Chapter 18 - Chapter 18: Counter Offensive Begin

Dawn crept slowly over the mountain pass, painting the sky blood-red. Beneath its light, a column of soldiers — Uther's defenders, hunters, and volunteers — marched in disciplined formation. The banners of the Mysterious Village fluttered proudly beside them: a silver wolf encircling a glowing crystal.

They had a target — the cult stronghold at Black Hollow Ridge.

Uther rode at the front, armor gleaming, sword resting across his back. The System pulsed at the edge of his vision, constantly feeding him updates:

> [System Combat Command Interface Activated.]

[Objective: Destroy Cult Outpost – Black Hollow Ridge.]

[Estimated Enemy Force: 80+ Cultists | 3 Elite Warlocks | 1 Mana-Beast.]

[Allied Morale: High.]

"Status report," Uther said without turning.

Mara, riding beside him, scanned a small crystal orb tied to her gauntlet — a gift from the system-linked forge. "Scouts say the outpost is preparing a ritual. If they complete it, they'll summon something... worse."

Uther nodded grimly. "Then we strike fast and strike hard."

The Assault

As they crested the ridge, the cult outpost came into view — spires of bone and obsidian jutting from the ground like teeth. Black-robed figures chanted in a foul tongue, surrounding a stone altar glowing with unstable mana.

Uther raised his sword. "Archers — volley! Hunters — flank! With me!"

> [Command Pulse Activated — All Stats Boosted for 10 Minutes.]

A storm of arrows rained down on the cultists. The defenders surged forward, steel meeting corrupted flesh. Explosions rocked the field as rune traps — placed earlier by Elena and the artificers — detonated amid the chaos.

Uther led the charge, cleaving through warlocks and constructs alike. Mara's arrows struck from the shadows, picking off summoners before they could complete their spells.

Then the ground shook.

From the center of the ritual site, the Mana-Beast erupted — a creature of stone, shadow, and corrupted mana. It roared, flinging soldiers aside like leaves.

> [WARNING: Boss-Class Threat Detected – "Corrupted Titan of Hollow Heart."]

Uther didn't hesitate. "Everyone, fall back. I'll handle this."

He stepped forward alone, sword igniting with pure blue light as the System's power surged through him.

> [Special Ability Unlocked: "Judgment Blade."]

He leapt, slashing into the titan with devastating force. The two clashed, shaking the valley — until finally, with one final cry, Uther drove the blade deep into its core.

The creature shattered in a burst of brilliant light.

Aftermath

The battlefield was silent, save for the moans of the wounded and the soft crackle of purifying flames.

They had won.

Black Hollow Ridge burned behind them, the cult's hold shattered.

But Uther knew this wasn't the end.

As Mara approached, bloodied but smiling, he spoke:

"This was just a forward camp. The true heart of the cult... is still out there."

As the battlefield cooled, Uther stood among the shattered remains of the Mana-Beast, his breath steady despite the energy he'd spent. The village forces began regrouping, tending to the wounded and dragging away unconscious cultists for interrogation.

> [Quest Completed: Destroy the Cult Outpost at Black Hollow Ridge.]

[Rewards: +5 System Level | Unlock New Structure: Watchtower | 1x Mana Core Fragment (Purified)]

Uther opened the system interface and quickly assigned resources to deploy watchtowers along the northern border. The battle had proven one thing: the cult was organized. Prepared. And watching.

He turned to Thalen, who had fought alongside the villagers despite his tainted past. The former cultist was injured but alive, holding a charred book he had recovered during the fight.

"This was at the ritual site," Thalen said, coughing. "A fragment of their doctrine. They call it... the Hollow Path."

Uther flipped through the scorched pages. The diagrams were grotesque — souls being fed to something beneath the earth, something ancient. A map was partially burned into one corner, revealing a possible location farther north, marked only as The Cradle.

"What's The Cradle?" Uther asked.

Thalen hesitated. "I don't know. But it's sacred to them. If they're retreating, they're heading there."

Mara, eavesdropping as usual, stepped forward. "Then we don't wait. We strike before they can regroup."

Uther looked to the exhausted faces of his people. They were victorious, yes — but wounded, depleted, and running low on supplies.

"No," Uther replied. "We return to the village. Fortify. Heal. Train. If we go to The Cradle, we go prepared. No more surprises."

Return to the Mysterious Village

When the defenders returned, they were greeted as heroes. Banners were raised. Bells rang. Children ran beside them, laughing.

The village had grown in their absence — the forges glowed hotter, new recruits trained with purpose, and the tavern bustled with life and tales of war. The System Interface updated again:

> [Mysterious Village – Current Status:]

Population: 74

New Roles Assigned: Apothecary, Strategist, Beast Tamer

Resources: Stable

Defense Rating: Improved

System Level: 8

Elena approached Uther that evening. "You've changed, you know," she said quietly. "You're not just surviving anymore. You're leading."

Uther stared at the flickering light of the central forge — the heart of his village, of their home.

"The cult thought we were an anomaly. A fluke. But we've become something more."

He tightened his fist.

"And now, we hunt them."
