Chapter 8 - Chapter Eight

**Chapter Eight: The High Vantage and the Shadowed Rescue (Expanded)**

East Mountain loomed, a silent predator, its jagged peaks clawing at the pale morning sky. For Minwoo, it was a place of grim foreboding, a landscape already tainted by the echoes of a future he desperately sought to avert. His climb was fueled by a frantic urgency, each handhold a testament to the precious seconds he couldn't afford to lose. From his precarious vantage point, nestled amongst windswept pines, the scene below confirmed his worst fears. Near a crumbling stone structure, a figure lay injured and vulnerable – Yuna. And circling her, like shadows given terrifying form, were the Level 5 Berserk Stalker and Howler.

**New Enemy Detected:** Berserk Stalker (Level 5)

**New Enemy Detected:** Berserk Howler (Level 5)

Level 5. The cold, stark numbers echoed the impossible odds. For his pathetic Level 1 self, direct engagement was a death wish. The Stalker's movements were a blur of predatory grace, each shift in its stance radiating lethal intent. The Howler's occasional, distorted whines vibrated through the air, a chilling prelude to a sonic assault he couldn't afford to endure. Yuna was trapped, a fragile island in a sea of berserk fury.

His gaze flickered to his only active skill: **Shadow Cloak (Rank F)**. A whisper of concealment, barely enough to mask his presence from trained eyes, let alone mutated predators. Yet, it was all he had. His mind raced, a desperate calculus of risk and opportunity. He also noted a narrow crevice in the rocks behind Yuna's position, a sliver of a potential escape route, a fragile thread of hope in this desolate landscape.

Activating Shadow Cloak, the faint tendrils of shadow clung to him, offering a minuscule veil against the stark reality. He descended with a controlled recklessness, his movements fluid and silent, years of ingrained survival instincts overriding his body's current weakness. Reaching the valley floor, the air hung heavy with the scent of damp earth and something else… something feral and acrid. He observed the monsters. The Stalker was the immediate danger, its glowing eyes, like burning embers, fixed intently on Yuna. The Howler paced restlessly nearby, its head twitching, as if listening to unseen frequencies, its guttural whines a constant threat.

Minwoo gathered a handful of loose stones, his heart pounding against his ribs like a trapped bird. His plan was audacious, bordering on suicidal, but inaction guaranteed Yuna's demise. He hurled the stones towards a dense thicket of thorny bushes on the far side of Yuna, creating a sudden, sharp rustling that momentarily shattered the tense silence.

The Stalker's head snapped towards the sound, its focused gaze wavering for a crucial, precious instant. That was his window.

Using the brief diversion and the barely-there concealment of his Shadow Cloak, Minwoo sprinted towards Yuna, moving low and fast across the uneven ground. He reached her just as the Stalker's attention snapped back, its snarl a raw, guttural sound of interrupted hunt.

"Hey!" Minwoo yelled, his voice a sudden, jarring cry that echoed through the valley. He grabbed Yuna's arm, his grip surprisingly strong despite his weakened state, adrenaline surging through his veins. He yanked her away from the crumbling stone structure with a desperate strength. The suddenness of his arrival, the unexpected shout, and the jarring physical force startled both Yuna and the enraged predator.

The Stalker, its planned pounce aborted, swiveled its burning gaze towards Minwoo, its teeth bared in a vicious snarl. The Howler, its distorted senses overwhelmed by the sudden noise, turned its grotesque head, a low, resonant whine building into a potentially devastating sonic attack.

Minwoo didn't hesitate, didn't allow fear to paralyze him. He knew this fleeting moment of surprise was all they had. He pulled Yuna towards the nearby crevice, his mind screaming at his body to move faster. Yuna stumbled, a sharp cry escaping her lips as her injured leg protested the sudden movement. Pain flashed across her pale, dirt-streaked face.

"Come on!" Minwoo urged, half-dragging her towards the narrow opening in the rocks, the rough stone scraping against their skin. The Stalker, recovering with terrifying speed, began to stalk towards them, its movements a fluid, deadly dance of predator closing on its prey. The Howler's guttural whine escalated, the air around them beginning to vibrate with the building sonic force.

Just as they reached the crevice, the Stalker lunged, a blur of dark fur and gleaming claws. Minwoo shoved Yuna forward with all his remaining strength, propelling her through the narrow gap. He followed immediately, squeezing through the tight opening, the Stalker's razor-sharp claws tearing at the fabric of his worn jacket as it tried to seize him.

They tumbled onto the other side, landing in a disoriented heap on the rough, uneven ground. The enraged snarls and frustrated, echoing howls of the monsters reverberated from the other side of the rock face, their passage blocked by the narrow confines of the crevice.

Yuna lay there, dazed and in agony, clutching her injured leg, her breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps. She looked up at the stranger who had materialized from the shadows, who had shouted and pulled and shoved her away from the monstrous creatures. Her eyes, wide with shock, pain, and a dawning sense of utter bewilderment, searched his face, trying to decipher the impossible events of the last few moments. She saw a young man she didn't recognize, his eyes burning with an intense, unfamiliar determination.

"Who…" she whispered, her voice trembling, the question hanging heavy in the tense, monster-haunted air, "...who are you?"
