Chapter 28 - Orders and Oaths

The air in Redhaven's courtyard was crisp with morning chill as Squad Four assembled. Dawn's orange light stretched across banners of the Hunters' guild fluttering in the courtyard. Liam checked his sword harness one more time, feeling the weight of the polished blade against his back. He glanced around at his squad—Tomlin, Lina, Fendril, Jassa, Hilda—each hunter bristling with anticipation and unease.

Sir Merek, a towering figure in silver and steel, stood before them. His armor bore the scratches and dents of countless battles. The morning was quiet as the squad fell into an attentive half-circle around him. "This isn't about glory. This is about survival," Merek said, his voice low but carrying. "The people of Willowshade are counting on us. Keep that in mind." He paused, scanning each face. "Trust in your training and trust in each other. Stay alive."

Liam felt a familiar surge of purpose tighten in his chest. He looked to his right. Tomlin shifted from foot to foot; despite the jokes Tomlin had cracked on the march to Redhaven, now Liam noticed the spearman's hands trembling slightly as they gripped his polished spear shaft. The corner of Tomlin's mouth was tight with worry, though he tried to smile.

"Come on, crack a smile," Lina called out, bumping Tomlin playfully on the shoulder. Her sharp eyes crinkled at the corners. "It's just a goblin raid, not a goblin ball."

Tomlin managed a laugh. "Just keeping things lively, Lina," he said, forcing a grin. "I promise to save you all from the goblins' cooking."

Lina nudged him with an arrow-nocked elbow. "Good, because I'll be needing my appetite tomorrow."

Even Fendril, broad-shouldered and silent, allowed a small grunt. Jassa let out a nervous giggle. Hilda's icy blue eyes softened a fraction as she nodded reassuringly at Tomlin. The jests lifted the tension, though Liam still felt his friend's nervous energy.

Merek raised a hand. "That's enough," he said. "Stay focused. We march at first light. Form up, clear your gear, and remember your orders." He straightened his back. "Do not treat this like a parade. Willowshade needs warriors, not tourists seeking glory. Are we ready?"

"In readiness!" the squad answered in unison, voices steady and unified even as hearts pounded.

Merek allowed a slight crack of a smile, then turned serious again. "March!"

The convoy of Hunters, Squad Four among them, fell into ranks. They passed through Redhaven's heavy wooden gate just as the sun cleared the horizon. Stone walls and spired towers faded behind them. Liam turned his head and saw the city shrink in the distance.

With Tomlin at his side and Sir Merek leading the column, the hunters marched out of Redhaven toward the dangers ahead.
