Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: The Duel Beneath the Moon

The Academy never slept, not truly. Even after curfew, spells flickered behind closed doors, secret meetings echoed in the stone halls, and rivalries sharpened in silence.

That night, however, the air was different. Every gust of wind carried the scent of challenge. Every shadow whispered of a single name.

Valerian Nightshade.

The rumors spread like wildfire.

A duel.

Unannounced. Unapproved. Unforgiving.

At midnight.

Between Valerian and Caelum Emberlight—the Flame Prodigy of Year Two.

---

Valerian stood alone at the fountain plaza, the moonlight bathing his white hair in silver. Red eyes like smoldering rubies scanned the empty space.

He wasn't nervous. If anything, he was… eager.

\[System Notice: High-Risk Scenario Initiated. Duel Protocols Overridden. Personal Combat Zone Established. Observer Presence Detected.]

From the shadows emerged a dozen onlookers—students from elite houses, cloaked in neutral colors but unmistakably curious. Among them, Mila and Kira stood beside a tree, their expressions tight.

And then, the air shifted.

Caelum Emberlight walked into view, fire licking at his heels.

Tall, bronze-skinned, eyes glowing like molten gold, he smirked with supreme arrogance. His crimson robes fluttered with embers that never touched the ground.

"So the ghost finally comes to burn," he said.

Valerian didn't answer. He simply stepped forward.

---

The moment their eyes locked, the ground beneath them lit with magical runes.

Not academy-sanctioned.

Not safe.

Just raw, ancient magic, scraped from tomes older than the kingdom.

Valerian drew first—not his wand, but a single rune-stone from his sleeve.

He tossed it to the ground.

The earth cracked open, and a glacial mist hissed outward.

Caelum snarled. "Trying to freeze a flame? Rookie mistake."

He snapped his fingers.

A torrent of flame roared toward Valerian.

But instead of dodging, Valerian held out his hand.

\[Skill Activated: Abyssal Rewrite – Fire to Void]

The flames twisted midair, flickered black—and vanished into nothing.

Gasps erupted.

"What was that?" someone whispered.

"Did he… eat the spell?"

Caelum's eyes narrowed. "You're not using academy magic."

"No," Valerian replied. "I'm using real magic."

---

Caelum bellowed, summoning a phoenix of pure flame. It circled above, casting dancing lights over the courtyard.

Valerian reached into his cloak.

From within, he withdrew a ringed dagger—silent, rune-laced, ancient. He whispered a word.

The phoenix shrieked.

And shattered into sparks.

\[System Alert: Forbidden Relic Activated – Blade of Echoed Banishment]

Caelum charged.

A pillar of fire rose beneath him, shooting him into the air. He descended with blazing fists, aiming to pummel Valerian directly.

Valerian closed his eyes.

Then vanished.

Blink-step.

He reappeared behind Caelum, pressing a rune against the other boy's neck.

A shockwave of silence exploded.

Caelum fell to his knees.

Magic drained.

Powerless.

"You lost," Valerian said softly.

Caelum wheezed. "You cheated… That's not fair magic—"

"I didn't come to play fair," Valerian said. "I came to end your illusion of superiority."

He turned his back and walked away.

The audience was stunned.

Then—cheers.

Roars.

Even fear.

Valerian Nightshade wasn't just powerful.

He was changing the rules.

---

Later that night, Mila found him on the rooftop, staring at the stars.

"You didn't need to humiliate him," she said quietly.

"I didn't," he replied. "He did that to himself."

She sat beside him, silver hair glowing under moonlight. "You're rising fast. Too fast. The other houses are watching. Some already see you as a threat."

"Good."

"Valerian…" she hesitated, "just be careful. Not everyone here plays by the rules."

He turned to her. "Neither do I."

The next morning, the council convened. But not for punishment.

They wanted a report.

On Valerian Nightshade.

His origins.

His power.

His threat level.

One elder said: "We must decide now. Is he an asset—or an anomaly?"

Another replied: "No… He's a storm."

Valerian stood before the academy's crystal mirror that afternoon, watching flames flicker across its surface.

He didn't smile.

He didn't celebrate.

He only whispered:

"Let them come."

The aftermath of the duel echoed through the academy like thunder.

By morning, Valerian's name was etched in whispers across every corridor, every classroom, every house lounge. Not as a name to mock. Not as a curiosity.

But as a warning.

There was a new balance in the academy. One built not on lineage or prestige.

But fear.

---

Valerian sat alone in the Tower Library, the oldest section of the academy—a maze of spiraling staircases and towering bookshelves carved with forgotten languages. Only the truly curious ever came here.

He wasn't reading. Not exactly.

He was studying.

Patterns.

Movements.

The Codex of Houses—a tome that recorded notable bloodlines, alliances, rivalries. A living document, updated with every official duel, political maneuver, and student ranking.

His fingers hovered over a new page.

House Nightshade: Status – Obscure. Rising anomaly. Behavioral flag.

Potential threat.

He smirked.

"Well, at least they're honest."

Behind him, soft footsteps echoed.

"Thought I'd find you here," came a voice like velvet.

He turned.

Lady Selene Blackthorn. Long black hair. Pale blue eyes. House robes trimmed with midnight silver.

A known prodigy in enchantments. Calculating. Dangerous.

And now… intrigued.

"Lady Selene," Valerian said politely.

She leaned against the archway. "You know, I've seen many try to rise here. Most burn out within a week."

"And yet I remain."

"Yes," she said, voice low. "And with every day, you become harder to ignore."

Valerian closed the book slowly.

"Are you here to warn me?"

"No. I'm here to offer something."

He raised an eyebrow.

"A conversation," she said, "between anomalies."

---

They walked through the Enchanted Garden, where moonflowers glowed and the trees whispered secrets. Selene moved with the grace of someone born to command attention.

"I've watched you, Valerian. You're not like the others. You don't crave power the same way."

"No," he said. "I crave freedom."

"And you're willing to destroy anyone who gets in your way?"

"If necessary."

She studied him. "You'll need allies. The council is split. Some admire you. Others want you gone."

"And which are you?"

Selene smiled. "I'm not on the council."

"But you will be."

She tilted her head, intrigued. "You see that far ahead?"

"I have to. The game changed the moment I woke up in this world. I'm just playing it better than they expected."

Selene stopped walking. The wind stirred her robes.

"Then here's my offer: an alliance."

Valerian looked at her.

"I don't trust easy."

"I don't trust at all," she replied. "But that's what makes us alike."

By evening, the whispers had grown louder.

The faculty met behind closed doors.

Council members argued.

House Emberlight demanded Valerian's expulsion.

House Blackthorn voted against it.

House Seraphine abstained.

The verdict: inconclusive.

For now.

But something else stirred beneath the academy.

In the dungeons below the Alchemy Wing, where failed experiments were hidden, a shadow moved.

A cloaked figure placed a glowing shard onto a rusted altar.

"Valerian Nightshade," the voice hissed. "Your rise was... foreseen."

Crimson eyes gleamed from the darkness.

A new player had entered the board.

---

Back in his dorm, Valerian sat at his desk, flipping through the Codex again. But his thoughts drifted.

To Selene's offer.

To Mila's warning.

To the system's relentless notifications.

And to his own memories—still foggy, still broken.

"Why me?" he murmured. "Why this world?"

"Villain-class…" he whispered.

Outside, the academy bell tolled midnight.

Another day.

Another battle.

And somewhere, someone else whispered his name with hatred.
