Chapter 17 - Goliath

Kevin screams as he focuses all of his vines onto the giant monster's legs, successfully immobilising it for a few seconds. Alex unleashes fireballs that crack explosively onto the giant's face, melting off patches of skin that regenerate slowly.

Jacob rushes over to Jen, whose ribs are slowly knitting themselves back together, and supports her carefully. "You alright, Sis?" he asks, frowning at Henrick who dodges a sweep of the monster's wrecking ball hands.

The speedster coughs out, agony coming with every breath as she shakily stands up with Jacob's help. "I'm fine. Go help them." she mutters weakly as she leans on a building.

Leo approaches gently and sniffs Jen, the speedster pulling back at how large and wolf-like the canine is. "Good do-wolf. Good wolf." she whispers, slowly backing away from the large dog that suddenly appeared out of nowhere.

The good boy whines as Jen pulls away and dashes forward, tongue flying out of his mouth as he gives her a nice big lick across the face. "YUC-AAAAAHHHH!!" she starts in disgust, but quickly transitions into a scream as her bones regenerate at an even quicker rate.

Jacob unleashes blasts of wind that push Leo away, but the canine recovers quickly and barks at the wind user. Leo's frustration somehow comes across clearly and makes Jacob pause in his actions.

He looks towards his sister and widens his eyes at the rapidly healing bruise on her chest. "You...healed her?" he asks, unsure of what's actually happening. Leo simply nods and stares at Jacob, as if to say "I've got this."

With a nod in return, Jacob propels himself through the air and unleashes air blasts that destabilises the already staggering monster. The flames on its skin, however, are snuffed by the forceful gusts of wind.

"Jacob?! What are you doing?!" Alex shouts as the creature recovers and rips off the vines on its legs. It rushes towards Kevin, instinctively understanding his importance. The flame wielder unleashes a steady stream of flames, hoping to catch the monster's attention.

The giant, however, ignores its slowly blackening flesh and leaps towards Kevin. Its eyes bulge in animalistic rage, its mouth somehow opening wider as if to swallow the boy whole.

The little boy's body locks up in terror as he sees the monster swing a giant fist at him, his face frozen in a silent scream of terror. "KEVIN, RUN!!!!" Jen screams as she sees the scene play out in slow motion, heart clenched in helplessness as her body refuses to move.

She pushes herself off the ground with all of her strength, despite the pain of her regeneration, and crawls towards the little boy. Desperate tears well up in her eyes as the fist slowly descends.

Kevin closes his eyes, accepting his fate. "Grandma..." he whispers, waiting for the inevitable. Right before the fist can smash him into paste, Henrick tackles him out of the way and rolls into a run, Kevin on his shoulders as he sprints away.

The wrecking ball of a fist slams into the earth, the concrete shattering as if made by styrofoam. Dust and debris obscure the giant's eyesight, allowing Alex and the rest some time to breathe.

The soldier leaps over a car and places Kevin behind it. "Stay here. Good job." he quickly says as he wreathes his body in electricity and takes off towards the behemoth. Kevin's eyes are wide in shock, his body still trembling at the near death experience.

Jen gasps out in relief as she watches Kevin being saved. Her face scrunches up in effort as she stands after her ribs fully heal, leaning by a vehicle as she gulps in air greedily.

The old man, who spoke to Alex earlier, and a few of the normal survivors that didn't run, rush to help Jen. "Are you ok?" the old man asks, even as his body trembles in fear. Jen gives them her best attempt at a reassuring smile, the expression more tense than she had hoped.

"Head inside the Empire State. You'll be safe in there. Go!!" she shouts, leading them towards the entrance, bitterly acknowledging that she wouldn't be of much help in this situation.

The dust finally settles and the monster is unprepared when Father David slams a fist into its leg, forcing it to kneel as a concussive blast explodes outwards. With another forceful shove, an even more powerful blast shakes the creature's innards, making it vomit out blood.

"Our Father in Heaven, please forgive your children for their sins." mutters the priest as he winces at the visible sight of his concussive blasts wreaking havoc on the behemoth's internals.

"Henrick, throw me!" Selene shouts, running towards the soldier and jumping. Henrick catches her by her feet and hurls her towards the kneeling giant. Selene conjures a magic bolt in the vague shape of a spear, roaring as she stabs it deep into the monster's eye. "GRAAAAAAH!!!" it screams as it thrashes in pain, its hands smashing deep craters into the ground.

Jacob loses his balance, but stabilises himself with a blast of wind. Alex, however, is knocked over by the gust of wind as he was already fighting to regain his balance from the tremors.

Selene holds on for dear life as the giant monster's other eye stares malevolently at her. Dark purple veins gather around the damaged eye, rapidly mutating it and sprouting tentacles that attempt to stab outwards.

Suddenly, a large earthen spike then pierces through the giant's back and out from its stomach, its innards hanging off the tip as it vomits out even more blood. It freezes for a moment before it attempts to scream, but all that comes out is a wet gurgle from all the blood in its throat.

A flash of electricity slams into its chest, its bones audibly crunching as the soldier knocks the giant creature over with his shoulder. It pushes the beast even deeper into the earthen spike, brutally widening the hole further.

With a wet tear, the majority of its organs are freed from its body. It stills completely, eyes staring off into the distance as its muscles slacken. Henrick recovers from the slam and watches the titanic creature for a few seconds, his eyes narrowing in suspicion at its limp form.

Jacob steps closer and laughs, a deep and hearty sound as he steps on the giant creature's chest. "Hahaha! I think the bastard's dead! Damn, you're stro-" he's interrupted as Henrick blasts him with a bolt of electricity that sends him flying.

"Fu-u-uck!" he screams, not only in pain, but in shock as the monster rips itself free from the earthen spike. It chomps down on the ground where Jacob used to be, its lower body slumping onto the ground as the giant supports its upper half with those wrecking ball hands.

Henrick gives David a look and charges up a large bolt of electricity. The priest pushes out with both hands and focuses his concussive blasts on one of the monster's hands, knocking it over onto its face.

With a roar of exertion, the soldier hurls the supercharged electric bolt onto Selene's magic spear still hanging from its eye socket. The combination proves devastating as half of the giant's face is removed with a resounding BOOM, bone fragments and meaty chunks flying outwards.

It wobbles, anger still flashing in its eyes, when Henrick leaps up and enters its skull. Electricity bursts out of every remaining orifice as the monster is carbonised from the inside out, its one remaining eye melting as its brain is fried.

It topples over on its back and gulps down as much air as it can in its dying moments, its eye moving from side to side in a daze. "Damn. It's still alive? After all that?" Alex says, making sure to keep a large distance between him and the massive monster.

The soldier frees himself from its skull, chest heaving in exertion, as he gazes down upon his handiwork. A grim, unseen by the others, works its way out from his lips as he locks eyes with the behemoth. Seeing an almost primal fear in them, Henrick steps forward but stops as he registers amusement in its eye.

Henrick notices veins creeping up around its throat and lunges forward, hands piercing through its trachea, but it's too late. "GRAAAAAAAAH!!!" A shockwave of dark purple energy blasts out from the giant monster's mouth, before it finally succumbs to death's embrace.

Everyone is taken off their feet as the dark purple energy shakes the buildings around them, including the Empire State Building. "Damn it." Henrick whispers to himself as he watches the dark purple wave spread out into the distance.

His body is filled with newfound strength as a dark purple substance, more liquid than gas, escapes from the giant's body and into his own. The soldier feels no satisfaction, however, as he hears the faint screams of the damned closing in around them.

Selene and the rest get up from the floor, rubbing bruises that are no doubt going to get worse, and stare at the giant monsters corpse. "Is it...is it dead?" asks Jacob, his words still sputtering from the blast of electricity.

Alex looks at Henrick with admiration, and a calculating gleam appears in his eyes. He locks eyes with Jen in the distance, and both of them notice the other's expression when looking at Henrick. An unspoken conversation passes between them before they nod at each other.

Father David turns to the group, his face grave. "Go inside...now!!" Those words, and the increasingly deafening screams of what were once humans, snap everyone out of their thoughts. Henrick sighs as the group make their way inside.

" Always confirm the kill. Idiot."
