Chapter 35 - Chapter 38: Trials of the Heart

Chapter 38: Trials of the Heart

The room trembled with an ominous force as the voice of the Arbiter reverberated throughout the Grand Library's cavernous halls. The moment the words "The first trial begins now" were spoken, the world around them seemed to warp. The air became thick and heavy, like a dense fog had descended, pressing in from all sides. Taro's breath caught in his throat, and Ryoku instinctively reached for the hilt of his sword, though he knew that mere weapons would be of no use here. The Arbiters were beings beyond mortal comprehension, and the trials they spoke of were no ordinary tests.

Taro turned to the woman, who had fallen silent, her eyes closed in deep thought. She seemed to be bracing herself for something, her expression unreadable. Taro could sense that she knew more than she had let on, but he didn't have time to ask her now. The trial had begun, and they had no choice but to face it.

"What is the first trial?" Ryoku's voice was tense, his hand still resting on his sword.

"You must prove your worth, not through strength, but through understanding," the Arbiter's voice echoed again, its tone devoid of emotion. "The Heart of Time is no mere weapon. It is a reflection of its wielder's heart. To wield such a power is a choice that transcends the boundaries of time itself. Your first trial, then, is simple: You must face your own heart and conquer the darkness within."

The words were like a weight pressing down on Taro's chest. He had been prepared for a test of strength or intellect, but not this. Facing the darkness within? What did that even mean? He glanced nervously at Ryoku, who seemed equally confused, and then at the woman. She had a faraway look in her eyes, as though she were seeing something beyond the physical world.

The air around them began to shift. The cavern walls seemed to dissolve into shadows, and the ground beneath their feet became soft, like quicksand. Taro's pulse quickened. There was no turning back now.

Suddenly, the shadows coalesced into a dark mist, swirling around them, obscuring their vision. Taro felt a cold chill run down his spine, and before he could react, a figure materialized before him—an exact replica of himself.

The doppelgänger stood motionless, its eyes dark and hollow, as if it were an empty vessel. Taro's heart raced. What was this? Was this part of the trial?

"This is your darkness," the Arbiter's voice echoed again, distant and omnipresent. "It is not an external force but something that resides within you. You must face it, accept it, and conquer it, or the trial will claim you."

Taro's heart thudded in his chest. His mind raced. He had always feared what lay beneath the surface—his fears, his doubts, the parts of himself he had tried so hard to suppress. But now, it seemed as though they had come to life, materialized before him in the form of this creature—this twisted reflection of himself.

The doppelgänger spoke, its voice eerily similar to Taro's own, but colder, darker. "You think you're ready to wield the Heart of Time, don't you? You think you can change the course of history, rewrite the rules of fate. But you're nothing but a coward, a boy who runs from the very things he fears. How could you possibly wield such power when you don't even have control over yourself?"

Taro took a step back, his breath catching. The words hit him harder than he expected. Deep down, he had always wondered if he was truly capable of wielding the Heart. The weight of the artifact, the responsibility it carried—it had always felt like more than he could bear.

But as the doppelgänger continued to speak, the doubts began to grow. It wasn't just the Heart of Time he feared. It was the truth that he had buried deep within himself—the truth that, despite everything, he was terrified of failing. He was terrified of being weak, of not being enough. The fear of losing those he cared about, of not being able to protect them, gnawed at him.

"Stop it!" Taro shouted, his voice trembling, his fists clenched. "You're not me. You're just a reflection of my doubts."

The doppelgänger's lips twisted into a cruel smile. "Am I? Or am I the part of you that you've always ignored, the part of you that you refuse to confront? You think you're ready to face the masters of time? You can't even face yourself!"

Taro staggered back, a cold sweat breaking out on his forehead. He could feel the darkness within him rising—his self-doubt, his fear, his guilt over the things he had failed to do. It was all surfacing now, in full force. And it was overwhelming.

But then, he remembered something. The woman's words, Ryoku's encouragement, and the reason they were all here—together. They weren't alone. They had each other. And they had the Heart of Time. The Heart wasn't just a tool—it was a reflection of their shared strength, their bond, their will to protect each other.

Taro took a deep breath, steadying himself. He would not let this darkness consume him. Not now. Not when so much was at stake.

"You're wrong," Taro said, his voice firmer now. "I don't run from my fears. I face them. And I'll face you, too."

With a cry, he thrust his hand forward, summoning the Heart of Time's power. The artifact in his grasp flared with light, its energy swirling around him. The doppelgänger screeched as the light enveloped it, its form disintegrating into nothingness, fading away like mist in the morning sun.

The shadows receded, and the world around them shifted back into focus. The cavern returned to its original form, the stone walls and shelves of ancient knowledge standing as they had before. The mist lifted, and the oppressive weight in the air dissipated.

Taro collapsed to his knees, breathing heavily. His mind was still reeling from the intensity of the trial. But despite the overwhelming fear, despite the darkness that had threatened to swallow him whole, he had overcome it. He had faced his inner demons and emerged victorious.

Ryoku and the woman stood nearby, both silent as they took in what had just transpired. Ryoku's eyes were wide, but there was a flicker of admiration in them as he approached Taro. "You did it," he said simply.

The woman's gaze lingered on Taro for a moment longer, and then she nodded, though her expression remained unreadable. "You have passed the first trial. But there will be more. And each trial will test you in ways you cannot yet comprehend. But for now, you have proven that you have the strength to face the darkness within."

Taro took a deep breath, standing shakily. He wasn't sure if he was truly ready for what lay ahead, but in this moment, he knew one thing for certain: he wouldn't back down. He couldn't afford to.

"I'm ready," he said quietly, though the words carried the weight of a promise, not just to himself but to everyone who was depending on him.

The Arbiter's voice rang out once more, echoing through the cavern. "Very well. The first trial has ended. You have shown courage. The next trial will test your resolve. Be prepared."

As the next trial loomed on the horizon, Taro took a moment to steady himself. He had faced his own darkness and conquered it, but he knew that this was just the beginning. The road ahead would be even more difficult, more uncertain. But with each trial, they would come closer to the truth.

And they would need that truth if they were to stand a chance against the masters of time.
