Flame Mountain Branch's exclusive training room.
Yamcha sat cross-legged on a mat, quietly meditating. In front of him was a teacup filled with water, with a fresh leaf placed exactly in the center.
Water Divination!
A conventional method used to determine one's Nen ability type.
Different types of Nen abilities manifest in different ways. Some Nen users can even develop effects similar to Stand users from the Rule-type category.
For example, the Fourth Prince of the Kakin Empire — Tserriednich Hui Guo Rou — possesses the ability to see ten seconds into his own future through the eyes of his Nen Beast.
Another example is Knov, a member of the Chimera Ant Extermination Squad, who possesses the space-type Nen ability "Hide and Seek".
Nen not only strengthens the body but also allows for the construction of unique, personalized powers. This is the advanced form of Nen known as "Hatsu."
Nen abilities are divided into six main types:
Enhancement, Transmutation, Conjuration, Emission, Manipulation, and Specialization.
Enhancement: As the name suggests, it strengthens the user or their weapons.
Transmutation: Alters the properties or shape of one's aura. This includes changing aura into electricity, glue, rubber, etc., while still retaining its energy nature.
Conjuration: Transforms aura into physical objects, such as clothes, chains, or even an entire space, depending on the user's ability.
Emission: Projects aura away from the user's body and alters its shape.
Manipulation: Injects aura into a target to control it (e.g., injecting aura into someone's body to manipulate them).
Specialization: A unique category that includes all abilities not fitting into the other five. It's more of a catch-all classification when a more specific type can't be applied.
Abilities of the Specialization type can be incredibly powerful or utterly useless—like one that only turns the user's head into that of a pig. It's the most unpredictable of all Nen types.
Yamcha believed his ideal Nen attributes would be Conjuration and Enhancement, to align with his long-term plans. The worst-case scenario for him would be Emission, since his style of using energy didn't need to be projected outward.
If he did turn out to be an Emission type, Yamcha would likely abandon developing his Hatsu and focus solely on mastering the "Four Major Principles" of Nen.
Based on his original appearance in Dragon Ball—especially his self-created technique, "Spirit Ball"—he might very well be a Manipulator.
But the only way to be sure… was to test it.
Yamcha placed his hands around the cup, channeling his aura through his hands to envelop the entire glass.
The outcome of the water's reaction would determine his Nen category:
If the water increases → Enhancement
If the taste changes → Transmutation
If crystals appear → Conjuration
If the color changes → Emission
If the leaf moves → Manipulation
Any other phenomenon → Specialization
Thus, Specialization is a broad category by default.
As Yamcha continued to pour his aura into the cup, a change began to occur.
The leaf on top of the water moved—and began to sink.
"So it's Manipulation?"
Yamcha nodded silently. While not his ideal result, Manipulation was still better than Emission, and it certainly had creative potential.
However, the phenomenon wasn't over yet.
"The leaf… disappeared."
Yamcha's pupils contracted slightly. After sinking to the bottom, the leaf was simply gone.
And then—
In just a moment, a leaf reappeared at the bottom of the cup. It slowly floated upward until it settled at the exact same spot as before.
"This isn't the same leaf."
Yamcha carefully picked it up.
The leaf he originally placed in the cup had been from a Euonymus (wintercreeper). But the one that surfaced was a maple leaf—and a bright red one at that, out of season and clearly from autumn.
"Looks like it's Specialization."
Not great, but not the worst either. Still better than Emission.
Specialization is the most difficult Nen category to develop.
It also involves another key element of Nen: Limitation and Vow.
Nen users can enhance the power of their aura by setting restrictions and vows during training. The stricter the rule, the stronger the result. By establishing rules and making heartfelt oaths, the power that bursts forth can be immense.
The basic formula is:
(p + n) × d = Z
Where p = power, n = Nen level, d = difficulty of the restriction, and Z = end result.
But these restrictions and vows are a double-edged sword. Violating them could cause anything from loss of Nen to outright death.
"The maple leaf replaced the Euonymus leaf… so is it some kind of exchange ability?"
Yamcha murmured as he held the maple leaf between two fingers.
A rough idea had begun to form in his mind.
"But no rush for now. There's something more important to take care of."
Before leaving the training room, Yamcha casually threw the cup, water, and leaf into a random world.
"Can't leave any traces. That would be too risky."
"Isaac."
As Yamcha stepped out of the room, he called out.
A young soldier quickly responded.
"Major Brown!"
This was a sergeant from the Flame Mountain base, currently tasked with handling Yamcha's affairs. In essence, his personal assistant.
Mediocre in combat, but obedient—just what Yamcha needed.
He handed the soldier a note. "This is a list. I want all of these items ready in three days."
"Yes, sir!"
The list was filled with precious gems and materials. At the very top, the word "GOLD" was prominently written. Based on the quantity alone, one could probably buy a small country—and crown oneself king.
Thankfully, Yamcha was rich.
The capsules he carried were packed with rare treasures from countless worlds. Just one of them could drive people insane with greed.
"Money can't solve everything—but it can save me a lot of time."
Yes, Yamcha was preparing to visit another world.
Stands, Nen, Hamon… none of these were enough to satisfy him.
Three days later, all the requested items had been packed into a single capsule, and Yamcha departed with it in hand.
Meanwhile, construction of the Great Desert Base was nearly complete. By the time Yamcha returned, he would have a new home.
"Let's go."
Fully prepared, Yamcha stepped forward.
In the next second—
Blue skies, towering buildings, bustling streets, endless traffic.
A strange yet familiar world.
