Kai's POV
The air was heavy that evening, thick with dust and the stench of sweat and fear. I could practically taste it. The pathetic lot in the courtyard stood around like sheep, bleating and braying every time someone raised their voice. God, I hated these fools.
"But why did you poison him, Rain?" Elias, the simpering priest, croaked like a broken flute, eyes sad, shoulders drooping like some kicked mutt.
I watched Rain lift her chin. Fire in those wild eyes of hers.
"Because he deserves it," she spat, never once blinking, staring straight into Batista's beady, frightened eyes. "This man killed my mother. He tried to kill me. If not for Azrath's grace, I wouldn't be standing here now."
The crowd gasped like a pack of fish out of water.
