Cherreads

Chapter 20 - Sights

He was making an enhancing mix. His hands had no rings. Master Rhai fading in and out of his peripheral vision. Windows painted either red or grey.

Not because they were made of such materials. No, the stench betrayed this perception. His hands worked, another enhancing mix made. A half faded Master Rhai appeared urging him. 'But to what?', he mused within.

Then he realized he had no mouth. Just eyes. His desire to scream rose, screaming within him.

The wanderer frantically turned, twisted, stumbled. He was outside now.

A large city aflame. Dust clouds descending. The sky itself had cried out. Rain pelted the city. The wanderer's mouth was agape. He didn't knew what was sound.

He had forgotten its existence. All he saw, all he sensed was just fire and buildings shattered. Buildings that he once considered to be mountains.

All was in ruins.

His sight searched as he walked. Walked into the flames that burned the heavens to cry. A wind blew from the evening's horizon.

The wanderer didn't turn.

A wind blew over him from the morning's horizon.

The wanderer didn't twist to it.

A wind blew touching a leafy plant.

The wanderer smelled wet earth's smell. He felt a quietness spreading within. Stillness. Patience he never knew of.

But he didn't turn. He closed his eyes, awaiting something to happen. Another wind blew caressing his hair softly. It had that wet earth's scent in it.

The wanderer opened his eyes. A roof above, a desk in peripheral to right while a wall chrome in colour on his left.

The wanderer whispered, "thanks, leafy. Thanks for returning me."

He sat up, stretching his arms up. "Ah, that sets everything in place", he showed a nonchalance behavior.

A foolish attempt to forget his dream. But he had to. For today he had to, maybe for tomorrow too.

Knocking on his door, someone attempted opening it. "Who is it?"

"It's me, Rinet. The receptionist that helped you in." The voice responded.

"Coming."

He opened the door to the male receptionist that had helped him in last night. He was here with quite a cart with him. Each of the shelf had different things.

One was filled with huge amount of papers. That one was on top.

The second one had some dishes packed well in into their specifically made saucers, containers and trays.

The last however, had a few differing unrelated items.

Rinet explained, "this is your cart for today. The top is the clerical work we need you to get done before noon. That means you have 5 hours maximum, if you start now."

Rinet pointed to the second shelf, "this is for you to fill yourself up. You didn't respond last night when I did came back so I assumed that you had fallen asleep."

He pointed to the last now, "that's for cleaning your utensils and yourself. We did hear about you or someone like you selling some mixes in the market shop to shop. Doing that shop to shop once was good. But," Rinet's gaze gained an edge.

"Do not go on to do that from today onwards, once is all we could handle from keeping you away from Skyact Guards. The next time the Tribulations Squadron may show up, so please get properly legalised before attempting anything further."

The wanderer replied with honesty, "I will. May you tell me any more libraries I think I will need to go to more because this city is too vast and," he picked a few of the papers looking at them, his face did show concern worthy enough for others to pity his understanding.

"This is well you see this yourself", the wanderer had a few worry marks.

His genuine illiteracy in the clerical terminology bit into Rinet's thoughts. He considered for a few moments.

He mumbled to himself, "getting him to speed will be trimming into my other task, but we need the papers to be sorted category wise. Uhhh, the closest libraries have been told of him, but still Skyact may just pluck him on the way."

Rinet was split between his several worries. A sight that told volumes to the wanderer.

Even a simple task as teaching and learning had been hindered in manners for new people. This city had it's darkness rising.

Rinet walked out murmuring to himself leaving the wanderer to his thoughts.

The wanderer looked back at the leafy plant. It only flicked a few of the leaves as a wind walked along the edge of the outer wall, touching the plant.

He began his morning routine a simple one, he just had to make a good washing area.

The wanderer first closed his room's door. Placed back his rings on, then placed the few flat enhancing mixes empty containers from the bag in a big circle.

The desk was in the way so he moved it towards it's right end further.

Now his morning routine could begin. He used the action of earth so many times, he himself was exhausted. He knew the action of earth had over more than ten different results. Getting the same one always took risk.

A simple sight he remembered, a recent one. The leafy plant dying in the wagon. It wasn't just some random effect.

He knew of it. He reprimanded himself, "get yourself together, any action of earth works it just needs to form a bath area that can keep the water from leaking out."

He looked at the last shelf of the cart. There several of the things were about cleaning yourself, clothing, and a few clerical related items.

His sight felt dimming. He picked up an enhancing mix and drank it fast. He couldn't just get exhausted from the actions of the elements, not in Rigac. His future plans hinges on him using his time well.

Some words he remembered that he himself experienced came to him again, 'sights becoming dimmer whether of the physical eye based one or the mental imagination based one, is the first sign of the overuse of the actions of the elements. Just because your imagination sight has become dimmer or you never even had one is of no consequence, any changes to the original state of you means one thing. You are experiencing first stage of actions overuse.'

Sights.

The wanderer wondered, "would dreams also qualify as a sight?"

He didn't know. But it was worth exploring. He shook it off, he didn't had time to wonder. He needed to complete his tasks he had chosen.

Hours went by, moments spent working on the clerical tasks Rinet had helped arrange for him for the first day in Rigac as a cleric.

Rinet had dropped by in the meanwhile with another cart filled with books. He claimed they will help him get acquainted better with the papers. Half were just stories, the other were dictionaries, philosophical theses of ancient to current time's philosophers and thinkers, and there were a very few technical books on calculations, writing and natural sciences.

He hadn't asked Rinet where Rinet got it from. Yet the one thing he did understand was this. "Rigac's law and control couldn't identify where is what hidden in a story, looks like they have their sights on more out in the open kind of books. But why?"

Rigac's adventurers, pioneers and hunters papers were also looking more and more not like how people who call themselves as such will have those quests they reported back on. These reports were more common, more normal. Like they just were helping normal people survive.

Yet these normal people were not more in the city, but the outskirts. Relocation reports, farming reports, home rebuild reports, etc.

The wanderer was looking at the city of Rigac from a bird's eye's view. Sights of these reports, at least a few of them. He had seen them on his first day around Rigac.

The wanderer refurbished the reports and their categories. He read a few books several chapters understanding the hidden distress in the quest issuers words.

Rinet helped him along with the filing. The wanderer was now a confirmed traveler.

Rigac had more to offer. More sights to show. The wanderer wanted to take them all in.

His want to know of the hidden distress was apparent. Rinet saw it in the wanderer's blue eyes. Paler than the pale blue they were.

Rinet told him, "why not visit the Rigac Cathedral in front? The Lady always offers repentance for the crimes the victims have seen."

The wanderer was confused, "uh—"

"I know, it sounds weird. But The Lady of Repentance is fair, and remorseful for all the sins that may have happened, has happened, does happen, and will happen. So questioning the Lady's teachings is good, but it's answers are ones you have to learn for The Lady only shows."

Another Rigac Assembly worker cut in, "Rinet, just get back to the reception and leave the kid alone. He is too young to understand The Lady's teachings."

The wanderer had another sight, a different one. A more homey one.
