Cherreads

Chapter 4 - Welcome to college of nursing

 The morning sun stretched lazily across the sky. It's golden rays spilling over the dew-kissed grasses around the hostel compound. The mango tree leaves danced around in rhythm to the light early morning breeze. Somewhere across the fence, a bird chirped here and there. Everything seems to be a good sign today. A sign that shows the dawn of a new day, a day where I get to show the world who is Jenny smith is-or maybe a day where I might stammer while introducing myself - either ways, it's a new day. I have to make sure everything turns out perfect. I just need to observe before I make new friends, though I'll love to make one today.

 I took my bath, brushed and had breakfast as rapidly as possible. I didn't want to be late on my first day in school, I heard there are consequences though we'll be likely to be pardoned since it's our first day, but it's too early to be in any lecturer's black book right?.

 "Hey early bird, you might wanna slow down a bit. This is a few minutes past 6 and orientation starts by 8 so please just chill. We'll be going to school together anyways" she added with a smile.

 When did we suddenly become friends? ....I don't understand where all this sweetness and friendliness is coming from. This wasn't the plan Jenny!. I'm supposed to observe first. I just have to find a way to keep my distance.

 "And a good morning to you too" I replied dryly.

 " Don't worry, you'll get used to me roomie".

 Roomie?.....I hate to admit but I love the sound of that. I just need to keep building this wall between us either way.

 " Maybe I will, maybe I won't, just don't make me late" I responded just to see her squint her eyes and shrug her shoulders.

 "I'm outside if you need me" I added and walk out of the room with my backpack.

 I walked downstairs as gently as I could, careful not to run into another soul who's eager to make friends.... Or rather too desperate. I stood outside the hostel gate for about fifteen minutes and after the long wait the students finally came out in troops like ants going towards their anthill. Benita tugged at my arm, seeming not to notice the fact that I don't want her energy right now. We finally got into the school's bus that I didn't notice when I came out at first. It was big. Specially gotten for the hostel nursing students. After making sure that everyone had settled down, the bus driver drove off.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~. After a twenty minutes drive, we arrived that the school gate. It was a big blue gate with an inscription on it- The hands that care- seems like a it was quoted from one of the numerous nursing leaders. Well, I guess we'll find out about it sooner or later.
 I walked into the school building looking like a lamb led to the slaughter. I didn't know exactly where I was going to but I guess I just followed the crowd while Benita kept trailing right behind me like a lost puppy. After a little hullabaloo, we finally found the grand hall where the orientation was going to take place. I scanned the large hall and looked for a seat that wasn't too.... attention-seeking or giving too much of a back bencher vibe. Luckily for me, the roll was already occupied so Benita couldn't sit next to me. Rather a sat next to a petite, average height, dark-skinned girl who was giving my type of vibe.
 "Where exactly are you from?....I'm from around here." the girl by her right said to her.
 " That's kinda a really forward question, why don't you ask me again when we get to know each other better" she replied with a hint of sarcasm.
 "Alright, I will." the girl responded, oblivious to the sarcasm.
 I couldn't help but chuckle at the girl's type of humour, she certainly my type of person .
 " They just won't learn, would they?" I murmured to myself.
 "Yeah, right!.... tell me about it. I've been trying to keep calm the whole of yesterday. Well, I won't do that anymore" she replied while squinting her eyes.
 "I'm Renee by the way, and you are?" She asked
 "I'm Jennifer but you can call me Jenny" I replied with a soft smile.
 She was the only person I willing wanted to introduce myself to. I guess that means something.
 "Nice to meet someone who understands what sarcasm is" she said and we both chuckled.
 I opened my mouth to said something to that effect but got interrupted by a beautiful, light skinned lady. She was probably in her late forties but still she managed to slay in that pretty dress of hers.
 "Good morning everyone " she greeted.
 "Good morning ma" we chorused.
 "My name is Mrs Gregory and I'm your provost. I must say it's really an honour to have you all here at College of nursing science, Clinvale. I say a heart warming welcome to you all"
 "Thank you ma" we chorused
 The talk continued for about 30 minutes after which she handed the microphone to another lady who told us about the school and it's rules while another lady distributed the college handbook and procedure manual.
 The men and women who stood before us took turns to address us, then finally our class coordinators was introduced to us and we were shown to our class. Renee and I walked into the class together and sat down right next to each other. When the whole class got settled down, the lecturer began to get familiar with a few faces in the classroom, after which lectures began in earnest.
 "I'll be your anatomy lecturer and I'll be getting you acquainted with some anatomical terms" He said.
 "First of all anatomy is the study of the structure of the body while physiology is the study of the functions of those body structures". He continued.
 I was listening attentively untill I felt like someone was boring my head with his or her eyes and I turned to look towards their direction. My gaze met a pair of cute brown eyes. I couldn't shift my gaze like I normally would and the dude didn't budge either, but what I didn't know was that my extracurricular activities were noticed by my new friend by my side.
 "Sis, ain't it too early to be falling for some random guy you just met?" She asked strictly but I noticed how her eyes shone mischievously.
 " Seriously?...I wasn't" I groaned nervously. My belly was already making churning movements but that wasn't because I didn't eat enough breakfast. This definitely had something to do with the brown eyes dude. So I rushed to defend myself before Renee knew something was up.
 "I know he's hot but I wasn't staring at him I was just-"
 "Hey!!!... You there, get up!".
