Cherreads

Chapter 14 - The Noble Task

Two days later, Amon and Juliane traveled to Riverton Village, a picturesque settlement located just south of Grythwill City. To reach their destination, they traversed a decade-old, yet sturdy, stone bridge that spanned the flowing waters of the Eudaemora River. As they crossed the bridge, a sense of tranquility embraced them, accompanied by the gentle sound of the river's murmurs below. It was Juliane's first time venturing to this destination, unlike Amon, who was well-accustomed to his travels due to his bustling trading businesses.

The air in Riverton Village carried a crisp freshness, invigorating their senses with every breath. The sunlight cascaded through the foliage, casting a warm golden glow that illuminated the streets. Blossoming cherry trees adorned the landscape, their delicate pink petals dancing in the gentle breeze, creating a breathtaking spectacle of nature's beauty. The houses stood proudly, their wooden frames weathered by the passage of time, yet radiating an unmistakable charm. The architecture boasted intricate details, with delicate wooden beams and sliding doors, and the roofs were adorned with curved tiles. Large, open wooden windows allowed the gentle breeze to enter the rooms, bringing with it the scents of blooming flowers and the earthy fragrance of the countryside.

In this scenic setting, Amon and Juliane were reminded of the purpose of their visit. The charity event had promised to support the Blind and Deaf Community in Riverton Village, and now they stood amidst the very community that would benefit from their contributions.

On the banks of the calming riverside, a gathering was arranged for the purpose of distributing gifts to the said community. Arranged neatly in rows, wooden benches awaited the attendees, forming a makeshift seating area. At the forefront, occupying the distinguished front row, sat the esteemed figures of authority: the Mayor of Grythwill City and the Village Chief of Riverton Village. Just behind them, occupying the second row, were the noble individuals who had generously participated in the auction, including Amon and Juliane.

In preparation for this momentous occasion, it was emphasized that a sense of humility should be conveyed through their attire. Amon, known for his refined taste, wore a spotlessly clean white polo neatly tucked into dark green slacks tha embodied a touch of sophistication. Completing his ensemble were sturdy brown leather boots, cushioned for utmost comfort and practicality. Beside him, Juliane embraced the essence of understated elegance. She gracefully adorned herself in a plain beige linen dress, its short sleeves allowing her freedom of movement. With every step she took, her brown loafers showcased her poise and grace.

As the briefing commenced, the noble attendees were enlightened about their role in the gift-giving process. Their task was an easy and straightforward one - to deliver baskets filled with essential provisions to the designated addresses. Each basket seemed to be carefully prepared with the needs of the recipients in mind, containing assorted goods. Inside were packs of freshly baked bread and a variety of vibrant vegetables full of nourishment. Nestled among these provisions lay a generous pouch brimming with shimmering copper coins.

Due to the village's quaint and narrow streets, the nobles were unable to rely on their automobiles for transportation. Instead, they embraced the charm of the village by embarking on a leisurely walk through its picturesque lanes. Each noble was paired with a village officer who not only served as a guide but also shouldered the responsibility of pushing a wheeled cart laden with the gift baskets.

As they carried on with their mission to distribute the baskets, Amon and Juliane's contrasting personalities became apparent. Amon, unyielding and composed, kept his emotions hidden, while Juliane showed genuine happiness and compassion. Her radiant smile and enthusiasm brightened each interaction, as grateful smiles and heartfelt appreciation brought comfort to the people.

Juliane couldn't help but marvel at the resilience and strength of the Blind and Deaf community. How could they manage to live their everyday lives with one or two of their important senses impaired? She couldn't imagine what it would be like to be either blind or deaf. Her encounters with individuals who faced such challenges yet showed unwavering determination left a profound impact on her. If being rich could mean helping them, she'd be more than willing to be married off to a rich gentleman.

With this in mind, Juliane asked Amon as they walked on the dirt road, "If I get married, will I also be able to participate in charity events?"

"It depends on your husband," Amon answered, "If that person likes to waste money on such things, I think he will allow you to."

"Mister, this isn't wasting money! We're helping other people! People who are marginalized! Besides… why do you speak as if you didn't bid such a high amount?"

"I have my reasons, Ms. Johara," he replied with furrowed brows, "But I do not see any reason to disclose it to you."

Mister Grumpy Cupid had awakened again, and Juliane knew no words could ever make her win against him! She only walked in silence, until finally, they arrived at the last address on their list.

To Amon and Juliane's surprise, it was a dilapidated house located on the outskirts of the village. The village officer knocked on the door, but there was no response. What was this sudden, unsettling feeling?

As Amon gently pushed the door open, it revealed a scene that sent shivers down their spines. The room was in disarray, furniture overturned, and a sense of emptiness lingered in the air.
