Chapter 8 - Mentor

As Drake heard the news he was shocked. He had no idea that he had a bloodline at all. His parents never had it and neither did his grandparents before they passed when he was five years old.

"I have a bloodline?" Drake asked with a dumbfounded look on his face.

"I never knew since both my parents and grandparents never mentioned or displayed anything remotely like this." Drake commented as he waved at his body.

"It is not surprising since bloodlines can skip generations before manifesting is someone." Cyrus explained. "Though as I mentioned a bit ago some of the spells I gave you are completely useless for you. On top of that since you just awakened your mana you have absolutely no experience on manipulating mana or even casting magic. Sadly you bloodline means that all your fire based spells will be extremely powerful from the beginning and that can and will be very dangerous for you and others.

"I recommend that you spend some time learning the basics from a magical tutor if you can afford it before trying to do anything related to magic if you can." Cyrus said after his explanation.

"I can't afford a tutor at all. Even if my parents were alive they were just simple farmers and would never be able to afford a tutor for even the something as basic as learning how to read and write. If not for my martial arts master a who taught me how to read and write I wouldn't have been able to fill out the form from earlier." Drake replied with an exasperated tone and frustrated facial expression.

As Cyrus looked at Drake he felt a pang of sympathy for him as he knew about his past. He stared at Drake for a few minutes with a look of contemplation before a flash of resolve flickered in his eyes as he made a decision.

"I can teach you the basics of magic if you want. Though it will not be for free. If you accept you will have to help me around the association doing menial labor. I'm old and can't get around and do things as easily as I could when I was younger. What do you think boy?" Cyrus looked at Drake and asked him.

Drake was startled to hear his offer. He thought about it for a few minutes in silence with his head bowed before lifting his head and looking Cyrus in the eyes and saying "I would greatly appreciate that sir. What should I call you for the time that you teach me? Also how long would it last?"

"Most mages who take on a student tend to teach them their life's work as well as their specialty in magic. Since I am only teaching you the basics there is no need for formality so you can call me what ever you like since I don't really care. As for the length of the time you would spend learning, it will all depend on you and how fast you learn things. It could be anywhere from a month or two to a few years." Cyrus told him in response to his questions.

Drake nodded his head in response to the questions. Due to learning martial arts he was very strict on himself when it came to manners and proper etiquette. Even more so when it came to learning from someone. So he thought for a few minutes as he decided on what to call the old man who offered to teach him the basics.

"I will call you mentor since you will only teach me the basics of magic. Is that alright with you sir?" Drake asked after he thinking for a few minutes.

"I am very impressed with your manners and etiquette boy. You passed my initial test." Cyrus smiled in response to his question and said.

"You see mages are very strict when it comes to manners and etiquette since we tend to be involved with politics whether we like it or not. No noble or official will let a known mage stay in their territory without meeting them to determine if they are a potential threat or not. That is why we always teach etiquette to those who we take on as students regardless of what or how much we teach.

How much do you know of noble etiquette boy?" Cyrus asked Drake at the end of his explanation of his first test.

"I know nothing of proper noble etiquette mentor."

"Hmm. In that case I will teach you the basics of noble etiquette that will generally work anywhere in the world as well." Cyrus said as he gently stroked his beard.

"I almost forgot about this little tidbit that you absolutely need to know. The flames of your bloodline will affect certain aspects of magic for you. There are less than a handful of people who awakened with the same kind of fire as you did so I don't know how it will affect or even change you magic. You will have to discover that on your own as that is not something that I can help with at all.

"Now let me change those basic spells for ones that will work for you. As for you meditation manual, it will work as it should, but it will never be as effective as it would be for a normal person. So you will have to change it to something that will work for you, and again this is something that you will have to discover for yourself. Some bloodline awakeners have noted that their bloodlines had a unique meditation manual that they awakened after some time, maybe that will be the case for you." Cyrus said as he grabbed the magic books he had previously given to Drake and walked among the shelves of the library.

Drake listened to all of this with a serious and focused look on his face. When he heard about a possible bloodline technique for meditation he quickly closed his eyes and focused inwards to see if he had one or not.
