Chapter 35 - Marcus on the Roof

Marley didn't wait for his opponent to realize he was dead before he turned his attention to Greyson. Greyson physically recoiled at the fire in Marley's eyes. He started to back up the ramp right as dozens of soldiers began pouring out of the ship. Marley readied himself for the fight when, without warning, Moco and his troop leapt out of the shadows and began to engage the army with a mighty roar. Marley couldn't help but smile a predatory grin as he watched the king turn tail and retreat into the ship.

He began to make his way through battle, taking down stray soldiers as he went. "Work sites secure, all units move out!" He heard the announcement in his head and smiled. Alarms rang out from the place as the red alert was triggered. Marley paused as he saw dozens of aerial vehicles take to the sky. His heart skipped a beat. He hadn't anticipated this. He started to turn back when he saw Omnira and Marcus make their way to rooftops on either side of the street. Their bodies glowed blue as they picked off the craft one by one with energy blasts from their hands.

Marley watched in awe of his two closest friends for a moment before he heard Omnira's voice in his head. "Hey Champ! What are you looking at me for? Get after the King!" Marley chuckled at himself. Waved his arm at Omnira then turned and sprinted into the ship.

Marcus had his troop moving the moment he heard Raeni in his head. That display in the sky from Marley earlier had him fired up. They had just made it to the soldier quarters when the red alert went off. They surged forward as the saw doors start to open. Before the soldiers knew what was happening, Marcus and his troop was on them. Bodies flew everywhere, the sounds of battle filled the air. Marcus felt alive as he dropped body after body.

He grabbed three people, with the intent of clearing one of the larger barracks buildings, when he saw the aircraft fill the sky. He gave instructions to the men with him then rushed to the roof. As he made his way he met a few poor souls that tried to stop him in the staircase. Feeling like he didn't have time for a fight, Marcus showed them the short way to the ground floor. He burst out onto the roof and noticed Omnira across the street had the same idea. He nodded to her then cast his eyes on the sky. There were so many, but they were not firing yet. Marcus was determined not to let them.

Marcus cleared his mind and summoned his energy. He picked a craft and shot a blue arrowhead at it. He watched as the energy whizzed through the air and tore into the hull of the ship. It shuddered and exploded into a fireball that instantly vaporized the entire ship. Marcus recoiled slightly at the destruction, not expecting that kind of response. He shrugged and said to himself, "I guess that's where we gotta hit 'em."

He continued firing shot after shot, blowing up craft after craft. He glanced over at Omnira, she had obviously figured out the same thing he did. Together they exploded enemy craft, one after another like a pair of anti aircraft guns.

After taking down several, he smirked and said to Omnira through their link. "Hey! What's your count?" she looked at him like she was surprised at the question. "This isn't a game, we're not keeping score." she chided him. After a moment she added, "that makes twenty-five." Marcus laughed out loud. "Come on darling niece! Keep up, I'm at thirty already!" she gave him a playful smirk as they both began shooting faster.

Several minutes went by and Marcus was sweating profusely. His shoulders ached and he was breathing heavily. There were so many airships, and they were fast and nimble. The good thing was, because of their sheer numbers, if a shot missed one target, it usually hit another. He tried to prioritize the ones that looked like they were getting ready to fire, but there were just so many. He stole a glance at the ground. It looked like the fight there was going well. The shots from the air that actually made it to the ground seemed to take out more of their own soldiers than anything else.

All at once, Marcus noticed many of the airships begin to back off. He continued to pick them off despite the retreat, until he heard a loud rumbling noise coming from the ground. He looked to see two large tracked vehicles coming from either side of the mother ship. Marcus felt a brick form in his stomach. He had never seen anything like this before, but he knew it wasn't good. He nearly screamed over the connection, "What in Azaacar's name…" but he was cut off by Jakra's voice. "ON IT!"

Out of seemingly nowhere, a shadow wolf and a forest panther the size of buildings leapt up from the ground and crushed the two tanks under their weight. They picked up the useless husk of the machines in their massive jaws, almost in unison, and flung them high into the air. High enough to smash swaths of airships. Marcus cheered out loud and the move gave him an idea. He pressed his fist together and took a slow deep breath, gathering all the energy he could. He turned his body to his right as far as he could manage, then flung his arm in a wide arch back to his left as if he was throwing something massive. As he did he released all the energy he could. An impossibly large, bright blue crescent streaked through the night sky, heading directly for the enemy ships. Each ship exploded into nothing more than fireworks as the energy came anywhere near them. In a matter of seconds the entire remaining armada was completely obliterated as the passed through them and dissipated into the sky beyond.

Marcus was standing on the roof panting and ginning when he heard Omnira's voice in his head. "Maybe next time we lead with that, uncle."
