Chapter 13 - chipped marble

June didn't respond, just looked at her as she continued to work through the pieces, she was on to the better pieces now. The ones with the once shiny marble finish that were now a bit rough and chipped.

One was black with white lines running through it, the other was white with black lines. The second one was broken, held together by sap and whatever else she could find around the small village. It was mostly intact, though, as usual it was slipping a bit. It would hold for now.

She placed the two pieces on the table with the rest of the 'pieces'. Then she started looking through the maps.

June finally entered the small building. She tried to push the door closed behind her, but all it did was creak a couple inches before stopping. She had to push her whole body weight into it to get it to budge, stumbling a bit as it finally scraped shut.

"What are you doing?"

Rose asked, watching June as she finished with the door.

"You're acting weird again." June said, her tone wasn't teasing but gentle, poorly hidden concern.

Rose didn't notice, or didn't care to.

She walked over and took the seat next to Rose.

Rose raised an eyebrow,

"What are you talking about?"

There was a slight pause as she gently crafted her words,

"I get that you're dedicated, but still. You don't need to look over every trinket in here. It's not like anyone is going to steal them."

Rose rolled her eyes,

"I'm just being thorough. Didn't we just have this conversation?"

"Well… yeah, kind of, but still."

June paused for a moment trying to think of a way to continue her sentence.

Rose didn't let her.

"I already told you, well grab lunch together afterwards. Will you stop pestering me?"

June froze for a moment, clearly taken aback by her words.

"…yeah."
