Chapter 15 - Chapter 15: Full of harvest

The matter with Kiko had settled for now.

Maki wasn't in a rush to hatch the insect eggs given to her by her grandfathers. Instead, she chose to hatch the second set—the ones she found at the station.

Each egg was no larger than a soybean, a whole handful nestled in the earthen pot.

As they began to hatch, the eggs swelled slightly. Within minutes, small flying insects broke free of their shells.

Each one was about the size of a knuckle—much larger than typical parasitic insects. And unlike them, which belong to the Coleoptera order, these were clearly Lepidoptera.

They resembled butterflies, covered in soft white scales.

With two pairs of delicate wings, big round eyes, and tiny fuzzy bodies, they looked almost too cute to be real.

All white, they reminded Maki of little rabbits. Their feathery antennae curved like floppy bunny ears—or twin ponytails.

In short, they were adorable.

"Isn't this a silkworm moth?" Maki muttered, eyeing one of the little creatures.

It even nibbled at leaves and spun silk.

But unlike Earth silkworms, which spin silk as larvae, these bugs were doing it as full-grown adults.

They didn't seem to have any combat ability.

One was flapping its wings helplessly, unable to fly. Maki frowned.

What's the point of these things?

It appeared to be releasing pheromones—probably a courtship behavior.

"Looks like a failure," Old Man Kaigan commented, walking over.

"Failure?" Maki raised an eyebrow.

"In nature, the cutest creatures usually have a trick up their sleeve. Think about dolphins and sharks. Even sharks, as vicious as they are, avoid messing with dolphins unless they want to die."

Kaigan sighed.

"The tribe once tried cultivating other insects, but none surpassed parasitic types. So these… were left behind—failed experiments, you could say."

But that wasn't the full story.

Even powerful figures like the Bug Girl eventually withered with age, their vitality fading.

And yet these fluffy little creatures… they still radiated life.

Just as Maki was about to test one, Kiko casually took her finger—and the insect on it—into her mouth.

Startled, Maki glanced over.

Kiko looked up at her, wide-eyed and innocent.

The poor bug was already gone.

"Open your mouth!" Maki barked.

This girl… she really doesn't hold back.

Kiko obediently opened her mouth, showing no remorse.

In fact, her gaze shifted toward the earthen jar with interest.

Seeing that, Maki licked her lips.

It might actually taste good...

"Was it tasty?" Maki asked.

Kiko nodded eagerly.

"Try eating it cold next time. See how that goes," Maki said thoughtfully.

Then, without warning, she gave Kiko a chop to the head.

The insect girl tilted her head in confusion.

Still, there was logic in instinct. If something truly couldn't be eaten, the bug girl—who lived entirely by instinct—would've spat it out.

"I've given you what you need. Don't forget—come find us after school tomorrow for training."

Old man Kaigan didn't pay much attention to the moth-like insect. After speaking to Maki, he left without another word.

"Oh, and feel free to pick any ninjutsu scroll you like," he added casually. "But I won't be going with you."

"Yes," Maki replied simply.

After that, she began browsing through the Aburame clan's collection of ninjutsu scrolls.

Most were fairly standard escape or utility techniques—nothing forbidden, nothing particularly rare.

As expected, there were no shadow clone techniques, and of course, no sealing techniques either.

That made sense. The Aburame clan didn't need shadow clones when they had their own insect clone technique—cheaper and more efficient for them.

Back when she'd faced the Third Hokage, Maki hadn't used insect clones. Instead, she relied on a simple transformation jutsu to trick him.

According to notes passed down from the original insect clone user, the three most powerful clan techniques were:

Insect Jade (Defense)

Insect Jade (Attack)

Insect Tornado Technique

Maki could already use all three without needing special training.

Unfortunately, the rest of the clan's "secret techniques" were underwhelming.

One of the few she didn't know was Secret Summoning: Insect Call, which allowed the user to attract large swarms of wild insects.

It wasn't exactly powerful, but it had niche applications—useful for controlling pest infestations or disrupting parasitic insects.

The second technique was Insect Disruption Jutsu, a method used to interfere with the sensory perception of enemy ninja.

It could be very useful on the battlefield, especially against sensory types—though it was completely ineffective against the Byakugan.

The third was a Secret Detoxification Technique, designed to draw toxins from the body using parasites.

The method was simple in theory: have the insects suck out the poison. But in practice, it required extremely precise control and a solid understanding of human anatomy.

It was essentially medical ninjutsu—and one of the more difficult types to master.

Maki lacked medical knowledge, but not precision in execution—so learning the techniques wasn't too difficult for her.

Interestingly, while most people used parasites to extract toxins, the reverse was also possible: injecting poison. Applying toxins to insects was simple enough—just dissolve a packet of poison powder in water. The problem was that it came with risks.

Insects could easily poison themselves if the dosage or handling was off.

"My bugs are poisoned! Lick it off!"—that kind of situation.

After several such accidents, clan records clearly advised against experimenting with poisons unless one had a clear grasp of what they were doing.

The fourth secret technique was a life-preserving method—another form of medical ninjutsu. As mentioned earlier, parasitic insects absorbed chakra and converted it into life energy for their own use. This technique took advantage of that process: using bugs to convert limited chakra into life force, extending the lives of seriously injured individuals.

The fifth was a secret healing technique, also classified as medical ninjutsu. Parasitic insects were creatures born of Yang Release, and thus could use basic Yang chakra to heal minor wounds.

Without this, the Aburame clan's bodies would be riddled with the pores their parasites dug—far more grotesque in appearance. Thankfully, these healing techniques kept their skin relatively normal.

Functionally, it worked like a hyper-effective herbal paste—faster than even high-grade wound salves.

Except for the Secret Summoning technique, Maki already understood most of these jutsu. Though she hadn't officially learned them, they were all extensions of her mastery over parasitic insects.

That was about all the clan's secret techniques had to offer—and the collection was quite limited.

The one that caught Maki's interest the most was a forbidden technique: the Corpse Pot Venom Technique.

This jutsu was designed to complement Kaigan's venomous insect style. It was terrifyingly lethal and indiscriminate—targeting enemies and allies alike.

The idea was to gather a mass of corpses from the battlefield and use them as breeding grounds for toxic nanopests. A barrier was erected to accelerate their reproduction. Once enough had spawned, they would be released en masse and carried by the wind, forming a deadly swarm cloud.

However, Maki wasn't particularly interested in the destructive potential.

What intrigued her was the barrier—a field that rapidly accelerated reproduction. Essentially, it functioned like an overpowered version of her own Arcane Hatching technique.

Even non-parasitic organisms would experience accelerated cell division inside this barrier. That made it incredibly useful for mass-producing insect troops in a short time—or for speeding up experimental growth in her body cultivation work.

To her, it was a rare and valuable asset.

As for ninjutsu, Maki selected the following:

1. C-Rank Earth Release: Earth Submersion – a basic escape and concealment jutsu.

2. Earth Release: Hardening Technique – to reinforce her body defensively.

3. B-Rank Wind Release: Vacuum Sphere – an offensive jutsu using compressed wind bullets.

One attack, one defense, one escape—her choices were efficient and well thought out.

Her chakra affinities were Wind and Earth, so techniques like Fire or Water Release were off-limits for now.

While the Aburame had co-evolved with parasites and theoretically held an affinity for Yang Release, there were no clan jutsu that utilized it. Any medical ninjutsu related to Yang chakra would have to be learned outside, likely in the village hospital.

As for taijutsu, the clan had none to speak of.

Still, this trip had been a fruitful one. Maki had learned a lot—and gained even more.
