meant. Politics, influence, money, all of it worked against them. But she couldn't back down now. Not when she was so close to uncovering the truth.

"Get me everything you can on Mwirigi," Stella said, her voice cold with determination. "Every scrap of information, every connection. I don't care what it takes. We need to bring him in."

Ruto nodded and stood up, walking out of the room with the folder in hand. Stella sat alone in the stillness of the office, the weight of the case pressing down on her chest.

She had always prided herself on getting answers. On cutting through the lies. But this, this was different. The closer she got to the truth, the more it felt like the ground was shifting beneath her feet. Mwirigi had been a part of something bigger. And with every new detail, she could feel the weight of his power looming over her, making her fight harder to stay in control.

Stella stood up abruptly and walked to the window, looking out over the city that she had sworn to protect. The view was familiar, comforting. But today, it felt suffocating.

She wasn't going to let this go. Not now. Not when everything was on the line.

Her phone buzzed on the desk. She glanced at the screen.

It was an anonymous message. The text was short, direct:

"You're too late. Everything you think you know is a lie. Mwirigi isn't the only one to blame."

Stella's pulse quickened. The message had no signature, no trace of who had sent it, but the implication was clear. Someone was watching her, someone who knew more than they should. And they were trying to warn her.

Her hands clenched into fists as she read the message again. The walls were closing in. But she wouldn't back down.

With a steady resolve, Stella turned away from the window and sat back at her desk. She picked up the phone, dialing the number of a trusted colleague at the Bureau of Investigation.

"We're going after Mwirigi," she said, her voice low but unyielding. "I need everything on him. Now."
