Chapter 10 - The smell of danger (Part 2)

Continuation of Chapter 5

This was like a car that speeds up fast and all the sudden crashes on a post... there is no way he could do that… and if there was, he would have to be directly involved with some school business.

-Guty; Damnit…

If there is a person that could have the answer to this question would surely be the principal, I will go see him in his office and ask him about this; I lightly take a detour to his office.

Meanwhile the principal was in his desk, thinking about his task…

-Principal: Damn it…, I must plan this carefully…, I cannot be left in the open… I must do this in the most discrete possible manner.

He subtly opens one of his drawers from which he pulls out a Heckler & Koch handgun, 11.43 cal., black painted, which he sates for a moment and then peaks at the magazine confirming it has nine rounds inside.

-Principal: This should be enough…

He loads the gun, places it back inside the drawer and conceals it with a delicate silk cloth.

-Principal: If I manage to get him into my office, everything else will be easier …

In that moment the door surprisingly opens.

-Guty: Mr. Principal I need to ask you something.

-Principal: Agent Guty!

Apparently, I surprised him as I walked inside the office, I think I scared him.

-Guty: Forgive me for coming in unannounced, I did not mean to scare you.

-Principal: Ah… it's alright, what can I help you with?

-Guty: I need information regarding psychologist Brandon.

-Director: Brandon? What is it that you need to know?

-Guty: Do you know something about him or if he maintains any relationship with the school?

-Principal: Hmm… Brandon was a very interesting person, he would keep a good working relationship with me, however when the first murder occurred, he got scared and almost ran off the school, the last thing I knew about him is that he was working in a retirement home, giving therapy to elders that suffer from Alzheimer.

-Guty: Alzheimer.

-Principal: Are you familiar with the affliction?

-Guty: Of course, it is a neurodegenerative disease that manifests itself as cognitive and behavioral deterioration. Typically it is characterized as a loss of immediate memory and other capabilities, as the brain cells die, various brain areas are damaged. The disease usually has an average duration of 10 years after diagnosis, although this can vary based on the severity of the disease at the time of detection.

-Principal The treatment if elders with Alzheimer is very well paid in prestigious retirement houses.

-Guty: I see, and he doesn't maintain any contact with the school?

-Principal: Unfortunately, no, when he resigned his position here, he did not wish to know anything about the murder or the school.

-Guty: I see…, send me every file you may have about him, please.

-Principal: You can count on it, agent.

Without a solid connection to the school, it is unlikely that the former psychologist Brandon would have anything to do with the killings in the past years, however, someone with that profile can't be ruled out so easily, I would need to investigate him for a couple days…

-Guty: Thank you for your cooperation principal.

-Principal: Do not mention it, come back whenever you want.

So many things have occurred this day, sometimes I think that 24 hours are not enough to finish my everyday tasks, today particularly has been a very informative and agitated day, I have a lot to think about and so little time to do so, without anything else to discuss I proceed to say goodbye to the principal to continue with the investigation.

-Guty: Farewell.

-Principal: Hold a moment agent!

When I was about to leave the principal calls for me, then opens one of his drawers as if he was looking for something, maybe he found a lead that will help me with the investigation, I think in this moment it would be a relief.

-Principal: in these few days that you have been working in our school, I've been witness of the hard work you do, also I see you have found things that could be dangerous, and which might put your life at risk, not anyone is willing to put their life in the edge for the sake of others.

-Guty: Well… I wouldn't call that putting my life at risk, but I suppose you could call it that.

-Principal: I admire you in that regard, agent.

-Guty: Wow… I should feel flattered sir.

-Principal: Maybe, I should give you this…

He pulls a metal object from his desk that I have trouble distinguishing.

-Guty: Hmm?

-Principal: The people like us, why worry for the wellbeing of others are not paid fairly.

-Guty: It's part of the job…, although I can't complain.

-Principal: I know, which is why I have decided to give you a gift, but you should choose whether it should be quick or slow.

-Guty: A gift you say… I've never been good at receiving gifts.

The principal is behaving very oddly today, perhaps he wants to persuade me with gifts so that I stop investigating about his corruption and unjustified wealthiness, but I am not a man you can bribe.

-Guty: It would be best for you to hold on to your gift's sir, I cannot be bought with them.

-Principal: It is a completely unbiased gift, just take it as a courtesy from my part, the only thing you must choose is whether is quick or slow.

-Guty: In that case I'd prefer it to be quick and be done with this.

-Principal: Fine by me…

In that moment the principal holds his expensive and luxurious metal pen which he uses to sign a free meal pass for the school's cafeteria.

-Principal: Here you go.

-Guty: I thank you for your kindness, but as things stand, I would rather bring my own lunch, I've had an unfortunate incident with food already.

-Principal: It's alright… I don't blame you; I hope you don't think badly of my uninterested act, I just want to make your stay here a bit more enjoyable.

-Guty: Do not worry, well I think it's best that I return to class before it's too late, See you around.

When the agent walks away from the principal's office a big sigh of relief escapes his mouth, afterwards he rests his elbows on the desk then he rubs his hands in his face relieving the stress he was carrying.

-Principal: Ah…

Once he finishes relaxing, he starts to clean up his desk, relocating paperwork and finally opening the drawer to put away his pen where he lifts the silk cloth and puts the pen right next to his gun, then slowly and carefully covers both with the cloth.

-Principal: Damn it… if only I had a silencer…

The school day continues its course without anything remarkable, apparently after the morning incident things have calmed down a bit, so I continue the last hours of class peacefully, making use of the time to think about all that had happened around me, I wonder what happened with the black vehicle that was outside the school…; that reminds me that I have to do a quick stop with the monitoring team before I go home to request a camera installation all around the school's perimeter.

-Guty: It's time now…

Briefly the school bell rings signaling the end of the day, so I put away my stuff and calmly leave the classroom.

-Akasha: Hey, Guty.

-Guty: Yes?

-Akasha: Tomorrow I will arrive a bit late, think you can hand over my physics homework to the teacher?

-Guty: For sure.

-Akasha: Thank you! I will reward you for it.

-Guty: No need.

After collecting her notes, we peacefully walk through the hallways enjoying a nice conversation until we arrive to the school bus.

-Akasha: Alright, time to go.

-Guty: I… have things to do, I will see you tomorrow.

-Akasha: You're not planning on staying in school too late, are you? I could be dangerous…

-Guty: No, I will go to a friend's house.

-Akasha: I see… then, I'll see you tomorrow?

-Guty: Yes, take care Akasha.

-Akasha: Bye, see you tomorrow.

With a sublime smile she bids me farewell as she climbs to the bus. While I head over to the building where we have the control room, the wind howls with a cold wind that combs all the zone, dropping the temperature, the hot breath from my mouth starts to turn into visible vapor, if things continue it's very likely that snow will fall…

-Guty: Damn… only just at noon the weather was nice…

I hurry to get to the monitoring building to escape as fast as possible from this infernal cold, I climb up the stairs haste until I reach the room where the specialists are located, I knock on the door to let them know of my presence, however the door does not open, I will have to use my password to access on the hidden keyboard behind a portrait of a flowerpot; I type my password and the electronic lock opens, I find it weird that no one answered the door, I told them I wanted vigilance 24 hours a day, If they went away I will put them in arrest for 5 days.

-Guty: Hey…

I open the door to find the monitoring room covered in blood and broken screens with both agents lying dead on the floor.

-Guty: What the hell!
