Chapter 11 - Chapter 11: Cute little monster

Subaru's POV:

I looked at the maids, they were exactly the same with the only difference being their different hair and eye color.

The one on the left had blue hair with a similar shade of eyes that reminded me of the deep seas while the one on the right had pink hair and ruby red eyes.

"Uhhh...good morning?...wait. I think I'm forgetting something."

That's when the memories flooded back in. This isn't my first time waking up.

Flashback:

I opened my eyes slowly, the sunlight from the window caressing my face like a gentle, soothing touch.

My eyes focused and the memories of the past day returned as a small smile tugged on my face.

"Emilia huh? Wish it was maria...wait? Where am I? she must have brought me here after I lost consciousness."

I decided to check my status and was pleasantly surprised.

'Seems like the beating I took yesterday was enough to raise my stats a little and also leveled me up two more times.'

My attention was soon caught by the new bar as I clicked on it to see its details.

[Searching world's data...unknown language detected... decoding successful! language has been registered into the archive]

[Gate: gate is a organ present in one's body that allows them to absorb Mana and stores it to later cast spells.]

[Ding! (Devine circle of the elements) reacts to gate]

[Your affinities have been altered]

'Well... this is unexpected. Did I really have a organ like that? my headache is not helping either. I need to get some fresh air.'

I thought, getting out of the bed and checking myself. I still had the combat gear on, its auto repair enchantment bringing it back to pristine condition after the beating it took yesterday but now a grey robe was covering it.

'they must have tried to take it off to check for injuries but it's more like skin than clothing until I cut the connection.'

I thought, reaching deep into my mind to turn off the enchantment that bound it to my body.

[Enchantment: (Living armament) turned off]

I opened the door walked out of the room I spent the night in and was met with a long corridor.

It looked like corridor from a castle. Lavish and well furnished which reminded me of the church's inner sections. I began to walk and soon realized something.

I had just passed by a painting only to see that same painting after walking a little further.

'It's repeating. A endless corridor? I remember that HQ had this trap too. Didn't really help when I blew the whole place sky high.'

I thought and grabbed a random door knob and opened it. On the othrr side was a room filled with very tall book shelves filled with many different kinds of books.

The enormous number of books almost caused a nerd like me to salivate.

I composed myself and looked at the blonde little girl sitting on a chair in the middle of the large with a table next to her and book in her hands.

'Oh my god.... SHE'S ADORABLE!!!'

"What a profoundly aggravating man you are, I suppose."

She said, stabbing a metaphorical spear through me. I dramatically fell to the floor on my hands and knees.

"Ow. Your words are painful."

She simply scoffs and continues to read her book. I got up and looked at her seriously, all the playfulness gone.

"What are you....you're not human. You're like him, like puck."

I said, reading the aura around her. It was strong, stronger than puck's.

She looked up at me, a small frown resting on her cute round face.

All seriousness on my face vanished, replaced with amusement as I cheerfully said.

"You're gonna ruin your cute face by frowning like that. C'mon, smile."

I said, using my fingers to stretch my lips upwards in a smile.

"The only smile worth giving you is a derisive sneer, I suppose."

She said her frown disappearing as she kept staring at me.

"So, is this room a library? Or a archive? Or is it some sort of death trap hidden under some strong illusion?"

"Hmph, its Betty's multipurpose room which serves as library and bedroom, i suppose."

She said which triggered a memory of the past and I spoke before thinking.

"So, you're a shut in? Damn, talk about a lone-"

I covered my mouth from completing the sentence but the damage was done as the little girl closed her book with a snap.

She then stood up from her chair and started making her way towards me.

"Betty has had just about enough. Time to teach you a lesson, I suppose."

I looked at her, amusement flickering in my eyes as I looked at the tiny blonde.

"Woah! What are you gonna do to me?"

I asked with mock apprehension, trying my best to not pat her and seem impolite no matter how adorable she was.

"Don't you dare move."

She said, reaching up and placing her hand on my belly. She was too small to reach any higher.

"Any final words?"

She asked and fron the tone of her voice, she wasn't kidding.

"Uhhh....What's your name?"

She looked a little surprised before a strange feeling enveloped my whole body.

Something from inside me was being pulled into her as I soon fell to the floor, utterly drained.

"What...did you...?"

[0/180]

"I simply collected mana from your body, I suppose. it's confirmed that you're not an enemy."

She said standing above me, a small smirk on her face. I simply chuckled and wobbly got up into a kneeling position.

My legs were a little wobbly as I stood up but nothing that I can't handle. She seemed quite shocked and hurriedly took a few steps back, confusion written all over her face.

"Nice trick. Unfortunately, I don't run on mana. So, what's your name? Should I call you Betty?"

"You.... what are you?"

She asked, ready to strike at a moments notice. I shook my head and folded my arms while turning my head to the side haughtily.

"Nope! I asked first, what's your name? I'll answer after you."

She looked annoyed but sighed in defeat. It was fun messing with her.

"Hmph! I am Beatrice, the guardian of the forbidden library, in fact."

A small smile tugged on my face. I kneeled in front of her to reach eye level and introduced myself.

"My name is subaru natsuki, a former priest. It's a pleasure to meet you."

She looked indifferent and seemed to be waiting for me to continue. Might be because I was fine even with her draining my Mana.

"I have been blessed with divine power which is my primary source of energy. I can directly manipulate life force."

I said, forming a golden rose with only my Devine power, it took some getting used to but now I could use both of my holys separately.

Well, corruption wasn't something I could use properly yet, but I was now able separate it from Devine energy.

Beatrice looked surprised and intrigued as she inspected the solidified divinity. She cautiously raised a finger and touched it.

This caused something unexpected to occur as the divinity was absorbed into her hand. Glowing golden veins as a surge of power emanated from her small body.

Before I could understand, my body was hit by a great force which sent me flying out of the room and causing me to bash my skull against the wall. Again.

Normally it would only cause a small concussion but due to my already weakened state, I was out like a light.

Beatrice's POV:

I felt a warm and soothing energy enter my body, strengthening it to a whole new level. Thesensation was pleasant and caring, until...

The pain, the anger, the suffocating regret came flooding like a broken dam.

In surprise, I used a wind spell, sending him flying outside the room then shut the door.

"W-what was that?..... who really ard you....Subaru natsuki..?"

I asked to myself rather than the boy but soon the emotions that had flooded me disappeared like they never existed.
