Chapter 62 - Chapter 62: The Truth Comes Out

"So, in general, this young lady often came here to spend money and treat others to drinks. Then, one day, she saw them using codaine, so she got angry and stopped coming. At the same time, after the fall of Wall Maria, the Straussman family's main buying and selling business became difficult, but she still had plenty of money; and, similarly, others were also looking for her."

Rayan said as he bit into the bread in his hand. Annie next to him was eating a simple sandwich.

It was almost noon when they came out of the bar. The two of them casually bought some food from a roadside food stall and sat on a public bench on the street to eat.

"Did you think of anything?" Rayan asked.

"The reason for her disappearance should be related to her inexhaustible money."

"Mm, not bad. Let's go check Campa's residence later. If we're lucky, we might finish the task before dark."

The two of them didn't say much more, silently eating the food in their hands. Pedestrians walked by in a bustling crowd. It was early summer, and the dazzling sunlight poured down on the earth, everything golden.

Both of them felt a sense of peace in their hearts.

"Meow."

A cat ran up to the two of them. Annie looked at it and tore off a corner of her sandwich, offering it.

"Meow!"

The cat didn't eat it but instead let out an aggressive meow and ran away.

"..."

Annie was slightly stunned, then retracted her hand, her eyes a little complicated. Rayan, watching from the side, didn't say anything. The two of them silently finished their simple lunch and then headed to the address the bartender had given.

Similarly, it was also in the poor district. As soon as Rayan arrived, many people instinctively tried to run away, but Annie caught two of them. She easily got Campa's detailed address and then they went to his door.

The door was ajar. The two pushed it open and went inside, finding no one, only a mess everywhere. The garbage on the floor and the wine bottles on the table indicated that Campa's living conditions were very poor.

Rayan picked up a wine bottle with half the liquid remaining and shook it. "A rich girl's boyfriend lives like this?"

Annie silently searched for clues inside the house and quickly found several boxes hidden in the closet.

Opening them, all the boxes were full of codaine.

"So much, enough to exchange for a house in the city center," Rayan said, then suddenly frowned. "Inexhaustible money... Annie, do you remember what Elliot said her daughter's major in university was?"

"Chemistry." Annie finished speaking and then realized, "Did Carly manufacture this drug?"

"The timing fits. This drug first appeared in the underground district of the royal capital more than two years ago, which was shortly after Carly graduated from university. Plus, the current situation... it's unlikely to be a coincidence."

As Rayan spoke, he looked down and noticed a few red spots on the edge of the bed.

"Blood..."

Annie also noticed it. Looking at the sheet hanging down and covering under the bed, she bent down and reached out to pull it open.

Instantly! A face appeared! Bloodshot eyes glared fiercely at Annie!

"Ah!"

Annie was so frightened that her body slammed backward. Rayan was behind her at that moment, and she instantly pushed him back a few steps. His hands instinctively grabbed her waist, but the next moment, after steadying her, he immediately let go.

"Don't be afraid, that guy seems to be dead already," Rayan said to Annie, who was breathing heavily, helping her stand up straight. Then he walked to the bed himself and pulled out the person underneath. The body was still limp, so he shouldn't have been dead for long.

"..."

Annie had calmed down a bit at this moment, and remembering her panicked reaction from the shock, she felt a strange anger towards herself.

"This is Campa."

Rayan took out the wallet from the corpse's pocket and found his ID card inside. Carefully examining the dead man's face now, he could see that he had been handsome in life, but his deathly appearance was somewhat terrifying, which was why it had startled Annie, who had suddenly seen him up close.

"Just died recently, looks like someone beat us to it," Rayan said, then turned to look at Annie. "Are you alright?"

"...I'm fine."

Annie's heart, which had been pounding violently from the shock, had now calmed down. She looked at Rayan, who was crouching down to examine the body, and felt a mix of emotions in her heart.

At this moment, Rayan pushed the corpse back under the bed and covered it again with the sheet.

Annie looked at him in confusion. "Why?"

"Moving him out now might alert the real culprit," Rayan said. "He's dead anyway, leaving him here for a while is the same as taking him to the Military Police headquarters."

As he spoke, he picked up a broken cigarette from the floor, looked at it for a few seconds, and put it in his pocket.

"Let's go."

"..."

The two of them went out, went downstairs, and returned to the alley entrance. A young man was standing by the carriage they had come in, smiling at them.

Rayan glanced at him. Annie was about to get into the carriage and had just lifted the curtain when a knife was placed against her neck.

"Don't move."

They saw a man already sitting inside the carriage, wearing an exquisite suit, with one eye being a prosthetic just like the people the thugs in the bar had mentioned were looking for Carly.

At the same time, the young man beside the carriage also took out a gun from his pocket and pointed it at Rayan. However, before the muzzle could be aimed, Rayan kicked out!

"Crack!"

A kick landed on the young man's chest, and the crisp sound of ribs breaking echoed. Annie also took a step back, and the man inside the carriage chased after her. However, even with a knife in his hand, he was no match for Annie and was quickly knocked to the ground.

"Aaaah! Aaaah!"

The young man whose ribs had been broken by Rayan lay on the ground groaning in pain. Rayan picked up the dropped gun and pointed it at his forehead. "Where is she?"

"Don't kill me!" The young man, with the gun pointed at his head, was so terrified that he couldn't even scream properly, tears and snot streaming down his face in horror. "Don't kill..."

"I'll ask again, where is she?"

"In, in... I forgot, I don't remember the house number! I only remember how to get there!"

"Vangelda Street, number 197."

The man Annie had subdued suddenly said. Rayan looked over; the man did look very "elite."

"Who are you people?" Annie asked.

"Just errand runners," the man said, seemingly knowing that there was no way to turn the situation around. He was now being quite frank. "A few days ago, Straussman hired us to find his daughter. We quickly tracked down Campa. He said he could tell us Carly's address and secrets, but he needed help with something."

"What?"

"Extortion," the man said. "Use her secret to extort Straussman and get ransom money... We accepted. We locked Carly up, planning to ask for the ransom in two days. We were originally planning to quit after this."

As he spoke, a trace of sadness appeared on his face. "We were so close to seizing this opportunity. The same thing happened five years ago. If they had appeared just one day later, my son and I could have reunited in this city... It's always like this, every time I'm about to grasp something, trouble always appears and makes me fall hard..."

"Alright, buddy," Rayan interrupted him. "How miserable your life is, you can tell your cellmates later. We don't want to hear it. Yeah, your son died at the hands of Titans, that's terrible. But what does that have to do with you kidnapping and extorting people?"

The man fell silent upon hearing this.

Rayan then dislocated all the young man's limbs. The intense pain made him pass out directly.

"Kidnapping, illegal possession of a weapon, plus assaulting a Military Police officer, even without causing injuries... that's at least thirty years."

"You take these guys back first," Annie said at this moment. "I'll go get Carly out."

"No, it's too dangerous for you to go alone," Rayan said. "We'll just take these two bastards with us." As he spoke, he walked over to the man and similarly dislocated both of his arms.

Then he stuffed the two men into the back seat of the carriage. Rayan and Annie also got in. The coachman wasn't stupid; he had heard the conversation earlier and naturally knew to go to Vangelda Street without being asked.

"Seriously, I didn't expect to run into you," the man looked at Rayan. "I originally thought you were just some useless Military Police, I didn't expect you to be investigating this. If I had known, we wouldn't have come to silence them."

"So you know me too."

"Rayan Kafka, every criminal in the Stohess District should know you," the man sighed. "Being caught by you, I have nothing to say. But I don't want to die in prison."

"Is that so?" Rayan nodded. "That depends on what valuable information you can provide. If you have high-value information about other criminals, maybe I can help you apply for a reduced sentence."

"Everything I know, I'll tell you."

...

The subsequent process needs no further elaboration.

After Rayan and Annie arrived at the target location, they easily defeated a few guards and found Carly. The latter didn't look like she had been kidnapped at all, but rather like she was leisurely visiting as a guest, only restricted in her freedom to leave.

And she didn't hide the fact that she was the manufacturer of codaine at all.

"I made it," she said. "As for the reason, my father lost everything five years ago, and I just wanted to take it all back."

"But that's a drug that originated from the royal capital," Annie said.

"Yes," Carly nodded. "When I first started making it, my father and I agreed not to sell it in this city."

Rayan scoffed. "How noble."

Carly glanced at him and smiled indifferently. "I know that in your eyes, my actions might seem ridiculous, but these are my principles."

Annie: "But your father broke that agreement and also sold the drug in this Stohess District. That's why you were angry when you saw others using it in the bar."

"Mm. I originally wanted to leave here with Campa, but he wasn't willing to give up the comfortable life he got from selling codaine. And then those two appeared, but it seems Campa has also reaped what he sowed... What an idiot."

After she finished speaking, she took a drag from her cigarette and looked at Rayan. "So, are you going to arrest me now, Officer Rayan?"
